After a shocking Group A that saw #1 seed INnoVation suffer elimination, soO, aLive, Dark and TY convened in the second RO16 group to determine who would join Scarlett and Zest in the quarterfinals. The first place finisher in Group B was facing down a matchup against Zest, while the survivor of the final match had Scarlett to look forward to in a best of five.
Initial Match 1: soO 2 - 0 aLive
- Game 1: soO defended aLive's early forays on to creep and utterly squashed aLive's first tank push with hydra/bane. The counterattack put him up 1-0.
- Game 2: aLive went for mech on Catalyst and, while he did damage with hellions, soO was able to macro up into brood lords. aLive pushed out with a maxed army, but was wiped out, allowing soO to take the match.
Initial Match 2: Dark 2 - 1 TY
- Game 1: TY's early ghost attack failed to kill Dark's third. Dark's mutalisks replied by killing 19 SCVs, giving him the space to get brood lords and win game one.
- Game 2: It took TY more than 30 minutes to take game two, but his ghosts and ranged liberators eventually starved Dark of gas before finishing him off.
- Game 3: It took 42 minutes to settle game three. Dark looked to be in a hopeless position, but a solitary infestor and a host of banelings killed a boatload of ghosts, giving Dark the momentum to attack with brood lords. More brood lords sealed the deal, sending Dark to the winners' match.
Winners’ Match: Dark 2 - 0 soO
- Game 1: soO jumped out to a lead on the back of a 12 pool, but Dark got the better of the mid game fights with roach/ravager, allowing him to go up 1-0.
- Game 2: soO's pool first failed to pay dividends on Ascension to Aiur. Dark held the initial effort and defended from there with queens and banelings en route to the Round of 8.
Losers’ Match: aLive 2 - 0 TY
- Game 1:aLive's air advantage allowed him to clean up much of TY's mech, giving him a 40 supply lead he rode to a victory.
- Game 2: aLive and TY both went for mech on Catalyst, but aLive built a supply lead through constant harassment that put him ahead on workers, army and bases, prompting a concession from TY.
Final Match: soO 2 - 0 aLive
- Game 1: aLive went for a hellbat/cyclone push, but soO had more than enough roaches to defend, setting up a lethal counterattack that put him up 1-0.
- Game 2: aLive opted for bio in game two, but made no headway against soO, who amassed a terrifying hydra/bane force. A zergling run ravaged aLive at home while his bio and tanks were overwhelmed mid-map, leaving him with no choice but to concede, sending soO through to the Round of 8 where Scarlett awaits.
Dark and soO advance to the Round of 8.
Code S resumes on Wednesday, Feb 21 9:30am GMT (GMT+00:00) with Group C of the Round of 16, featuring GuMiho, Classic, Dear, and Maru.

TY and Dark was probably one of thee best series I have seen. Crazy tension. I thought TY was going through but he ended up losing. soO losing to Dark though i was surprised.
|
So this is it. Ro8 is where Scarlett's run ends after all.
No one can stop soO once he enters that final road to the silver medal.

idk her ZvZ looks stellar at the moment, will be a fun match no doubt

Wait....we got a group B recap, but we didn't get a group A recap.
|
Sad that TY had to go out like that, his play against Dark was very good. He would have probably smahed soO had they met eachother.
Ro8 is unfortunately looking like 5 toss 3 zerg this season :/, I think Dark, Classic, and sOs will be the real contenders

I know scarlett is no dark, but considering how ridiculously outplayed soo got by dark I like her chances against him.

Few days ago TY and soO played each other in a small cup, and soO smashed TY in a BO7.

I think Scarlett's chances are good if she prepares well for soO

Terran is almost extinct in the foreign scene, sad if this happens in GSL as well.

In the katowice qualifiers TY beat soO 4-1, and that's an event that actually matters. Small online cups are irrelevant, no chance they play eachother seriously in it (not when they're in the same GSL group that week anyway)

Small tournament or not, nobody goes there to intentionally lose. Im just bored with the overhype of TY. Except his finals from 2 years ago he never had a good run in GSL.

Nobody goes to small tournaments to intentionally lose, but TY used completely different builds from what he did in GSL and the "smashing" was effectively caused by TY not scouting soO's same all-in 3 times. Which probably wouldn't happen in GSL.

This year just lined up such that Terran matched up against players they weren't as good against. I mean, TY and Dark were incredibly close, but TY's TvT wasn't there. Innovation could have made it out had he studied harder for Scarlett, and Group C has arguably the best Protoss against Gumiho and a recently-underperforming Maru.
Innovation wins, and suddenly Zest isn't there, and if TY wins against Dark, maybe he gets out first, and then maybe we have 2/2/3 instead of the potentially 0/3/5 or 1/3/4 that we're probably going to have.
EDIT: You wouldn't think that someone would be unprepared for cheese or early aggression two+ games in a row, but herO and Innovation are saying hi.
|
its always alive, alive also kicked once innovation out of a group and then didnt make it himself.... sigh alive... if you throw my favorite players out, then please advance yourself atleast... sigh
|
Maru and GuMiho keeping the Terran dreams alive...
I'm sending up a prayer to see some god-tier HotS level TvP out of Maru so he can make it out of this group! My only worry is he will face off against GuMi, and if he hasn't fixed his recent TvT form, he's going to potentially hit a road block before he gets a chance to face yet another Toss in the next round...
|
Scarlett had a nice cheese rush against soO on ladder the other day so you can bet she's got some builds ready for him

That set vs sOs is the first high-stakes Bo5/Bo7 she's won against a korean. Other than that she has something like five or six 2-3 losses. If you're expecting a W, well, don't be heartbroken.

times like these are where maru shines
never been a fanboy of his, but he's our terran hope

classic and dear will make it im not liking terrans chances against protoss, protoss is tough to play against in all leauges. =(

The infestor/baneling move in Dark vs TY was one of the sickest moves I've seen in a while.

That was the spot where the momentum turned so fucking beautiful. When Dark won that game I was ecstatic.

TY does not know the power of Raven, now,we need Reality.
|
my 2 Top players will meet in RO8 makes me sad as i want them both to win. i hope they give us a show we will never forget. go Scarlett go soO
it would be awesome to see a foreigner win a GSL but also i will never stop beliving that SoO can acheive the win

Except that soO is not gonna go full cocky and will prepare well. He never goes to full derp mode against foreigners like others..

Most Terrans don't in general. But hopefully more are willing to use it in lategame TvZ. If he had even a single raven with his pack of ghosts during game 3 of dark, he could've spotted that infestor and might have saved his ghosts from fungal+banes.
Was a great series between the two, but now I'm heavily an anti-fan for Dark due to it, I hope he gets crushed 3-0.

They said that about Dark until he discovered the power of foreign ZvZ in a tournament he may very well have won otherwise
I do agree in general though, odds are heavily in soO's favour (of course), but it's no guarantee.

I'm gonna put my tinfoil hat on here: what if soO let Dark take first in the group because he wanted to face Scarlett and not Zest?
|
just hope scarlett got eliminated. This WCS where foreigner can take GSL and WCS monney while Korean just have GSL is the most unfair system.
|
On February 15 2018 23:06 ShetFeast wrote: I'm gonna put my tinfoil hat on here: what if soO let Dark take first in the group because he wanted to face Scarlett and not Zest? Seems unlikely, unless I'm mistaken the game was played before TY vs Alive? He certainly wouldn't have wanted to face TY in an elimination bo3, his chances against Zest would most likely be much higher.
I hope soO can do the same thing he did at blizzcon when people though foreigner had a chance or would even be favoured against him (neeb, special). If he wins people are gonna call it free bracket again.

I've seen a few cases in the past where I thoroughly believe players have thrown games in group stages to get an easier opponent in the following round. But I don't think this is one of them. The risk of soO losing to TY in the final match would not be worth it

Hard to root for players when three of my favourite are in there. Sad to see TY go, I hope that Maru will represent Terran for the RO8 and up.
Still gratz to soO and Dark of course, and thanks for the recap, it's always welcome, especially now that I cannot watch the matches any more!
