Current set-up:
I have a combination modem/router WiFi box that is in my basement. I have ethernet cables that run from that modem/router up through my walls to different rooms. My wired connections are great but the WiFi is bad. So, I use a repeater on the floor above the basement. The repeater helps extend the WiFi to the upstairs but it's not perfect.
I believe that WiFi works better going up-to-down so I am thinking of moving my modem/router upstairs.
Proposed set-up:
As I have a coaxial splitter, I already have a coaxial cable running to an upstairs room. I can therefore get the input to the modem/router upstairs. However, I would then need a way to connect all the wired ethernet cables to the new modem/router location.
I am wondering if I can put a switch in my basement where my modem/router is. That way, I don't need to change any cabling. The modem/router would be upstairs, I would connect it to the coaxial jack and the ethernet jack in the upstairs room. Then in the basement, I would connect the ethernet cable to the input on a switch. Then I would plug the other room's ethernet cables in the basement into the ports on the switch.
Would that work? I think I would need to use a switch rather than a hub because it would need to organize the traffic by MAC address?
Any help would be appreciated!
