It seems like Blizzard doesn't really know what they want to do with Protoss in the balance test map.
currently the new tempest design is not doing to well. Already receiving a lot of push back and response that the new ability whatever it is will be either to strong or to weak, as well as responses from a little more prominent players that Protoss don't need more new abilities that have to be controlled.
Dt blink, carrier buffs although strong changes but so late game that turns Protoss into more of a race that has the survive to the late game to produce an unkillable army. Though actually experience these changes are more rare.
The only other two changes are slight speed increases for both the voidray and chargelots and are some welcomes ones.
But even though there are some good changes, overall they feel very underwhelming, This is without the myriad of nerfs that were given to the tempest, adept and warp prism. To aid with this and help Protoss against the new tools of Terran and Zerg, David Kim proposed that they might buff the stalker against non-armoured units.
I think buffing the core main army units of Protoss would be a mistake, due to the nature of the Adept and Stalker, both being relatively tanky and with abilities to increase their ability to survive. Usually when these units are to powerful it creates situations where the Protoss can just snowball while only creating one unit.
These type of games aren't particularly fun to watch or play.
Instead I feel like it would be better to buff supporting units, as well as increasing the accessibility of upgrades can instead support healthier compositions.
For example these are ideas I came up with. Feel free to share your own and your opinions.
1. Reducing the cost of Storm - Right now Storm is a late game upgrade templar rarely come out earlier due to h, which is to bad considering how it is one of the more healthy forms of aoe compared to the Colossus or Disruptor.
Overall with 1 or 2 storms in an engagement would be much more healthy and entertaining than a ball of stalkers and adepts that could potentially become something that can't be dealt with.
2. Reduce the research time of charge - Right now the twilight council is over saturated with long production times and high cost upgrades. A slightly faster produced charge could really help streamline the production of the twilight tech opening up newer compositions, or encouraging the use of different units under different circumstances.
3. Sentry - Right now with units like the ravager and lurker for zerg and terran being able to one shot Sentry's with the widowmines aoe and prioritized by liberators the usefulness of the sentry has decreased dramatically. So actually a lot of things can be done to buff this unit. My personal favourite is giving it the shield recharge ability from the campaign.
This would help buff smaller Protoss groups or defend in the early game as well as add in larger engagements. But you will still be forced to consider that it would drain energy so you have to be careful with it's use, turning off the auto cast (or the auto cast of some) if you want to make sure you have the energy for guardian shield or forcefield.
A change like that could add a lot of interesting dynamics while not being overpowered by competition with the use of the sentries other abilities.
A few other possible changes could be increasing the speed of the sentry so it can keep up with the other Protoss units ( Right now they fall behind the main army making them easily snipe-able. Before you could ff and escape but there are far more ways around them)
Increasing the units damage to light units, to aid against early lings, against the new strength of the hydra, marines, pheonix, oracles and mutalisks.
Increasing the range of the sentry by 1 to help it stay out of the frontline combat.
or even reducing the gas cost to 75. (Though I'm partially against this because I shudder at the thought of mass forcefield spammed from the higher amounts of sentries that could be present.) Even with my own concerns on this idea it might still be worth testing out.
Frankly Blizzard has always wanted to do changes that could be OP and then scale them back, Taking a risk and changing Protoss units like this should still be considered and pulled back a little if they prove too strong.
Right now they are only doing minor changes to Protoss in the early, early-mid game while keeping the more radical changes for Protoss in the lategame which is making it feel a little more underwhelming for Protoss players. A change to supporting units like the Sentry, Templar and decreasing research time to charge could really help diversify Protoss Mid game and healthy improve interactions between them and their opponents.
As long as Blizzard is willing to take the chance.
