Here are the final teams:
GSL:
Invited (due to WCS points):
Kim “Stats” Dae Yeob Eo “soO” Yoon Su Lee “INnoVation” Shin Hyung Jun “TY” Tae Yang
Alex “Neeb” Sunderhaft Joona “Serral” Sotala Artur “Nerchio” Bloch Juan Carlos “SpeCIaL” Tena Lopez aka MajOr Zhou “iAsonu” Hang (china representative)
The epic clash of one StarCraft II region versus many is just around the corner. From August 3 to 6, players will face off in team and individual competition for $100,000, and the pride of Korea or the World. The teams are now being formed, so check below for details on how you can get involved in voting your favorite player in!
The Teams
Each team will be made of 8 players through a mix of invited and online voting.
To kick off each team with a solid roster of players, we’ll be inviting the top 4 point earning players to each team. The finish off each roster, you will be able to vote in a representative of the mighty Zerg, Terran, and Protoss factions into the tournament. Candidates will be drawn from the top of the WCS Standings.
To fill the final eighth place in the lineup, Korea will have one “Wildcard” spot. After the top player is selected from each race, all the 2nd place votes will be compared, and the highest from whichever faction will get the final position!
For the World team, our Chinese fans won’t be able to participate in general vote, so we’ll be opening up the 8th spot to a dedicated China representative based on WCS points.
Voting is open now for all placements until 10:00am PDT on July 19!
Note: invites are based on WCS Circuit Standings prior to WCS Valencia
The Tournaments
GSL vs. the World will include a team competition and an individual competition. The individual competition will include all 16 players in a single elimination bracket. The team tournament will be a special exhibition to put these two regions face to face.
The Schedule
August 3 - Round of 16, Day 1 August 4 - Round of 16, Day 2 August 5 - Round of 8 and Semi-Finals August 6 - Team Competition and Grand Finals
Voting is now open, so make sure to check the links above and make your voice heard. There are more details to come on prizing, schedule and the team competition soon!
The fact that this is a fan vote is nauseating. Let players earn the right to compete through their own merit instead of it becoming a loaded popularity contest.

Poor GuMiho. Completely agree with you too, shouldn't be a vote. Just because LoL does it with All-stars doesn't mean SC2 needs it :/
Agreed, it's appalling. The GSL champion's only hope of getting into GSL vs The World at this rate is hoping for the wild card. Which is also based on the stupid polls.

I see, all korean ro8 then. Good thing there's also this team tournament so the foreigners don't fly over to play 1 bo5.
Guys pls use your power wisely and vote for the best players. Seeing sOs (and to a lesser extent Byun) win the poll is just sad. I already said it on reddit, maybe it will help a little bit
(b) GSL vs. the World. This event will offer no points.
That's little solace given the fact that a player like ByuN, who has done nothing all year, is going to get a crack at 100,000 prize pool over other equally or even more deserving players because, you know, popularity contest.

Like I said, I agree. If he qualified by his own merit that'd be fine. But there's no way he loses a popularity vote, and that's just unfair (especially given the person this impacts the most is, in fact, the reigning GSL champion).

The same thing is going to happen with Zerg. I think it's pretty safe to assume that a lot of fans with short memories will vote for Dark even though he hasn't done anything to warrant the spot.

Even though current Dark is not 2016 Dark, he is still a force to be reckoned with.
And in this context, there is no other Zerg candidate that's clearly superior to him. (Unlike ByuN)

Rogue
I considered mentioning Rogue (who I personally voted for), but he's been exhibiting this high level of play for a very short period of time which I feel puts him below Solar and ByuL, both of whom have both posted above average results on and off over the entire calendar year.

ByuL isn't doing that great atm though, didn't qualify for IEM or GSL and lost his first 2 SSL matches. I wouldn't give him particularly good odds to qualify if you had them play for the spots. But yeah Dark definitely isn't as uncontested on the Zerg throne as last year. Not by a long shot.
I wonder what format the teamleague will be, if they go all-kill, any one of the Korean team will be able to just casually solo the foreigners. But if they go Proleague, the Koreans are all Proleague veterans so....
disapointed by deciding the players for this tournament by votes :/
i was expecting a qualifier but i guess if this isnt giving WCS points its more like a showmatch .... but still *sigh*. oh the team part of the event will be awesome :D duckloadRa #neverforget

It has something to do with your portrait. If you are using a newer portrait like the WCS ones, change it in game to an older one, then try logging out and back in online.
I don't get why people are upset over fan voting and claiming that this guy has no right to compete. This is an exhibition event and people want to see the most popular players compete not necessarily the best. I see nothing wrong with that, especially when you consider that all the people who are voting will most likely tune in to watch their favorite player, hence increasing the viewership numbers. This sounds like the best way to promote your game when its an exhibition match, not everything has to be 100% decide the best player right now. This happens in almost all sports that have an allstars game, where fans get to vote for their favorite players, again not necessarily the best at that point in time.

It still sucks though. ByuN isn't on the same level as aLive, Maru, or Gumiho. Yet he gets a garanteed spot because of reddit.
If it was a simple showmatch I wouldn't mind as much, but $100K prize pool is no joke

ByuN hasn't done anything impressive this year. His best is a single GSL ro8
First had to set up my American Sc2 account which I'm never going to use again, and then the bloody thing just doesn't respond when I click vote, yet when I refresh the page it apparently did register after all ... and that for every single one of those polls.

I totally agree with this. As cute as the idea of fan vote is, SC2 is still a competitive esport. Let players compete for their placements.
I thought they were just gonna invite Top 8 in Korean and Top 8 WCS which is actually better than this silly voting thing.
The choice between watching Has do weird shit but ultimately get bodied by Koreans or watch Showtime do standard shit and stand at least a sliver of a chance is really tough
If this is World vs Korea why cant best players play? This vote obviously disrupts the scheme. Yes, you will get old popular players but the competition is not there anymore. Sorry Blizzard this is a total fuck up (especially one spot reserved for China). Don't lie to us how you have it set up, you know in advance who will win votes. Friends of the white rabbit get spots and wcs points, really? This is fair and reasonable?
I don't particularly mind it being fan-selected, but there's something terribly wrong with Gumiho not being there to begin with...
The prize pool is quite large, too. At the very least, they are filtering out lesser players by selecting candidates based on points, so Gumiho will most certainly be among those.
People are making too much of a big deal about Gumiho not being there. There will always be that one player who was #5 with a Top 4 cutoff. And this time Gumiho drew the short straw.
Yes, the event is called "GSL vs the World" and Gumiho won the most recent GSL, but I don't see people bitching about only US, Mexican, Poland, Finland, and China being invited instead of the ~190 other countries in the World. "Korea vs Foreigners" would be a better title for everyone obsessed with pedantic semantics, but does it really matter what the name is?
What's in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet.

I like ByuN and all. He is a nice guy. But just because he has a cute dog and being popular, he basically gets a free spot for 100K prize pool. That is ridiculous. It is not like we need to see more 3/5/7/9 rax reapers from him in TvZ because apparently these days he can only micro reapers and nothing else.
For Terran, I would like to see Maru, GuMiho or aLive.
excuse me? why not TIME?he is a GSL CODE S terran, and kr ladder 6400 points. his wcs points more than Semper and MaSa.why the voting not including him???????
seither and iaguz kr ladder only 5800 points, why they are in the vote????
I don't care if a popular player who sucks plays at an *exhibition* event. I don't understand the fuss about it.
If only the best should compete, we shouldn't be seeing any foreigners in Koreans vs Foreigners event, should we?
I just don't like how foreigner team will have 4 Zergs. If the Chinese player is Zerg they should have picked more protoss or terran player in the invitee spots.
I would rather not see all Koreans RO8 so I hope they break down foreigner and korean brackets apart so foreigners can reach higher rounds.
On July 13 2017 12:46 highsis wrote: I would rather not see all Koreans RO8 so I hope they break down foreigner and korean brackets apart so foreigners can reach higher rounds.
Why? Because Korean players are better so they always win vs foreigners? It is a competition. Let the better players win. It doesn't matter if they are Korean or not. Have some faith in foreigners as well.
I don't know why people are salty about sOs. his form doesn't mean anything, you all know damn well he could show up to any weekend event like this and win. would it really surprise anyone?

His true form will release on 22nd, so I don't know yet, but so far it's not very optimistic for sure. However, this vote is based on fans' choice, so I see no reason to not vote for him if you like his play style. BTW you shouldn't be bothered by the salty guys (and you should know whose fanboys they are), let sOs in is the best response you can ever have.
For those who complain about China having a spot reserved, be noted that the only alternatives are either making Chinese players candidates in voting or excluding them entirely, and neither would end up well considering the huge fan base in China.
On July 13 2017 14:51 The_Red_Viper wrote: I feel like people don't realize how bad sOs actually is this year, just have a look at the win% and you might get a better grasp of it.
You still don't get the point, assuming he is bad right now, he might not go to Bilizzcon because of this, but he might go to GSL vs world because of large number of fans since bad form and fans' preference are not strongly related, and this event does not offer WCS points anyway. You should only think about why your favorite players got less fans if they didn't get in, maybe they should change their play style to match majority of fan's preference to have a better try next time, or just go to Blizzcon to gain some cash (and that's where the big money is) if they are really better players like you said.
Why do you imply it's about my favorite players? I even said that i don't think Zest would deserve it in his fanclub. The point is that i absolutely believe that this shouldn't be a popularity contest, there still is a good amount of money on the line and it's one of the only chances to see foreigners vs koreans. It really should be the best players competing against each other here in my opinion. Apparently it's not the highest priority for blizzard and i cannot change that, i still point out why i think it's wrong. I am no gumiho fan at all for example, but he defintiely deserves it more than Byun. sOs has no business at all being there atm. The reality is that it's all about which fanbase votes the most/is the biggest. I think that's a bad approach.

I think you misunderstood something here, my point do not only apply for sOs (I didn't vote anyway), it really applies to any player. You want the vote to be a "power rank", but this kind of vote will always turn out to be a "fan contest", no matter you like it or not. GSL, SSL Premier and Blizzcon is where you should check for "power rank" type of event and not every single tournament has to be "power rank" based IMO.

But very much without the GSL champion, huh ?
Yeah? I don't care about Gumiho.
I have to agree with EJ here. At the moment, Gumiho is by far the more interesting player style, form and result wise. This whole discussion could be avoided if the players would qualify. If Byun would qualify, he will have earned it, same for Gumiho or any other player. This voting system just leaves a bitter taste.
Speaking of 'deserving spots', if people want it to be the best competing against each other than the only foreigner worthy of being in the tournament would be neeb.

People do not want the best players, not for this event. People want foreigners vs koreans and that's exactly what we get. The number of Koreans and foreigners has to be equal for this, otherwise it would just be another Kespa Cup.
Everybody has been begging Blizzard for more foreigners vs korea competion.
If we want to watch the best players we watch the GSL, SSL, Kespa Cups and IEM Shanghai.
This event is about something completely different.
Players should have to win at least one series to win money imo, the prize money only being distributed among the top 8 would be fine imo. The bottom 8 get another shot at winning something in the team competition.

Let me remind you that there are multiple foreigners in Code S this season and Neeb isn't one of them despite trying to get in. Not that easy to say Neeb is the only one then.
Not sure about how it works, but when you do: 1. Select favorite player 2. Press "Vote" (nothing happens) 3. Press it ten times more (still nothing happens) 4. Press "View results" (nothing happens) 5. Reload the page in your browser 6. "Thanks for voting" appears.
I hope, Rogue or Dark, Maru and Scarlett make it out.

Yeah well, it's tough to do a GSL vs The World competition if you don't invite people to represent 'The World'

So in the end if people want foreigners in the tournament they shouldn't complain about the list of players being a 'popularity contest'.
Can´t vote. The site seems very buggy. Can´t see the votes either. Also, curious as to why Major was selected intead of Kela, since he wouldn´t be if the decider was WCS Points or winner of Copa America..

Agreed, and I think the vote is fine. Only players who deserve it are in the vote anyway and this is an allstar event that does not offer WCS points. It's normal to be based on popularity. It's just 6 votes out of 16 players too, really not bad at all.

John Scott was one of the worst players in the NHL. A big slow dime-a-dozen "tough guy" defenseman, the kind of guy who signs one year contracts with usually low ranked teams just to fill in their rosters and maybe play low minutes in 1/4 of their games. The NHL did a fan vote to decide a player for the all star game, the captain no less, and it somehow started picking up mainstream attention that some people were troll voting John Scott, which made a lot more people vote, and then his team traded him to try and block his participation, which made EVERYONE vote for John Scott till the NHL finally cracked and let him play.

GSL vs all stars and the GSL champion is not there? I understand that there was a criteria for selection, but when those criteria exclude the fucking GSL Champion from the GSL team, then there is something wrong with the reasoning.

There are countless tournaments per year that require players to qualify. There's nothing wrong with having this one tournament where players get voted in. If that means more popular players get a shot over better players - then so be it. Being popular should count for something. After all competition is meant to entertain spectators and popular players draw more interest to the tournament which is good viewer-wise.

The only time a fanvote tournament is acceptable is when it's purely for show, not for serious money (it's a $100K prize pool ffs, probably $35K for first place). This is the biggest non-GSL tournament in korea we've had for years.... All players should have an equal chance. Even doing it purely of WCS points would be alright, because at least they've earnt it via performance.
You cannot deny that aLive and gumiho have outdone themselves by a mile this year, meanwhile ByuN's done nothing impressive and he's the one that gets a shot. Because reddit is obsessed with him.
And btw being popular already counts for something, it gets you better streaming income and more potential sponsorship/team support.
With 100K on the line, this ridiculous voting place is just stupid. It kind of cheapens the SC2 tournament into some sort of popularity contest when it is all about skills and competition. I'm not sure who comes up with this childish idea.
Okay, if you're gonna have the thing be a popularity contest, which is by no means optimal, at least make sure the polls and the site they're on work properly. That's the least Blizzard should do.
The idea of these invites is very silly. Now top 4 of WCS may change after Valencia, why didn't they wait 3 more days with invites? We may have a new wcs champ who is not invited. We will get Korea vs World without best Koreans and best WCS players because someone decided to invite Chinese players and make a popularity test. This is so stupid that its funny. Just kill the game and waste money make all fans upset, buff reapers.

Probably because it's good to have everything organized and scheduled in advance? Flights and hotels booked, etc. They didn't count season 3 for the Korean invites either, at least it's consistent in that regard.

They still have enough time if they made a vote last 7 days and then organize flights. Even though its difficult or impossible to vote from EU right now so the vote is already "rigged".
With 100K prize pool, they can make a16-players Global weekend event that actually has some decent sever qualifiers instead of this half-ass ranking + random invites + some silly fan voting.

I don't think it's intentionally rigged. And you can vote from EU it's just difficult.
I'm curious to if he korean fans have been made aware of this? Afreeca must have put something on telling people where to vote etc

Your words are too bit too harsh but frankly I agree with you. ByuN is meh this year. He can micro reapers and that is all. I wouldn't want to see him at GSL vs The World. I would prefer seeing GuMiho or Maru instead.

Yes he has good winrates, because he plays in more online cups than anyone else. It's not hard to have good win %'s when you're playing against lower level competition. Remember when Maru went 16-0 against foreigners at WeSG? You think he has a chance at doing that in Korea?

What relevence does that have. He won GSL and blizzcon.......last year. You think Zest is still good now cause he won GSL last year? ByuN is proof that winrates aren't an accurate measurement of level. He hasn't the chance to win GSL this season, he'd need a lucky group to even get to playoffs.
He couldn't get into SSL premier either season, he lost in a GSL ro32. A single GSL ro8 is his best acheivement all year. And he (likely) won't qualify for Blizzcon either. "top 3 terran" smh. Inno, TY, and gumiho have won tournaments. aLive has reached finals, Maru has gotten top 4/top8 minimum in every korean event. All 5 of them have significantly better results than ByuN.
Don't get me wrong he is a very strong player, potentially top 10 korea right now. And he could probably beat any foreigner. But the circlejerking around him is unreal. He hasn't done anything remarkable or consistant all year. People say he's best terran because of 2016. Maybe if tankivacs were still around he'd have a chance

Well i am not saying that Byun had a really good year in tournaments, but his winrate is still really good and that alone should mean he is quite the strong player even if he loses important playoff matches.

Yes he has good winrates, because he plays in more online cups than anyone else. It's not hard to have good win %'s when you're playing against lower level competition. Remember when Maru went 16-0 against foreigners at WeSG? You think he has a chance at doing that in Korea?
ByuN hasn't been close to looking like he can win a tournament this year. He's not even top 5 terran (Inno, TY, Gumiho, aLive, and Maru are all above him). But reddit loves anything he does, so gets into GSLvsTW easy........
Well I guess it just proves that winrates aren't everything. To put ByuN and ByuL that far above champions like TY, gumiho, and Stats....
Well i am not saying that Byun had a really good year in tournaments, but his winrate is still really good and that alone should mean he is quite the strong player even if he loses important playoff matches.
I'm not saying he isn't a strong player, he's in really good form. But he isn't a top terran this year like everyone says. He's not on the same level as TY, Inno, Gumi etc
I am saying that at leats with Byun you cannot really question his gameplay as seen by the win%. His results were mediocre considering these winrates. With sOs it's consistent though, low win% and no results. I only really addressed your comment because you implied Byun's stats are only good because of online competition, that's not the case though
In addition to the argument that online cups have softer fields and it is thus easier to amass higher win rate compared to offline/Korean events, I think there is one more dimension to it.
It is possible to have a relatively low winrate vs. mediocre players and higher vs. top players. In poker, Helmuth is very good against bad players, but relatively worse vs. the top players.
Someone like Ike Haxton or Phil Galfond will be better against pros, but compared to Helmuth, worse against amateurs.
I'd thus say that someone with strong mechanics, like Inno, will have a ridiculously high winrate against mediocre players, but that doesn't necessarily directly translate to playing vs. top competition. I wouldn't be surprised if TY/Maru had lower winrate against mediocre players than Inno, but higher against top10 players.

Its a $100K tournament. If it was just a showmatch with a small or non existent prize pool it wouldn't be so bad. The fact that its one of the biggest tournaments of the year (money wise) means it should have proper seeding/qualification.

Only the majority of 2017
As u said the majority , dont think so atm that they are in any higher level than Byun . Also Byun seems to have stopped his slump and getting back to his old self .

He's just making more reapers to cover up for his still existing weaknesses.

Inno has a ridiculously high winrate, period. And so do TY/Maru, just look at what they did at WESG.
Yes, there are some subtle distinctions but all of them stomp noobs and have epic clashes with top-tiers.
Inno and TY have the big results this year, though I would give Inno a slight edge in form because he has won more recent tournaments.
Your words are too bit too harsh but frankly I agree with you. ByuN is meh this year. He can micro reapers and that is all. I wouldn't want to see him at GSL vs The World. I would prefer seeing GuMiho or Maru instead.
Well I perhaps had a very poor choice of words in this case. I mean Byun is a descent player, however he became a monster by abusing reapers.
You need to calm down. Blizzard screwed up some of their backend logic, that's all. People are trying to help by providing usable workarounds. Raging serves no point.
If you make a vote and make it difficult for persons from a region to vote there is no workaround that will be effective. Imagine if lets say in Germany voters for incumbent party could vote normally but the persons for opposition had to register accounts - could this vote be valid?

What basis do you have for saying ByuN's out of his slump? If he gets a solid ro8-ro4 again I'll give it to you. Right now all I'm seeing is reapers every game
also TY is probably the most consistant player of LoTV so far, or maybe Stats. He's a contender to win every tournament he's in, can't say the same for ByuN
To be honest I should less concerned with ByuN winning over Gumhio and Maru, and more worried about the fact the protoss vote goes to either sOs or Zest.....

Elazer has probably best ZvP in the World right now, anyway players selected from both sides matter.
This can't be serious. Elazer has barely played any big ZvPs this year. Only noteworthy 2017 wins are against Neeb, Showtime, and ptitdrogo. And even then he's lost to them on other occasions
I don't think the foreigner vote makes much difference tbh. It's fairly obvious who the contenders are. Snute/scarlett/Elazer, Kela/Uthermy, and Has/Showtime. Whereas Korean potentials are byun/gumiho/maru, dark/solar/rogue and herO/sOs/Zest. I don't think any of them koreans are losing to those foreigners except the protosses. Or maybe if a ZvZ happens

Okay I trust you. The man who we never plays ZvP has the best ZvP the world. It doesn't matter if Elazer's best ZvP acheivment all year is taking a map of herO in GSL qualifiers. He's the best goddamit, Neeb says so

i voted for sos and has because i want to see stupid builds. exact same reason i voted for gumiho, whether any of them are the best makes no difference to me lol
Scarlett is just super popular and the EU votes were split between Elazer and Snute, always thought she would win.
Showtime is still seen as the best foreign Protoss after Neeb, even with his slump.
Kelazhur and uThermal was closer than I thought, looking at the results and progress of Kelazhur, he deserves to win I think.
ByuN and Dark were always going to win, only the Korean Protoss was hard to predict.
Edit: You have to wonder though, uThermal and Kealzhur was so close, that the problems with voting and the need to have a character on NA might've tilted it in Kelazhur's favour.
ByuN choice is kind of expected given how popular he is but honestly I was hoping for GuMiho. herO is great choice for Protoss (Gogo herO!) and Dark is fine choice for Zerg. I wonder what is the wildcard though, maybe GuMiho.
For foreigners, I like Showtime and he is a great Protoss but his current form is just poor. Hopefully, he can overcome that and show his good form. I don't really like the Scarlett choice. She is good and all but Snute and Elazer would be better choice. Kelazhur is expected. He is the best foreign Terran along Major.
We have results of a buggy vote where a lot voters from EU and perhaps other regions could not vote normally. Kelazhur might be better than uThermal but most certainly he is not more popular. Scarlett may be more popular than Snute but I strongly doubt that it would be by this margin. The vote was a bad idea and now the results are also very questionable due to the way it was done..

Huh, you really think so? Watching today's GSL matches, I thought the only reason Dark didn't go to the winner's match is that he was overconfident [yet easily crushed Trap with ever slightly more careful play].
That said Rouge destroying 3 rax reaper with 3 different strats (I forget what tourney I remeber this from) was a brilliant display.
I'd say Rouge can sometimes be made to look silly whereas Dark is, even when stupidly behind after a failed strat, always partially in the game.
I don't think we can really be disappointed with the tournament line -up (hope Gumiho gets the wild card) but I wish Elazer was picked instead of Scarlett.

It was IEM qualifier match Rogue vs ByuN when he defended 3 rax reapers 3 different ways. Rogue is on the rise lately but for some reason he is inconsistent. One week, he destroyed everyone at GSL and the next got rekt by aLive and lost to Hush. It tends to be the trend of JAGW players. Up and down.

Would love to be Elazer or Snute. They were on fire at Valencia. I prefer to see those two instead of Scarlett and iAsonu.
I voted for Showtime but it was before Valencia. Afterwards I wished I could have switched my vote for Drogo. I hope Showtime delivers and prove I was right about him (as now I doubt it), he has an opportunity to deliver in the HSC first.
With iAsonu there for the world I think Elazer would have been the proper choice for the world, as he did better then Scarlett in both the GSL and Valencia, even though in GSL he played his worst match up. And even though he is young he is in a better form then Snute now.
herO and Dark is fine (quite stunned with Zest and sOs getting so many votes, especially after their performance this year, starting with NW4, both losing to Nerchio), but Gumiho should have been the Terran for Korea. Byun is far not in form for the past months. Won't be surprised if Byun loses to one of the foreigners early on there.
Scarlett is the best choice, other foreigners are OK. I would prefer Rogue, but Dark is OK. But ByuN!!! My boy Maru :-( Plus herO should play for his spot a tie break qualifier against sOs :-)

If Scarlett doesn't throw she's the better choice
Why? Elazer has proven to be the better player in every way this year. Did better in GSL and WCS both. He also did better last year.
I'm way more of a Scarlett fan than Elazer fan, but just looking at who is stronger, Elazer should've gotten more votes I think.

I'd argue that almost going 2-0 against innovation is more impressive than looking strong against gumiho. I understand wanting Elazer though - he's waaaaay stronger in zvz (which is why he did better in wcs) and he's on a back of a championship so his mentality will be quite good.

I personally think GuMiho or Classic is deserved more than sOs to be there.
It could be the best line up of KR if GuMiho was picked as the wildcard.
As a Chinese wildcard for WorldAllstars, iAsonu is a great zerg who is ranked 11 in WCS Circuit but I don't think he is same level as either Snute or Elazer.
Both team are pretty much starting without their full best line up :/

It's true that some top-tier players aren't attending, but let's be real, any one of the six players on Team Korea that aren't sOs/ByuN could likely solo Team World if they went serious mode.
for what exactly did he deserve that?! no results whatsoever entire year if they wanted another protossthere's plenty much better choices. Not to mention Gumiho as obvious choice for wildcard...

better player? you living in 2012? because that is certainly not true in 2017 Elazer/Snute would've been much better choice than Scarlett for every single matchup
The sheer amount of saltiness in this thread is mind boggling. Is it really so terrible that some different players have a chance at money and it becomes slightly less top heavy in terms of earnings and players having a chance at a living wage?
All of the players that were voted in are incredibly talented. This isn't like Nation Wars where Nathanias represents the US (Love the guy).
"Oh, ByuN isn't as good as < >, he doesn't deserve to be here..."
Gumiho should have been there, Elazer should have been there. The recent champions of GSL and the Circuit aren't in GSL vs the world!
Well, I guess if iAsonu is there, putting sOs there is quite of a compromise, as it lowers the level of both sides. Won't be surprised if sOs doesn't make it to the RO8, he didn't deliver all year, even in NW4 he lost the only time he played.

Dont forget about the possible reaper change before the GSL vs World... any of those will hit BuyNs reaper control quite a bit: 1. Increase the Reaper’s cost to 75 minerals / 50 Vespene gas. This would make it harder for the Reaper user to transition into a normal game after a Reaper rush. 2. Reduce the Reaper’s KD8 Charge damage from 10 to 5. This is a direct nerf to the damage output of Reapers, especially to small and fragile units like Zerglings. 3. Adjusting the Reaper’s Combat Drugs so that it would also not heal if the Reaper recently attacked. This would result in Reapers being more fragile in long running fights with an opponent which could encourage a Reaper user to back off and let them heal to full more often.

sOs lost to soO in GSL Season 1 semis, and I am not sure where you got "destroying all Zergs" from because he certainly lost to Dark, ByuL, and Solar in SSL.
I cant wait to see this tournament. To me, this is a Blizzcon's pilot between Korea and foreigner players. Out of 16 players, 7 guarantee to go to Blizzcon (Stats/ Innovation/ Serral/ Neeb/ TY/ Nerchio/ soO), 4 highly likely go to Blizzcon (hero/ Dark/ Special/ Kelazhur) and Byun (still have chance to qualify Blizzcon).
Serral, yes, his spot in Blizzcon is granted. Nerchio is almost there, but there are scenarios in which he doesn't have enough points for that, yet. A decent performance in Montreal, or a bad one of those who are slightly behind him and he is also in Blizzcon, but no guarantee yet.

Oh yes there are such scenarios - just most unlikely to happen. He would have to score no points in challenger and in Montreal and Montreal has to be won by someone below Cham in rankings and Cham has to take second spot (while also scoring some 90 challenger points), True has to reach semifinal etc. etc.

Showtime, uThermal many others winning it all won't be a surprise. Snute, True and Kela with this guy in the semis won't be a surprise as well (True was there twice this year, Kela was there this year, Snute as well), and Major winning the mexican challenger while Nerchio getting no more then 90 points out of the EU challenger and not getting to the RO16 of Montreal is not such a crazy scenario. If Nerchio doesn't make it to Montreal of the EU challenger he can be like Showtime in Valencia, not making it even to the RO32.
Obviously, he is likely to be in Blizzcon, but the scenario above is one of those which put him out of it (and there are a few others).

people are being negative because they see all the great support EA provides for RA3 and C&C4 as well as the awesome live events Relic puts on for CoH and the SC2 fans feel left out.
Maybe if Blizzard had an annual celebration live event with 25,000+ people in early November like all the other RTS publishers do every year for their games the SC2 community would be in a better mood.
they'll probably be at least 60,000 people at the big Dawn of War 3 event because the game just came out like 3 months ago. Relic is in Vancouver so they'll probably use the Olympic Village and Stadium from the 2010 Winter Games.

Ikr. Prosperity is temporary, ingratitude is eternal.
Enjoy what you have while understanding that nothing will last forever. Envy will get you nowhere. Some people are just.....
(And being envious of videogames/esports, of all things! I don't even want to imagine how they view money/jobs/life.)
It's gonna be 4 days, of which the team competition is like half a day, the rest will be a single-elim 16man bracket, literarly the worst format possible for such an event, where seeing as many pairings of players as possible would be interesting, because the whole point of the event is to get matchups that you don't get too often nowadays - instead we get 8 players eliminated after one match ...
The attitude of "shut up and be glad that there is a tournament" is borderline insane. The tournament is there for us to watch, so it should matter what we think about it!

The tournament is there for sixteen players to compete for who's best among those in attendance. We're lucky to watch such elite competition so try and be a little less entitled. What stands out most is your total lack of regards for the logistical elements of running a event with competitors from across the world. I'm guessing you would prefer a week long event to accommodate all these matches? Are the foreign players supposed to pay for their own lodgings or is Afreeca doing that? Does Afreeca need to have translators available because of the language barrier between staff and foreign players? Doing so would require they grab translators from other divisions of Afreeca, leaving those groups shorthanded (for quite a long period of time if you had your way). It's a rather ignorant statement to assert they should tailor the tournament around you, when the most important parties, the players, and secondly, the crew required to produce the event, are far more important than someone who is just whining without putting any actual thought it.

So should not be able to say that we don't like a tournament format because every tournament is a gift from the heavens, not meant to be questioned? Stop acting like Afreeca is doing as a favor and all we can do is to accept with gratitude. It's a for-profit company, the tournament is a product and we are the customers, so of course the tournaments should be tailored around the viewers, being viewed is the fucking point of a broadcasted tournament. Even if I accepted your priorities, are you sure that the players wouldn't prefer a format that doesn't cut off half of them after the first match? Single-elimination tournaments are hated rather universally. The rest of what you wrote is just excuses, we have seen endless weekenders, often with significantly more than 16 players, played under much better formats, so this talk about lodgings makes absolutely zero sense for a 4-day long event.

Ro16 group stage would have worked.
If Afreeca stuck to their normal broadcast schedule that would be a 7 day tournament (4 days for groups 2 days for r8, 1 day for semis and finals (hell they might make it eight if they really stuck to it)). The tournament isn't being held at FreecUP, so that type of structure sounds really expensive.
I mean obviously it is valid to criticize the tournament format if you think it's not good enough. I don't like it either. At the same time i am happy that this tournament exists in the first place, so it's tough to be too critical

Every tournament could have a better structure tbh. loser's brackets are barely seen other than in qualifiers. But if they only had a certain amount of time a 16 player single elim is probably all they could do

Gyuri drew the bracket on stream
To elaborate, the eight invited players each got a separate part of the bracket and Gyuri drew each of their opponents from a pool of the eight voted players.

I'm also a bit disappointed in the format of the tournament. I think that not every game needs to be on the main stream, so having a losers bracket or a group stage would be preferable. But I get it that for some it's unacceptable to have a b stream - it also might double the production costs. Single elimination is great for the organizer but too harsh for the players in a game like this which is inherently unbalanced (3 races), and pretty volatile too.

the foriegn players' ballots were placed in a meat freezer at -20C for 3 hours before the drawing; Gyuri knew if it was a foreign player ballot he was touching when he picked it.
