I'm looking into replacing my modem. I have an old 2wire through Qwest (now Century Link). I have been continually losing my internet connection over the past couple days. Century Link ran some tests and determined I need a new router. They recommended the Actiontec PK5000.
I've looked up some reviews on this modem and they are about 80% negative. Century Link said this router is what I need to get as it is "compatible with their service". I don't know enough about modems to know if that is total BS or not. They also mentioned after I plug the modem in I need to visit their website and download a program, which I'd rather not do. The old Qwest programs were absolute crap; I'd rather not download unneccesary software.
My main question is, are there any disadvantages to ignoring this recommendation?
I'd gladly take any suggestions on a decent modem if I don't end up needing to go with the Actiontec one.

Thats hilarious I have this same issue.
Something about Power Adjustments and the modem needs a new replacement because I assume either the adapter or the delivery unit inside the modem is shit.
Im headed over to Cox to score a free one though. Maybe check with your ISP?
Also someone correct me, but for at least cable Im pretty sure any modem will work, you just need to call your ISP and tell them the Mac address and serial number of the device.

That's also hilarious. I also have Qwest, well rather Century Link, and my 2wire modem died out a month ago. I lost my internet connection and eventually called in and they determined I needed a new modem as well. I was somewhat mad when I was told my new modem was going to be $100 with an additional $15 shipping.
They never told me what model I was going to receive, neither if I had any other options for other models and cheaper methods of shipping. The 2wire modem I had a bit better than my current modem I have (Zybez PK5000Z), because my ethernet cable has to be re-plugged every time I shutdown my modem, and the fact I got it for free directly form Qwest.
I would call them again and ask if you have any other modem models available. I had pleasant experience with their tech support, but their business and retail department was horrid. If they are trying to get you to buy a modem with such low ratings, I'm just going to make a biased assumption and assume they're just trying to grab as much money as they can from you.
Edit: I just remembered during my talk with tech support, I asked whether I could use a modem that was not from Century Link. They said it was okay, but they wouldn't be able to troubleshoot your modem if you had issues and they wouldn't cover it either, so that's another option.
