Hello,
I need help picking parts for a new PC. This time I'm in the US so it should be easier to find online stores that can accommodate.
- Budget: 1,500
- Must have two monitors, never tried 120Hz, but not looking to break bank just for it
- Anything above GTX 970
- Already have Windows and a SSD
- Need to also buy a keyboard and mouse/mousepad - I used to have the Deathadder
- May stream in the future, not a focus regardless
That's really it. I can't think much of what else. I'm looking to max out GTA V, so anything that can help me there can pretty much do everything else I want. I have an Ethernet cable, so I don't need anything wireless.
Any help? I feel like I'm not giving too many specifics, but overall; I just want a powerful PC that is better than my previous:
Intel Core i7-4790K (4.00GHz, 8CPUs) 8 Gigs of RAM GTX 970 Dual Monitors: ASUS PB

Is there no GTX 980?
My fear is that I go 144hz and then at work, I get annoyed with a lower monitor. Plus I need two monitors :X
Is it possible to make it a bit cheaper/weaker; I need to fit in another monitor; a keyboard, mouse and mousepad and this is already 1700+

Sure, but for performance it's gtx 970 > 980 >> 980ti (twice as much gain between 980 and 980ti as 970 to 980). That also brings an increase in VRAM (6GB instead of 3.5 or 4GB)

Sure but you're asking for a lot of stuff better than your last system which was pretty much current gen so it's more expensive

Wait gtx970 is weaker than 980?
The CPU we can keep the same, no? And the ram is now ddr4?
I didn't reize was system was still so up to date. What else do we not need to upgrade? I couldn't run gta v all maxed on this system sadly

Your GTX 970 is still very much high-end I'd say. Unless you need every Hairworks detail in The Witcher 3, it's a good GPU :D. I second the 980 Ti as an upgrade.

Why not? cpu/gpu limits? I guess GPU but the CPU will come into play sometimes

Yes, if 970 is 100% performance then 980 is around 120% and 980ti around 165-170%

It's better to get Skylake (6'th gen) but slightly more expensive

It's cut down version of the middle of the lineup chip, it's nowhere near close enough to the flagships to call "high end" IMO. It's high end by 2013 performance metrics - as a gk110 replacement. With gm200 and Fiji on the field it's midrange though

GPU Limit mostly (3.5). It some stuttering during mid-play (singleplayer). Especially if Shadows went beyond Normal.
So why not go for the 980? Too much of a price difference for value?
I'm just surprised this 1,800. In a month I will start purchases, but will have to cut down a bit on this ideal build.

yes
GPU Limit mostly (3.5)
with VRAM issues, increasing your VRAM by 14% won't help much. 71% is another matter

I'd say get a 980ti and see how it performs. And don't be such strict on max settings, there may be some settings that don't add much visual candy but stresses the gpu way too much.

I was thinking I just go 980. Drop the CPU to a i5 equivalent and lower the ram to 8GBs instead of 16. Then I can fit another monitor on there.

If you'd go less then 980ti it's probably worth just going 970/i5.

Don't think dropping CPU would yield you any better results. I do have a friends that's running a 6600k on an insane clock, but that will require a pretty big investment for cooling (which is never a bad thing to do, since they will last forever with proper maintenance). But doing the mobo research + the actual overclocking isn't worth it for most people.
Even if you go with the 980 you're still going to run into FPS issues if you're trying to run a game like GTA on absolute max. Not sure on GTAs actual config file but make sure the Rendering distance and AA / Filtering levels are reasonable. Ported games usually suffer a lot from optimization issues.
Speaking of which, once the DX12 era is is fully embraced most of these issues should be fixed.

I should mention that the likelihood that I'll keep this PC for longer than a year is incredibly unlikely (been like that for 3 years thus far).
Does that change anything or?

Not really. I'm running a 6700k at 1.375vcore at the moment on air (without delid) and getting max temps of ~65c while encoding with 8 threads (which is notably hotter than with 4c/4t). My temp on hottest core when playing WoW (1core cpu limited) is about 37-45c.

Not much point doing that for CPU, motherboard, RAM, SSD, PSU, case etc. I just replaced a ton of stuff after ~27 months for a ~15% upgrade, that's what the CPU space is like right now.
GPU could double in performance in a year so it's worth grabbing a 6600k/6700k and keeping that but getting a lower end GPU to replace soon (like a 970 rather than 980ti) as GPU's will be like 3x faster than a 970 soon.

Best I could do. You can always up the i5 to an i7. I chose a decent mouse and keyboard, but those are always preference. There are no mousepads on pc part picker but, again, all preference anyway. Since you had a 970 in your last system, there is no reason not to have a 980ti in this one if you're looking for performance gain unless you keep your old 970 and upgrade at a later point, in which case I'd take the i7 over the i5 since there will be a little extra left over. The Cooler is also preference. Some prefer liquid coolers, I prefer good ole noctua air coolers. If you kept the 970, you could also swap out the psu for fully modular psu.
edit: I'd honestly just keep your old 970 and wait it out.

@Steelo i'm @60c 4c/4t at 1.375vcore on a cooler that's arguably weaker than the d15 so you don't have to spend big on the cooler
RAM has to be ddr4, the ~3000c15 - 3200c16 @1.35v are the best options by far unless you don't care about RAM performance at all (which is relevant for some games) - it's just not much more expensive than the ~2133-2400 @c15 1.2v sets and avoids you having to do setting volts to 1.35v, RAM OCing etc yourself which is not something that i'd recommend to anyone unless you are a RAM enthusiast
PSU i wasn't sure of but wanted to indicate getting something of decent quality
I'm not sure what's up with the PC situation, doing a whole new build yearly is quite odd

oh yea, I'm still thinking about the super hot ivy bridge/haswell days. My b. I chose ddr3 ram though because that's what was compatible with the mb

Ah wow ddr3 z170 board
I guess you could use, but it's probably better to go with ddr4 and ddr4 board (rather than ddr3l or ddr3 at 1.35v). The z170-k isn't much more expensive and is probably slightly higher end in other ways too
i'm not sure of the capabilities of boards like that (for RAM) but it's interesting for some people who already have ddr3. I already had ddr3 but then again RAM prices don't really depreciate over time very much (they go up and down, ddr3 is fairly cheap at the moment) and second hand RAM sells well (lifetime warranties etc) so i just resold my RAM for pretty much the price i paid for it to a friend (who has a 4.9ghz haswell chip to keep) and bought new ddr4 for myself

I think I'll go to 970 instead of the TI.
i5 instead of i7
I'll get a bigger monitor with 144GHz (my gaming monitor) and then a smaller one that I use for browsing/movies.
What do you guys think? What's a good gaming monitor size at 144ghz? and then a smaller 60hz monitor (1080p res/20 inches good?)
Think that'll drop the price on things significantly?

It's hz
You can generally get 24" or 27" for 144hz, though the 24" ones are a bit better. They're 1080p anyway (unless you have super high budget), so the pixel density is ok-ish on 24" and kinda bad on 27" (as it's >20% bigger without any extra pixels on it)
|
i personally believe anything above 24" is too large for 1080p, but that's just me. The Asus monitor that cyro linked is pretty godlike

You are not going to get a significant upgrade compared to your current PC, if you want to achieve your goal just upgrade your current GPU to a Titan X/980Ti, get a Gsync monitor and maybe a more powerful PSU then you are good to go.

On October 04 2015 05:43 Torte de Lini wrote: What's a gsync monitor? The monitor's refresh rate is not fixed to 60 Hz or 120 Hz etc. Instead, the refresh can be freely controlled by the graphics card and it can delay sending a frame if it wants to. Whenever a game has finished painting a new frame, the graphics card starts sending this new frame to the monitor and that's the point when the actual monitor refresh happens. The game can immediately start working on its next frame.
From the point of view of the game it looks as if there's no VSync. There's no latency from being delayed waiting on the next refresh of a 60 Hz monitor. From your point of view, things appear tear-free as if it's VSync'd. Things moving will look smooth as there won't be any jerkiness whenever a game's not managing to stay above 60 FPS on a 60 Hz screen. When the game can only do 43 or 52 or 37 fps or whatever, in that moment the monitor will run at 43 or 52 or 37 Hz etc.
|
So what's the downside? Because that sounds ideal for a main desktop and then keep a 60 hz for my side-monitor.

Mainly that Nvidia's implementation is expensive as fuck (like ololo +150 euros on monitor of the same specs) and AMD's isn't particularly good at doing the things that adaptive refresh during gaming are most important for

Bumping this up because now I am ready to buy a PC, but my budget is a hard 1,500 dollars. I added some additional details to the list.
