I just discovered these and they are so great!!! I remember Warcraft 3 having something similar but maybe more basic.
I stopped playing and watching after the first year of HotS. I started watching and playing again when the game went F2P (ended up buying LotV anyway after a few weeks to see the end of the campaign story). I only recently tried the Tournaments tab under Verses.
These auto ladder tournaments, especially the weekend 6 round 16-player tournaments with a group stage, make playing 1v1 ladder so much more exciting by giving me the feeling that something is on the line (the digital trophy).
Why isn't this mode promoted more? I also read 2v2 was maybe going to get this mode but it looks like that was cancelled, which is a shame because 2v2 is quite active.

What did you have in mind? I think they switch out trophies you get from winning tournaments every year or so.
I enjoyed those tournaments a lot until I waited 60+minutes for the first game to start once. I think the original interval of 30min per match doesn't work in LotV, maybe 20 would be more appropriate now.
i wish they had more tournaments for different game modes. namely archon mode because i feel like it would be a good way to promote it and get some reliable matches without long queue times.
they are very fun though! I like to look up some basic stuff in my opponents match history beforehand, it really adds another dimension

Yeah, I think thatd be cool. I think rotating modes would be cool because theres a sense of urgency or like, rarity to make you queue up. I kinda procrastinate winning tournaments because I feel like i have all the time in the world. As opposed to like Dota 2, where I have to queue up on that Saturday.
I recall before LOTV release, they were thinking of incorporating a type of "Brawl" feature, and the tournament mode would be kinda cool way to push that out.

ur joking right lol archon queueing is the longest already, the 25 min wait doesn't bother me tho its a great addition
I like tournament mode quite a bit, but I would love to have the option to do BO3 tournament, probably would take 5 hours but it would give a nice "esport" vibe.
It's pretty fun but for some reason the matchmaking system is really bad there. It's not too uncommon to get a tournament full of diamond players and then there are two master players at most. And it's called a master tournament :^)

I don't know if having auto tournaments for all game modes all the time would be the best, but I am a little baffled as to why they haven't added special auto tourneys that open every weekend, or that rotate between modes (2v2, Archon, Free-for-All). I've felt like it would add a little something interesting without splitting the players too thin like I worry 24/7 2v2 or Archon auto tourneys might do during the weekdays. And I'm 100% certain that everyone at Blizzard understands the potential that special/Brawl-like events have...
Maybe they feel that Co-op Mutations fill that space too much already? Idk.
Another thing they could be doing with auto tourneys is run them with potential new ladder maps, perhaps every weekend, once a month, or however often. It'd be something fun, or at least different, for players, and would get them more feedback about maps before they're plopped into the ladder.
As for the matchmaking (Diamond/Platinum league players frequently seeing Masters), I wonder if there are just too few people joining the tourneys in each region every time they start for it to be better? But I also hear a decent(-ish) amount of players around Diamond say they're fine with it or that they even prefer to see a couple of higher league players each time, so maybe the types of people who are more likely to play the tourneys also tend to welcome that a little more?

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but yeah, I 100% intended to make it rotational based on differing game modes. Get people trying different things, maybe you can excite some players by igniting the spike when they team up and play archon mode or 2v2 again, because they haven't had a good reason to.
So EU servers were down, and I went to NA and lost my placement matches intentionally and got to bronze (during very early lotv) and joined a bronze tourney as a daimond eu player. I faced another daimond player in the first round, and then two master players in a row. I played the games of my life and grew tremendously as a player. Then in the finals, on this 4 player map that had this texture that made everyones pc lag until they patched it I scout my opponent last. It was a PvP, I am all pumped with adrenaline and when i reach his base, he has not walled of. He has a pylon and 2 cannons placed really neatly, like something you would get as a starting base in the campaign. There is a zealot on patrol between the two cannons. I thought this is funny, you have no idea what I did to get here, so I gift him the win and the trophy. Today I wonder if he just played whimsical to trick all the other master players on his side of the bronze tourney to leave him alone ... or maybe I did something nice?

I'd argue the opposite. They kinda don't feel special if they're every 2 hours. If they were every 15 minutes I feel like they'd just feel like ladder games instead of something special you take time for. War3 only had tournaments on the weekends, and they rotated out modes like I described, as does Dota 2. I don't think it needs to be that scarce.

Nah dude, you totally just got wrecked by the NA special. He probably was on 10 bases carriers. But no honestly his opponents probably forfeited because they were in another ladder game.

A rotating weekly mode would be nice (e.g. 2v2, 3v3, 4v4), with 1v1 being permanent. Maybe once a week or once a month doing a Bo3 bracket of 16 or 32 players to give more average and low rank players the eSports tournament feeling. The 6-round 16-player with group stage tournaments we have now every weekend are great but a Bo3 would take it to the next level. Maybe a decrease the game time limit to 20 minutes per game (except the finals).
