How much of an improvement for SC2 do you get from overclocking with a 6600k for sc2 vs standard boost?
What is the best price/performance cpu to get if you don't plan on overclocking for playing sc2?
I noticed HDR is an option in the menu for SC2 graphics options. Will the new HDR monitors take full advantage of this option? Do you need an HDR capable monitor to benefit from this option?

I think around +30% including putting RAM up to ~3200mhz

Probably the $64 Pentium G4560 (2c4t 3.5ghz Kaby Lake) but it's not neccesarily a good all around buy.

AFAIK that's just software stuff that helps with rendering but isn't set up to take advantage of HDR monitors

I was thinking about buying a new monitor for my home PC come Christmas and did a little research. Will upgrade from a 24" benq to most likely an ultrawide 34" or a 27". What I was ideally looking for was: 34 inch 3440 x 1440 resolution G Sync 144Hz refresh rate Below 5ms response time
And well... A monitor like this doesn't exist LOL. Closest I can get is 100Hz refresh rate. That or lower resolution to 2560 or go with 27".
My question is: Is 100Hz good enough? Acer Predator X34 and Asus PG348Q are the choices here. I might get lucky and Acer might drop the Predator X34P with 120Hz come Xmas.
Or get a 27" or 35" and sacrifice resolution for 144Hz here?
Also my choices are IPS panel based. Are VA and TN any better? Not only for gaming but general everyday use.
Maybe a monitor like I described will come out in 2018...

Probably depends on what you want to do with it. A lot of people survive just fine with only 60 Hz.

16 by 9 144hz IMO
21 by 9 has some good uses but a lot of questionable support in games and if it means giving up refresh rate too then meh
TN is generally considered to be a downgrade relative to IPS but it's faster, cheaper and not too bad if the screen is the right way up and directly in front of you

So my PC has started to do weird bootloops and I'm afraid after 4 years the mobo or cpu is starting to go.
HDD and RAM tests are all coming back fine. So the bootloops must be related to something a little more important. Some days I need to turn my pc on 3 or 4 times before its stable for a few hours.
This is making me think about CPU/Mobo/RAM
I was hoping to get an i7 at some point but really can't afford that right now or in the near future.
So I am thinking of the 7600K
Is it at all possible to use my existing DDR3 ram with the cpu? Or do all the Kalby Lakes and motherboards require I use new DDR4 RAM?
Any ideas on most cost efficient way to get a decent mobo to OC with the cpu?
I have currently a hyperevo212 that works great, replaced a bad fan a year ago. I have a full size case as well. I remember it was suggested on here and its quite large.
Don't need SLI either.
I really just want a solid motherboard that will let me push a stable overclock. I've read that the 7600ks can hit 5 or close to so long as they have a good mobo
At Canada Computers I can get:
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_311_1326&item_id=096846
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_1207_1206_1460&item_id=103585
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=4_1210_65&item_id=102845
For about 700 CAD after taxes.
I wonder if its worth it or if there are savings with the 6600k with motherboard? Tips? If my current DDR3 can run on a 6600K w/mobo I could always do that and then grab the ddr4 in a few months as I make a little more money.
Alternate option:
Put the money aside and wait for my pc to really screw the pooch and based on what I've been able to save upgrade then.
This thread is great, and I always enjoy the advice.

Can you describe the symptoms more? That sounds like it could be PSU related

It works so long as i dont have a stick of ram in the 4th ram slot right to left.
Doesnt matter what stick is in there it will bootloop if a stick is in it.
Will boot up cpu fan will spin will stop pc will shut down boot itself again.
Resetting cmos to put bios on stock does nothing.
Running no oc on the cpu or ram reduces boot loop with 4 ram sticks to 50 50 chance.
PSU is less than a year old its an evga 600w iirc 80 rated gold. Dont think its the psu tbh.
The computer still runs games etc. Its just frustrating that sometimes it wont boot and my 16gb ram is now 12
So if an upgrade is worth it for 1080p gaming and the odd video making ill do it. But if its not quite that big a benefit or if saving for longer gets me a bigger benefit then im ok w those options too.
If its worth just spending 200 on a new z77 board thats also an option. Tbh im not sure.
I stream sometimes on twitch but i run it through my laptop at 720p at 3k bitrate 30fps through cap card So dont need nuts overhead for twitch encoding while playing.
Have a 1070 use a 144hz 1080 monitor as well btw
No ssd because ive been putting money into other hardware upgrades.

Might be fixable by tweaking memory/imc voltages but otherwise i don't know
7600k/7700k are nice but a bit overpriced atm and rumors point to the replacement (14nm++ 6-core?) droping next quarter

Canada13372 Posts
Only one quarter? Ill live and try to tweak voltages and live with 12gb ram then
I assume its same socket and similar price bracket if its in the i5 lineup?

That one would probably be i7 and incompatible with z170 with the way that Intel is going but maybe there'd be a 4c8t or 6c6t i5

I dont think i would really need an i7. What i have now is good and if a new i5 is better thats good enough. Now if i magically get some much higher paid job or ectra income then maybe ill squeeze out for the 7 series
But is it really worth waiting for the next iteration? You can effectively wait forever if you just wait XD

If it was really +50% cores on Intel mainstream then maybe~

I guess I'll wait til the announcement at least. If its not 6 core I'm probably not gonna wait til next year. I don't think it'll be worth another 6-7 months wait
Reading into it:
https://segmentnext.com/2017/06/09/intel-coffee-lake-processor/
Looks like yeah the next gen will have the 6 cores indeed. With 3.1 base and 4.2 boost clocks and be out by end of the year.
Worth waiting then. I'll just squirrel the dollars away some more and hopefully I can afford the i7 monster machine
It should runs DDR4 though I'll keep an eye out for a killer sale because that won't change. Sound like a good idea cyro?

That source isn't credible at all
yeah they all run ddr4, Intel since 2015 and AMD since their new gen

Ok so ddr4 on good sale, wait for next announcement from intel then decide after that.
When do these companies usually announce this stuff? Is there a big trade show i should be following?

They tend to be rather circumspect with dates, since once they set dates customers will stop buying their current stuff while they wait. I think Linus (from Linus Tech Tips) had an interview with an Intel guy awhile back that covers on some of this but I can't find it.

So these things literally fall from the heavens? Geez

Let's say I want to build a PC in the next ~30 days. Is waiting for the Threadripper the proper move here? Anything else coming from Intel?

Nothing coming in that time period and it depends on what you're building the system for
