Just built a new gaming rig 2 weeks ago:
Pentium G3240 2 x 4GB Kingston Ripjaw Radeon 280 850W EVGA PSU (for crossfire and cpu upgrade later)
Hwmonitor shows that CPU temps are in the 30-40s with a custom CPU cooler, and GPU temps are 30s idle, and 60-75C max under load.
For the past two days I've been getting random black screens. At first I thought my GPU was overheating but that clearly isn't the case. I reconnected the DVI cable and that was ok too.
What could be the problem? How would I go about diagnosing what the problem is (I vaguely remember some GPU artifacts searching program years ago)?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: Screen goes black at the most random times, not even during gaming sessions but rather during web browsing and other very light tasks. Computer seems to be unresponsive when the screen does go black, as trying to shut down the computer via keyboard shortcuts proved to be futile. After a hard reset, screen comes back on and everything is ok again for another few hours.

EngrishTeacher,
Okay. So you've mentioned that "For the past two days". Has anything changed since then? Installed anything.. Tweaked anything..?
From something that I had to help my younger brother with this week, he had some problems with RAM where it had some leaks and was faulty. The computer would be fine for a while, then the screen would go black at random times. The fact that it happens at very random times might signify random.. memory problems. (Haha?)
PM me or let me know if I can help. I work in tech support.

Have you OC'd GPU at all? You might want to try a few different (older, even) GPU drivers
|
No Oc'ing at all currently, but the problem stopped all of a sudden just yesterday. I'm happy for it but also kinda bummed out now, because if it gets worse now rather than later I can at least exchange the part at the retail location, whereas if something goes wrong later I'd have to deal with RMA's.
If it flares up again, I'll make sure to try test the RAM (1 stick at a time? only 1 computer) and try rolling back to older AMD drivers.
Thanks anyway ekg and cyro, much appreciated.

Are you sure computer is not responsive? Sounds alot like how my monitor died.

Well yah, I used windows key + D to make sure I was at desktop, and then hit windows key + right arrow + enter and nothing happened.
I could be wrong though, if it happens again I'll try testing with multiple methods for responsiveness:D

Happened again.
I really thought it was loose connections in my box, as after I tightened the GPU 6/8 pin connectors the problem went way for more than a month.
Earlier this morning, when I was cleaning up my place and not even using the computer, the monitor went black into the no signal from DVI state. I connected my laptop and the monitor works, so I tinkered with the box for a while again to no avail.
Before I "fixed" the problem by moving wires and reconnecting parts several times, however today nothing seems to be working.
Computers boots into windows just fine as I could hear the welcome sound, keyboard shortcuts for folder navigation works as well. GPU was the only thing tested to be working in my roommates computer (different socket motherboard), so I'm really, really stumped.
TL;DR: No display, monitor and GPU both tested to be working, temperatures are all normal, boots into windows just fine.

Does the screen go black when using another monitor? Another GPU?
If yes to the first question this may be a graphics card drivers issue.
If yes to the second question this may be a blown capacitor within your monitor.

No to both, I had monitor hooked up to both laptop and desktop, and laptop works on VGA and desktop's DVI input never has signal. Same with testing GPU; works fine in my roomie's box but not in mine.
Such a frustrating problem, might finally have to bring it to a computer repair place (super expensive labor mostly).

Are you connecting the DVI input with a DVI-I or a DVI-D cable? If your monitor supports VGA, I'd assume it supports analog meaning that you'd probably need a DVI-I cable for it to work properly.
Edit: actually after reviewing the OP (I only read your recent post), I doubt that would make a difference). Only reason I mentioned it is because I had the same problem with one of my old monitors (wouldn't display anything on DVI), found out I was using the wrong type of cable.

Note: If you've had crashes during games that utilize your video card this will probably not apply to you:
Try forcing your GPU into never dropping below a certain core/mem speed. My card would only crash during video playback and since I did this it's been crash free for years. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1683316.html
The steps shown there should be somewhat similar (but you'll have to manually set those values to your card's core/mem clock, don't fuck up the 0's)
If that doesn't work. It's probably your ram which can be diagnosed with intelburntest, prime or other memory testers. Although, I don't like memory testers that only test ram as I've had bad kits that would pass that shit and still crash during normal operation. Or your motherboard in which case you are probably screwed and will need to replace it.

Does seem like a videocard issue. As I dont have other computers lying around, I usually resort to tech support at a pc shop. I had to do it recently, when my video card died. Was around 40$ for diagnosis, so cheap enough. Was more of a hassle to get my case there and fetch it back. If you can borrow a compatible video card (unlikely I guess), that could work too, but its harder to swap out and test each component separatly.
My issue at the time was similar to yours, computer would boot fine, sometimes even run games for a while. Would always end up with a black screen, then my computer would become irresponsive and I'd have to force reset.
AFAIK ram issues would give you BSOD, but I'm by no means an expert so I might be in the wrong.
If your getting specific crashes while watching streams, it might be related to Flash content video card acceleration. I know I had to disable it with my current setup. I dont know wether this issue has been resolved for more recent OS/video cards.
