I'm currently attmping to put back together an old gaming PC I had been using for my little sister but I've run into a bit of a spot. and I can't seem to climb out of it.
I have the CPU, GPU, RAM, PSU and 2 hard drives installed (correctly, I do believe) but the small pin connectors (pwr LED, reset etc) aren't properly in so I can't get it to started. I eventually got it started with trial and error but the computer started running with 2 green lights on my motherboard, 1 yellow and 1 red. I have gigabyte GA-ep35-ds3l motherboard.
So the main issues are - Do I need more than 3 double pin connectors (1 reset, 1 power led and 1 unknown (clip ripped off) ) because those are all I have.
If I can solve the first issue I can kinda move onto the second issue. What are the 3 main pins connections on the motherboard I need those to go into cause right now I'm just trail and error to figure out the other one.
Thanks images in spoiler + Show Spoiler +
NOTE ON COMPUTER: It's something I pulled out of my basement and hastily put together before I build my sister a computer in the next month or so to get her started. The mess of wires etc is just because it's soon to be disposed of I usually get after people who treat their creations with such disregard so I wanted to clarify that hahaha

Here is the manual for the motherboard you have there:
http://download1.gigabyte.us/Files/Manual/motherboard_manual_ga-ep35-(d)s3l_e.pdf
The front panel connectors are explained on page 25 and first half of page 26. There seems to be two different ways to connect a power led.
On the motherboard, on that color coded base of the pins, do you see those black spots for some of the pins? That's supposed to be a "+" (plus). For the front panel connectors, the side of the connector with the colored wire has to end up in those + pins on the board.
The board might not want to boot if the power and HDD lights are connected the wrong way. For the power button and reset switch, I think it shouldn't matter.
Nothing should really be required, you should be able to boot without anything connected. I think I once had a strange board that didn't want to boot without the lights, but I might be wrong and might have been stupid at that time.
You can try to start stuff ghetto without anything connected. I think the power switch is supposed to go into where it's color coded in red. The legend for those two pins says "+PW-". If you touch and short those two pins with a screw driver, that should be the same as pressing down on a power button, and the machine should boot. I was looking at this picture you shared: http://i.imgur.com/AdFXQCE.jpg
A power button and a reset switch works the same way. If that broken connector you have is for the power button, I guess you could instead use the reset switch for that.
Same with LEDs, you could use the HDD light to show power.

Update: I've connected the cables correctly, no issue there, but now it won't boot to my TV via VGA connection. Runs (graphics card/CPU fan going) but no picture. I've taken my ram out and my GPU and wiped them with a soft rag and made sure to place my RAM in properly and tried both ram slots (2 in Yellow, 2 in Red) still no vidya
Any ideas?

The video output will be from your video card OR the integrated graphics, not both. Make sure that you're plugging the screen into the right place (..if that even applies to that board/cpu, i'm not sure tbh)

Have you been able to get a picture at all on your TV in this test phase, or hasn't it worked at all? Switching your RAMs should have no impact on whether or not you get any picture on your screen.
As Cyro said ; Have you tried both VGA outputs? (onboard and videocard VGA slot)
On your videocard, you have a 6pin-connector to your power supply. Some power supply's have 2 6-pin connectors, and I have had experience where only one 6-pin connector works, unless you have both connected (lets say #1 & #2). Where #1 is the 6pin "closest" from your power supply and #2 is "farthest" from your power supply. If you used #2 , it might be possible that it won't give enough power to power your videocard. (your videocard fans will still rotate due to the power from your MB). It should be only one cable, but try and connect the closest one (#1). This situation is unlikely, but possible..
Do you have a computer monitor available? Please test the computer on the monitor if possible, in the small chance that your output ratio is out of range and therefor not working. Your computer may sent XXX x XXX Resolution, whilst the minimum output for your tv has an higher XXX x XXX resolution (i.e. computer poops out 640x480, whilst minimum of your tv is 1024x768).

So I grabbed a regular computer monitor and still no luck. The only thing I can think of is that I don't have it connected properly but as far as I can tell it's all hooked up. Could it be the case it wants my fan hooked up to start? Like I have no idea, it makes the normal start-up whine (harddrives and gpu\cpu etc= and there´s no malfunction notifcations (the motherboard beeping) for lack of power to the GPU\Cpu so Im totally lost. It just doesnt want to show the monitor.
Any other troubleshooting ideas?

Really don't know, just triple check that you tried every display output (integrated graphics and also the gpu)
you don't have all fans hooked up? Some boards refuse to do much without having something in the cpu_fan header (the one labeled "cpu_fan" or something very similar)
|
sorry I have the CPU fan hooked up. I just plugged in my mouse andsomething strange occurs (using old mouse connector, not USB) the mouse is powered (red LED) even when the system isnt running. I have a feeling the board is still giving power and not fully starting but I cant put my finger on why. I have 2 6pin connectors plugged into my GPU, mz ram is installed correctly, my two HDDs are installed correctly (could it be the case that the HDDs need to be replaced exactly as they were taken out? if so that could be the issue because I just plugged the sata cables in and the psu connector. Maybe thats it?

just read i should unplug the power supply and hold the power button for 1 minute so ima give that a go wish me luck hahaha first computer ive put together that just wont fucking go

no dice... the only thing funny is that there is a red light orange light green light green light showing on my motherboard but it SHOULD work! grrr

my PSU has a 8pin and connector coming out of it but cant find anzwhere to plug it in, other then that its all plugged in properly.

You should have a ~24pin and an ~8pin plugged in for cpu/motherboard power. The 8 pin should be near the CPU socket, at the top but will vary motherboard to motherboard
sorry i thought this was mentioned before.
|
Did you plug CPU power into the board? The header for that is either 4-pin or 8-pin and it's somewhere around the CPU socket. That connector uses the same large style for its pins as used for the 24-pin motherboard power.
The 8-pin connector from the PSU could be either for the CPU, or it could be GPU power. It's not supposed to fit into the wrong place, but if you use violence you could still force it into a wrong connection, so be careful.

I'm currently typing on the computer now :D Thanks everyone. I hadn't worked before on a system that didn't take the PSU's integrated Mobo cable and uses an exterior one. I found the old cable and plugged it in and it works. It was hidden under the CPU fan and I had to take out the fan to slot it in before reinstalling the fan.
So thanks again! :D Now my sister can rock some games with me while I'm away 8 months of the year, awesome days.
Special thanks to Cyro <3 such fast response time.
