Keep in mind with wireless it's a bidirectional protocol. You could have the best router in the world but if your smartphone can't transmit a clear signal back then it's useless.
How do I know if my phone cannot transmit a clear signal? Can this be the case with brand new phones? I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S5.
My recommendation would be to get high gain external directional antennas (assuming you don't need coverage in the basement) - My router is in the basement (can't move it elsewhere without drilling holes) and my computer is also in the basement, plugged directly to the router. - and a router with a high sensitivity receiver (check the specs - you want at least -71 dbM at MCS7 (802.11n)) - I bought the D-Link DIR-880 (shown in my original post) due to its low cost compared to the two other choices and it seems to do the thing for me. In this case, it's an 802.11ac, so I guess this is better than 802.11n and should meet the requirements you mention? - . Positioning is also super important, even a few feet can make a big difference to signal spread. Generally though wireless is a line of sight technology, it does not work well through walls / floors. Running ethernet up to the first floor and positioning a router there would be the ideal solution. - I would need to drill a hole to bring it to the first floor.. if ever this new router doesn't do the thing, I may be forced to do just that... I can play around with the positioning in the basement. It can be directly downstairs in the living room or in my computer room which is located in a corner - .
