I don't know! what are your thoughts?
Sounds fun. Count me in.

Awesome, got a couple responses about the tournament, so that's great. although I have no idea how to even approach starting something like this!

Have you joined the BarCraft Okanagan Facebook page? Get some discussion going on in there. I'd be happy to provide any advice I can. I'm sure grobyc would be willing to help, too.

Yup, I'd love to make an effort for some pre-IPL4 action. I've got it in mind this week, but I can't promise anything in the next couple days; I've got a really busy week at school coming up. Me and Zarkze were discussing it previously and there were a few things to keep in mind no matter what we do, so I'll leave some of these things with you guys and if you have any recommendations we'll make sure to consider them:
- As much as I'd love to spew out money for local tournaments, I'm a broke college student. We would need some kind of sponsor unless everyone wanted to play for funsies.
- PC Bang closed down, so we need a place to host it. Completely online? Another PC cafe (I don't know all of them in Kelowna, I think there's like X-zone?) ? If we do it at a PC cafe people would still need to pay for computer use on top of any kind of entry fee we may or may not need for the prize pool.
- We need enough time and ways to market the tournament to give us as much local interest as possible. Wouldn't it be amazing if we were overbooked for tournament? I know the last one at PC bang had like 10 people in it.
- Formatting - what kind of tournament format would you prefer? Single elimination? Double? etc etc
|
I wouldn't mind either an online tourney or a PC cafe, provided I could make the time to be there. It would have to be at night of course for me atleast.
As for a prize pool I suppose it would attract players but I don't really have any money to give out for something like that. THat or we do buy ins but that I think would reduce the amount of players we would get.
I could alway just make it a Diner Tournament and have prizes for 1st 2nd and 3rd or something. Like meals or something, but then again money always trumps prizes.

If this were to be a semi regular event, maybe we could spring for a trophy which the winner would keep until the next tournament. Kind of like a reigning champ type thing. Thoughts? This would be just a one time investment (assuming the winner doesn't run off with it), and something worth playing for I think.

I'm going to always try and be in channel Okanagan from now on.

Hey guys... you could try talking your local internet cafes into holding these events for free. Suggest it as an advertising opportunity/chance to bring in new customers. Here in Victoria, Stain Internet Cafe hosts these tournaments every 3 or 4 weeks and they are completely free--you do not have to pay for computer use. It brings a lot of people in.

That would be really cool! Thanks for the advice! Hopefully we can get enough hype going!

I feel like lack of initiative will be our downfall on this one...

I'm going around to talk to some places on Monday about the tournament as well as stopping by Friends to talk to them about the IPL4 barcraft during the afternoon since I have the day off. I've been really busy with work and school the past couple weeks, sorry.
Whenever and wherever it is, the tournament likely won't be before IPL4 to be completely honest. There's not enough time to advertise and organize it between now and IPL4 if we want to have it in between. The turnout will be much better if we hold on until a couple weeks after IPL4 or so, but I'm looking in to it now for then. I just don't want to get your hopes up.
I will post Monday after talking to friends pub with the details and an official announcement assuming they have no problems with us having it there again.

Hey! There happens to be at least one other Yukon-based Starcrafter here. I sent Talon a PM, and I have loads of relatives in the Okanagan (Summerland)- I might be able to come by in the late summer.
|
Sup KaYoS! who are your relatives in Summerland? I went to highschool there so i know alot of people!
|
So I'm heading out today to talk to the guys at friends pub to make sure there's no problems with having our IPL4 barcraft there again as well as going to some PC cafes to inquire about the tournament. Other than PC bang, the only other PC cafe I knew of in kelowna was X-zone. Does anyone know of any other places in the area that would be worth looking in to?
|
I was so sure it was Okinawa and wanted to enter with a "great" Karate Kid joke. Fail. :/
|
This tourney sounds like a great idea. If you guys need any help with planning let me know and I'd be more than happy to help.

Hey guys, so here's the update.
Everything is good with Friends pub, me and Zarkze went in and talked to them this afternoon. They have no problems with it whatsoever, and the place and setting will be virtually the same as last time. More information in the dedicated barcraft thread below: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=320154
As for the tournament, well there were some issues with that. PC bang closed down as we know, and after looking around some more we discovered X zone Elounge AND Droid Lan Centre have also both closed down. We weren't able to locate another PC cafe for the tournament, so as things stand now, it would just be online if we are to have one. Regardless, this wouldn't take place until after IPL4, so until we figure things out, don't get your hopes up quite yet.
