maybe you just have a proxy set in chrome. Go to settings --- > advanced settings ------> Network -----> change proxy-settings. Then an internet explorer should pop up . Go to lan settings and look if there's any proxy set if yes, delete everything in the boxes and select the first box .

When i try to do that, i get the following ominous message: "Your network proxy settings are being managed by an extension." I also have extensions in chrome that i cannot delete or disable.

I'm not sure what caused it, it may have been the installation of Spybot - Search&Destroy*, or to do with a warning I got yesterday from an Avast extension*, Safe Shopping (or something like that) being enabled. Anyway I'm almost sure it was related to security software due to the reasons stated above*. But I had to let you and anyone reading this in future know that yours is valuable information: what you suggested solved my problem in one fell swoop. Thank you.

Check in control panel > uninstall a program > and see if you have rocket tab installed. If so, uninstall it... Worked for me. On any computer... Uninstall the program that's called Rocket Tab, if its not installed try a google search on similar programs to rocket tab. Btw, its malware. Good luck.
