Hello TL So the Afreeca Starcraft League semifinals just concluded and the finals is scheduled this weekend. It is fair to say that it was massively successful. This is of course a broodwars league but has massive implications on SC2. I have a few questions: 1. What does it mean for the SC2 leagues? How will the top-level progamers manage their time between two games? 2. Out of the top progamers who were good at bw, who are still left playing sc2 exclusively? 3. What will happen now to the competitive and commercial viability of sc2? Will it die out soon or are there any plans to reinvigorate the game?

1. No progamer will manage his time between two games because it would only mean sucking at both games.

3. BW is only really popular in korea. It still has die hard fans all over the world but the foreign community isn't that big.

1. nobody plays both games competitively at the same time 2. the ones who are better at sc2 than bw 3. who cares? just enjoy it while it's around. people have been proclaiming the death of sc2 for almost two thirds of its lifespan. personally i hope bw unofficially becomes the "korean rts" and sc2 the "foreign rts" so both can coexist without either dominating.

Let me clarify - 1. Here, I mean, what are the structure right now for SC2 leagues, like is it still robust that it will continue to be ok for the rest of 2017? I get that for the second part, the answer is no progamer plays both sc2 and bw? ok thanks 2. Here, Im asking very specifically. I dont know exactly who they are except for they really famous ones like Bisu, Flash, Sea, Jeadong, Stork, etc., but are there remaining famous ex-bw players who still compete in sc2? 3. Really? Judging by Tastosis' casting and the thread for the asl games, Im guessing bw still has massive appeal, although I dont know if its enough to launch something like a competitive BW scene 2.0.

yawn. SC2 has wayy more opportunities for up and coming players. ASL is awesome but drawing conclusions of "massive implications on SC2" is laughable considering Blizzard has already announced financial support for SC2 WCS in 2018.
Why can't we enjoy the moment and build on the new reassurance of BW in Korea without slinging mud at it's younger sibling?

Especially in the foreign scene sc2 is still more popular and has a ton more money in it compared to BW at least as far as tournament money and sponsorship is concerned.

I think the biggest takeaway from that Starleague is that SC2 isn't objectively better than SC. Some sequels are so great and better in every way that their predecessor becomes unplayable and everyone just moves on.
What is happening here is the opposite. I think it would be an understatement to say that Blizzard has made some mistakes (mistakes they could have avoided if they built on the predecessor, as they had in the past, instead of reinventing stuff that works) with both Starcraft II and Diablo III.

Diablo 3 had a few mistakes, but ultimately they got it to a good state.
SC2 still needs some developer love, so we can't determine the balance or design decisions just yet.
Blizzard has a track record of releasing games that are 90% perfect, but manage to take a long time getting the last 10% polished to perfection.
And even if they make SC2 a greater game, BW will always be a great game also.

1. ASL's semifinals have had more live viewership than ANY SC2 tournament, EVER. ASL top players' streams have more live viewers than the entire SC2 section combined on TL. I think you understand what this means.
2. The only one I know of is Fantasy, who claims that he enjoys SC2 more. Other players who were GOOD at BW but not GREAT are soo, Zest, Innovation. That's as far as I know.
3. SC2 will go on, I'm sure. There is money in it, a lot of active players, and Blizzard's life support. The two scenes are not really comparable at the moment.

didn't the WCS system play a large part in what killed NASL, MLG, DH, IGN and all those ongoing tourneys in the first place?

Basically BW is still huge in Korea, especially because JD, Flash etc are back while SC2 is very small in Korea but bigger in the rest of the world.

1) WCS is confirmed till the end of 2018 I think? and GSL is confirmed for this year so that at the minimum. After that who knows?
2) Most of the players who enjoyed BW moved back to it by now I think. The only player I know who was meant to be good in BW but still plays sc2 is Innovation (pretty sure he was one of the up and comers in the ned of BW along with people like Rain and Soulkey)
3) who knows what blizzard has in store

the WCS format implemented now is different to the one used in 2012. MLG dropped SC2 because of low viewer numbers or lack of sponsor interest I think, same for DH.
I thought IPL as an event stopped after IPL 5? I could be wrong

I think there is a big difference between the current BW and SC2 scenes. In BW all players are streamers, and the ASL is a tournament for streamers, there are no teams as far as I know - and reading the BW forum it seems that the big names (Flash, JD, ...) are still far from the level they reached at their peak with kespa. In SC2 there are still many foreign teams with players that are professionally engaged by them, there is a foreign scene (something missing from BW entirely I would say?): I don't see a big tournament in Europe/US prefer BW over SC2, but maybe I'm wrong.

I fail to see ANY correspondence between BW and SC2 scenes, ASL somehow affecting GSL whatsoever (???) and this thread makes no sense to me.

ASL and GSL are two starleagues run by one company, obviously the success of one tourney is indirectly going to affect the other by generating revenue the company can then put to use in different areas

great. people still use threads in which both sc2 and sc1 are mentioned as fuel for stating their preferences or bias. is it necessary to compare the two games at this point? you know what you like, move on with it.
sc2 has a future this year and the next because it is getting funded. it's really that simple. there's money up for grabs, so there will be competition to get it.
