Lately my friend is having problems with his laptop. We couldn't pinpoint what's the issue. Symptoms are:
- After playing a game for about half an hour, laptop starts to freeze for 0.5-1 second randomly. Everything stops, mouse clicks does not register, screen does not change. After like 5 seconds, it happens again. It's not a continuous performance drop, but freezing once every couple of seconds (probably not related to cpu throttling).
It seems like a heat issue, CPU reaches around 87 C at max. My laptop reaches similar temperatures but it never does anything like that. Plus if that temp is a problem it should happen sooner after starting a game, it becomes freezing after 30-45 minutes.
Sometimes laptop become unresponsive without a high load, such as when surfing on internet etc. but then freezes are not that frequent. Those two facts show me that it may not be a heat issue.
My old laptop used to act similar because of a hdd issue, but it frequently complained about SMART errors. This one doesn't do that, and chkdsk doesn't find any errors.
Windows event viewer does not show anything suspicious. It's a relatively new laptop, about 1.5 years old. It has an SSHD, which may be the cause of weirdness.
Any ideas about what might be the issue?

You can check if you're getting DPC latency spikes and partially diagnose them with latencymon http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon
aside from that, hdd and/or power saving stuff on cpu/gpu/elsewhere. You already checked hdd

Checked latencymon last night and high ones are: wlan driver, acpi, nvidia driver (this one reports high in one measurement, low in other one) and sometimes usb driver. high ones are all around 3,5~~
Can DPC latency spikes be fixed by reinstalling OS/drivers, or may there be a hardware issue?

It's only really caused by software AFAIK
on the main page you can see "current measured interrupt to process patency (us):"
and highest
so you can see what it is usually, and how high any spikes are
mine is usually around ~30-40, but i have power saving settings optimized for it. Up to 100-200ish is alright for most people, but if it's spiking to 5k you'll have issues that become obvious
also i don't know if DPC latency spikes are necessarily the cause of a system freeze, or if it will just show some really high number if the system hangs for some other reason
