Hello Starcraft 2 Fans,
My name is Bernard, I'm a 26 years old computer science student and longtime starcraft fan. I would like to hear your opinion about an alternative tournament format, which I think could benefit the whole Starcraft community. First I will present you the format and then I will explain why I think it would be beneficial. Please bear with me and try to keep an open mind.
The Format
The idea is that an encounter between two players (Player1 and Player2) will be played out in "sets" with the following rules.
A set is a best-of-3 with the first game being the home-game for Player1, the second one the home-game for Player2 and the third one being the decider-game. The procedure that is then done before any gaming starts, is the following:
1. Player1 chooses his/her map (based on a map-pool provided by the tournament rules) as well as his/her race for the home-game. 2.Player2 sees the choices made by Player1 in the first step and chooses his/her race. 3.Player2 then chooses his/her home-map and race for the second game. 4.Player1 sees these choices and chooses his/her race.
so far so good, but now here is the clue: When the players choose their races in steps 3 and 4 they have to choose one of the races they did not play in the first game.
For the decider-game which is played on a map predefined by the tournament rules, I see two possible modes. either: The players play with the last remaining race, not picked in the previous games (this mode would be the logical consequence). or : Free race choice.
Why Would We Want this?
I have 2 main points to make as to why I think this would be a reasonable format, I will only give you the short versions, as I'm confident you will want to make up your own mind anyway: 1. More variety of match-ups, which will increase attractiveness for spectators and hence be profitable for professional SC2 in general. 2. What is probably the more important point: It would totally diminish balancing concerns, which I think is a crucial condition for a game to be taken seriously as an (e)sport.
So long, I would be glad to hear your opinions about this
P.S.: To stop some confusion preemptively: Of course I'm not saying that all tournaments from no one should be played like this. I'm just saying: Why not give it a shot if some (pro-)gamers would be willing to try it, maybe field-test it in a small tournament and see how people like it.

I think it's cool! unlikely, maybe unwieldy, but cool

Everyone needs to spend sometime constructing a deck but dont have to actually play it, speeding up the whole process Everyone gets to see what are the top 8 decks other people uses and the next time round they can mimic it or counter them. recognition: Who doesnt want to but known as the guy who wins consistantly? or that guy who always fall in quarters :p with tournaments of different restrictions and structure. almost everyone has a shot in winning some of them irregardless if you're vets or newbie.

Have some ideas for couple of diff tourny format should be interesing barring complexity in coding its a pretty long post but i hope devs might take a look at this and hopefully give some feedback
constructed with restrictions:
Only 1 faction. Only maximum of X number of legendary or epics can be used. Uncommon and below No spells Card limit (20 cards or 30cards) no equipment
Basically there are alot of variations on how you can set your rules in the tournament but i would like to talk more on tournament structure.
we could have tournaments that charges differently and different prize support
For eg, an entry lvl simple tournament could be 16 players min to start only use rares and below with no equipment. 3000gold to enter. first prize : a gold pack +5 gems OR just 5gems 2nd prize : a gold pack +3 gems OR 3 gems 4-8 : silver pack 9-16 : 2 basic pack rest: nothing.
A high lvl tournament would be something like: 32players to start entry fee 15gem everything goes First : 1 plat pack or equivelent in gems 2nd : gold pack or equivelent in gems 4-8 : 2 silver pack + 5 gems or equivelent rest : 1 silver pack
the above structured rewards looks complicated to implement i agree. BUT what if they are run automatically? So how i would envision it would be (barring time taken to code it)
Everyone builds a deck specific to the condition and submits it. the tournament fires if enough people joins. The system will then automatically run the tournament in single elimination format Results will be posted in 1-2 hours time. All top 8 (or 16) replays will be posted. with the option of everyone's losing game replay option sent to their mail. prizes will be sent to them via mail
the pros of this format are Everyone needs to spend sometime constructing a deck but dont have to actually play it, speeding up the whole process Everyone gets to see what are the top 8 decks other people uses and the next time round they can mimic it or counter them. recognition: Who doesnt want to but known as the guy who wins consistantly? or that guy who always fall in quarters :p with tournaments of different restrictions and structure. almost everyone has a shot in winning some of them irregardless if you're vets or newbie.
cons: Coding. more coding alot more coding non interactive. you dont get to play out every game
Honestly i really think this is a very good format but once again barring the complexity of the coding process.
