I am not gonna buy i5 4590 etc now and then I am going to regret it in few months. (I did it, bought AMD phenom x6 few weeks before i3 2500 came out). None, but probably 20% over Haswell*. Also remember that if Haswell has 1.6x the singlethreaded performance of your CPU and new CPU is 20% faster than Haswell, then that would mean: Haswell would be 1.6x upgrade (60% faster) Skylake would be (1.6*1.2x) upgrade (92% faster) - worthy of over 1.5x as much money, for the performance per dollar/euro vs how much of an upgrade you would get. that's why it might be worth waiting. Even if it fell short of +20% over Haswell, it would make the actual "upgrade" a much more significant jump, not that Phenom II to Haswell isn't already groundbreaking for everything that likes singlethreaded performance and for some games in particular; + Show Spoiler + There's also the fact that it might be an opportunity to get in on the first mainstream ddr4 socket. RAM used for mainstream skylake has not really been confirmed though; there's rumors of using ddr3, or at least ddr3 support on the IMC. I suck at the simple answers part. + Show Spoiler + Even Haswell which was widely considered to be terrible managed to be 10-15% over sandy depending on the load, assuming you had pushed both CPU's equally hard. If you read stuff like tomshardware, anandtech etc then Intel was made out to be literally hitler for releasing a CPU that was only that much better *Some of those gains would be eaten into by Broadwell release, before Skylake hits. Counting performance Nehalem to Sandy to Haswell to Skylake is much easier than including all of the single digit % gains from the die shrinks between, IMO. + Show Spoiler + Actual Skylake performance will depend some on how well Intel's 14nm node performs for hitting good clock speeds - going from 32nm to 22nm, Intel lost some speed (usually ~200-300mhz at high OC's) but that can very easily be blamed on the transition to finfet and if that's the case, it could be a one-time penalty to clock speeds and their next die shrink would not be expected to lose clock speeds (it could even clock higher) Phenom II x6 isn't that far behind 2500k overall - i wasn't around checking numbers and benching stuff back then, but AFAIK it was somewhat competitive with Intel's mainstream CPU's, but was already lacking singlethreaded performance compared to first gen core (as it had 50% more cores) - so when second gen came out ~20+% better there was a big performance gap there. The x6 did still have the 6 full cores though, it just wasn't very relevant in 2009-2011 for a gamer (and still isn't, most of the time, five years later). Even in ~2009-2010, it needed to use 5-6 cores to compete well against Intel's offerings, i think. The gap in singlethreaded performance would be largely because you chose the weaker 6 core CPU instead of the relatively strong quad core, at the time. Releasing another quad core that is yet stronger just makes the downfalls of having a weaker 6 core CPU more obvious. I bought a first gen core CPU about two months before Sandy Bridge release, that's what got me into more advanced tech stuff :D Are you still using the x6? Are you overclocking etc? (what speeds it is at) Since 14nm manufacturing was delayed (broadwell) but skylake not necessarily, we could see it on unlocked desktop platform by the end of the year

I still use x6 1055T (2,8Ghz), no intent to OC or whatever else Can't they hit like ~4ghz? Not so sure on the x6's. If you care about sc2 performance it's worth taking the half hour to learn OCing (at least when buying new parts)

I currently have Z77 mini-ITX mobo with a 3570k, but I moved my build into a micro-ATX case to open up the option for micro mobos and SLI/XF. I'd like to slowly upgrade it over the course of the next year, either by replacing my 7950 with a 970 first, then upgrading the mobo/CPU, then adding a second 970 after prices drop, or upgrading the mobo/CPU first, adding a second 7950, and then selling both 7950s for 970s after the next generation comes out and prices drop.

Ivy Bridge to Haswell, assuming you're overclocking ivy, would probably only see you ~8-13% performance gains (if that 3570k is at ~4.7ghz) while 7950 to 970, again assuming both overclocked the performance difference is somewhere around 70%. If you was buying Haswell for some reason, z87 boards do not support the Devil's Canyon chips out of the box and you wouldn't have a CPU to guarantee that the newest bios was on it. Buying a regular 4670k and losing up to even 200mhz of average OC headroom wouldn't be as fun.

So why the hell is it getting so hot all of a sudden? I had noticed my fans being a little finicky within the past month or so, but they had been successfully doing their job keeping temps under control until now. At the moment however of the 2 fans on the GPU, the right one seems to work when it pleases (for like a period of 5 minutes) and the left one won't spin at all. in this video I caught the fan when it was actually working- you can see at around the 30sec mark in MSI afterburner on the graph at the bottom where the fan kicked in and the temps started dropping. They started up in the 80's and dropped down into the 50's while the one fan stayed on (just had catalyst control center, msi afterburner, HWMonitor, and chrome open). In this video you can see that the fan is no longer spinning (even though I have fan speed set to 100% manually and catalyst control center reports the speed at 97%), and the temps immediately raised back up into the high 80's low 90's celsius even though it was largely idle. I don't feel comfortable using the card at all while it's running so hot, so I really want to get this solved ASAP. Is this card salvageable at all? I'm assuming I can just replace the heatsink on it (this was the first result on newegg for example) to take care of it. I'd rather not buy a whole new graphics card unless it's absolutely necessary, but I also don't want to go out and buy a new heatsink if the whole card is fucked. So what do you guys think? I also have the luxury of having a microcenter within driving range until I go back to school this Sunday, so I can go pick up what I need in person if I get it figured out today or tomorrow. Thanks a whole lot!

Is the GPU under warranty? I'd guess that even if not, the fans on there might be fixable/replaceable; i'm not very knowledgeable in this area I'd rather not buy a whole new graphics card unless it's absolutely necessary, but I also don't want to go out and buy a new heatsink if the whole card is fucked. I think it's cooling problem only, but a lot of people use such things as excuses to buy new hardware :D

I have a multi-monitor set up that I can't turn off using the this command line or using this program I used to just use NirCmd and it worked for a few years, but recently (i dont know why, really) it just results in the monitors turning themselves on again after a few seconds. They turn off, then before the monitors give me the "no signal detected" message, they turn back on. I didnt change anything in the monitors themselves, theyve been the same this whole time. I just dont have any idea why this started happening or how to fix it since I can't really identify where the problem is coming from.

I looked up Wake-on-LAN and turned it off in my network driver, but it still diddn't resolve the issue. I tried looking for something like that in bios, but i didnt see anything that resembled it.

Edit* Nevermind. i can't figure out the rhythm of how this thing works. It just does and doesn't Sometimes the display will turn off, then turn on right away, sometimes the displays will turn off then stay off for like 10 seconds, then turn on, and sometimes they just stay off for a minute and im guessing that is when they'll stay off.

Few years old PC, that was supposedly "didn't work". I launch him casually, see that it freezes during Windows startup and since I was said to just "make this work, no data to safe" I started with checking stuff. I checked everything I could, RAM few times, HDD, GPU and CPU, nothing showed any errors. Cleaned inside, checked connections. All fine. I decided to give it another go and Windows startups normally. Few restarts, cleaning of the system, all fine. Weird. Next few hours off, the issue reemerges. Randomly freezes on startup, sometimes even on DOS programs. BIOS doesn't tell anything. Flashed BIOS to newest version, replaced the battery. Still the issue is here. Curious: if I check the RAM with MemTest or anything else, then I can just launch the PC and Windows starts and everything works like nothing happened. If I let it off for few hours, I'm sure I will have the freezing issue again. My only guess now is that motherboard itself is faulty, but I can't confirm that for 100%. Any ideas? I'm curious actually myself, what might be wrong.
