firstly, fuck reapers look shit. in the gameplay videos there's too many of them and they seem to run around each other a lot like swarming zerglings. you'd think if you had a unit that could cliff-hop they'd be like a swat team with like five commandos or something
anyhow, someone mentioned that reaping might be a marine upgrade. it made me think about upgrades in general, such as how many scarabs you can build, or the disruption web ability, or just tougher armour or something - should upgrades come into effect immediately for all units on the map simultaneously, or only for the units that are produced after it is finished?
for example, an opponent could think, what the fuck are those marines doing out there, they can't do nothing down there and i'll just kill them with my siege tanks. but then all of a sudden they magically have jet packs on their backs and hop up to kill them (did headquaters call in with instructions on how to use them all of a sudden and they were too dumb to use them before or something and the whole upgrading time was translating the foreign manufacturer's instructions sheet into english)?
Poll: Do reapers suck? (Vote): Upgrades should only come into effect for newly produced units (Vote): All units are simultaneously upgraded, wherever they are on the map (Vote): Yes

Its the future, data transfers and upgrades and shit happen instantaneously.
|
Well it was instant in SC1 and unless they lost technology in the 4 year gap between SC1 and SC2, it makes sense that they're instant upgrades
I cant see reapers being an upgrade but if they were I'd imagine it'd be like the hydralisk to lurker upgrade, its individual for each marine
of course the jetpacks would probably be 0 mins 25gas or something low like that, and probably a pretty quick buildtime, if any at all
|
Yeah, Reapers look like they suck, except in certain harass situations...
I'll just buy marines to kill immortals. They're probably cheaper...

First of all, I agree that having less reavers but more commando like would be cooler. I havent been a huge fan of the numbers of units in general that has been shown in the videos. However...

What is the different between this and anything that happens in BW? Mutas turn into guards, hydras gain lurk abilities, and seige tanks are able to seige once research is done, no matter where they are. Marines stim, lings run faster... it goes on and on. One of the best parts of BW is the timing involved in completing upgrades. Think of VODs and the announcers when a player finishes an upgrade at a crucial time and turns the tide of a battle. That is quality stuff.

i just hope you have to manually upgrade marines into reapers like you have to upgrade hydras into lurkers, unit by unit.
|
Simultaneously. I think it was Empire Earth where you could have units from one age and units from another age at the same time, and frankly, thats pretty stupid.
|
Well your poll depends on the upgrade. When tanks get their siege upgrade, its pretty important, but not the same as all of your marines suddenly being able to fly around. Plus tanks are already expensive so in a way you've already paid for siege mode.
And changing marines to reapers might not be considered an upgrade. Look at hydras and mutas; lurkers and devourers might be higher tech, but they aren't the same as an upgrade.
|
Yeah, damn those mutas that fly into thin air behind your base when you didn't build a stargate, and then you know there'll be guardians raining death on your base shortly thereafter! Bastards
|
While forcing some sort of retrofit seems like a nice idea, it'd slow down the gameplay pace quite a bit, and nobody wants that. It's a design aspect more suitable for pure macro games like Age of asdfghjkl.
|
Reapers are cool. I think you seriously underestimate their ability to harass the enemy.
It will no longer be enough to put a single turret near your mineral line now that reapers can, at any time, jump en masse to the back of your base, kill a bunch of workers and fall back just as quickly. Also good luck chasing them with anything but air units.
And I don't think they should be all commando-like. I think if the there's weren't already a protoss unit called the reaver, that's what they would have been called instead of reapers. They're space pirates. They're an unorganized bunch. Aaaaarrrrrrgh!
Judging by the fact that the reaper model is so unlike the marine model, it seems unlikely that they are an upgrade for regular marines.

space pirates would be a way cooler name that reapers.
they could have a cool backstory that way too!
special ability, pillage the opponents treasury for 1/3 of his money.

Personally I would really like it if they brought back "Marauders" [old marine name IIRC?]
edit: and if they're going to do things like rename archon -> twilight archon, they should rename observer -> witness.
witness was such a badass name. dunno why they changed it ;;

I think some of you guys missed the poll question. Since there was only one legitimate answer, I chose it.

I think you're right, Marauder was the old name for Marines. Marine was the right choice for that unit, but if they're going to keep Reapers in whatever form, Blizzard should rename them Marauders.
Because, yeah, Marauder is super bad ass.

Marauder is definitely a better name, someone should suggest that to them. I don't really like Reaper as a name
