Hello. I just reformatted my computer and I need to download new video drivers. I go to the AMD page, fill in my driver card which is a 5800HD series for notebooks. I get the catalyst_mobility_64 exe which is supposed to install a download manager from which to aquire the latest drivers from AMD. I install it and afaik this program is supposed to start automatically when it's installed. It doens't however, but I have to go to the install path, which is directly on C/AMD/ I get the download manager open, but when I've clicked start download and accepted the default path into a temp folder, I just get a pop up saying 'Download has been cancelled" and that's it. I'm a retard when it comes to computers, and my google results have all ended in people having the same problem and not receiving help. I'm currently playing SC2 on 1-10 fps, and it's quickly pushing me over the edge to insanity. Has anyone experienced the same issue? Any ideas on what might work?
So far I've tried reinstalling the download manager, redownloading the installer, installing everything in different folders and using it without anti virus and firewall on.

Can't you just get the drivers directly? Those auto downloaders arent great.
EDIT: I was a major idiot when I wrote this.

Not as far as I can tell. Not from AMD at any rate. I'd have to go through some third party web site, and that would seem very risky.

maybe you should try the omega shells drivers ...they're pretty good for gaming

What's omega shells? I'm pretty sure I need drivers that are for my graphics card right?

omega shells drivers. they come with predefined settings that enhance your graphics card. btw...aren't u running on windows 7? if so , it should install the graphics card driver on it's own... if not do an windows update and check the optional tab. best of luck

Could you provide me with a link? When I google 'omega shells driver' I get articles about a laser and 'direct drive implosion experiments'. Googling 'omega shells' leads to 'Backdoor - anonymous redirecting your weblinks'
I just can't find anything that's related to drivers.
I have basic graphic drivers from windows 7 that I'm running, but those are sucking more ass than Pamela Anderson. The recommended settings in SC2 are all ultra, and I have 1-10 fps running on lowest.

stab in the dark here, but if you have steam, go to the steam drop down menu (first tab) and click "check for Video card updates" which is the 4th option down.

That sadly just gives me a link to the AMD downloader :/

ah that sucks.
maybe try searching "device manager" in start menu and right click on your graphics card. Then click update drivers. or if your out of ideas, try install it and then reinstall it.
out of ideas me

Uhm yeah, so I've tried uninstalling it and installing it again a couple of times from a real .exe that I found that doesn't use the catalyst downloader that's just bugged for me. The first time I did it, I got some AMD drivers from april, which is a step forward, but it didn't help the 1fps issue and it's not the latest version. The second time I did it I didn't get anything but the microsoft standard drivers from 2006. The third time I did it it now says I have an 'ATI Fire Pro m7820' graphics card, while I actually have a 5870HD mobility. I mean it's the same install exe... I don't understand why it gives different results every time I reinstall it, and now it apparently tricked my computer into thinking I've got another graphics card altogether.

that his problem, the download fails for no reason everytime

@spector: he was speaking of a "download manager" or "downloader", and i dont know exactly what he is talking about. there is no download manager on this amd site, just a direct driver download.
@Euronyme: i assume you have installed some sort of "download manager plugin" for his browser, and this program is broken? just deinstall this "download manager" you are talking about and download normally. or use another browser, there are plenty. i suggest firefox or chrome.

I'm not sure but I think you are talking about these : http://www.omegadrivers.net/
They were good but the author has stopped working on them and so they are outdated now.
I'm sure some others "tweaked" drivers exist but to be honest I would not advice to use "tweaked" drivers, we are not in the Windows 98/XP era anymore and the performance gains are too low to justify doing it...

It's called the catalyst control center that searches for driver updates and downloads them. I'm not talking about a plugin. After the third reformatting in a month, I've finally kick started the catalyst shit, but it still says that there are no new drivers, even though the last one came out a week ago, and it's currently on drivers from 2010. This is the 'download manager' I'm talking about btw. http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx As I've already mentioned I've also tried the 'direct driver download' (for my specific graphics card on notebook). At first install I get old drivers. After second uninstall and install I get nothing at all. Just windows drivers. After third uninstall and install I got drivers for another graphics card entirely (this is all from the same exe) and after that the device manager said I had another graphics card. Still lagging in games that shouldn't though. After that I wasn't able to get rid of that other graphics card, so I reformatted again and got stuck at drivers from 2010. Great.
Today I bought a new computer for nearly 2000 euros. I'm going to have to live on porridge for the rest of the month. I'll go out in the forest a quiet night and make a huge fire to throw the laptop in and watch it burn. And I'll enjoy it.
