Hi all, I'm looking to organise a Barcraft in Leeds for MLG Orlando. I'm being conservative and aiming to do it just for the last day (finals) on the 16th October. I want to approach venues quite soon but before doing so would want to know roughly how many of you fine TL'ers might show up? The schedule hasn't been realeased yet for Orlando but I'm working off of past MLGs and time zones it should be 4pm - 10pm+.
EDIT - Updating OP with venue confirmation post Hey guys, just got in from scouting out venues. Carpe Diem has agreed to host us, we'll have a side section of the bar with 2 nicely sized screens. I'll have to talk to them to sort out further details (basically let them know our full expectations) but all looks good!
Attendance is also looking good as I can probably get about 8 of my mates to go, then across TL & Reddit we have 18 people that have said they would like to go with 11+ maybes (including people that have said they might know other people that want to go). We're going to print some posters and leaflets and put them out across town and then see if we can get some of the Uni societies interested as well.
I know return travel is pretty dodgy for some of you guys and unfortunately we don't have room at our place (will be boarding some of those 8). Have looked at local hotels and if you book in advance Etap hotel looks decent at £25 a night (http://www.etaphotel.com/gb/home/index.shtml). The hotel is close to centre of town (15 - 20 min walk tops) and is on our way back so we can guide you there.
Any questions, advice, tips queries or concerns, are welcome!
EDIT 2 - Confirming Venue times / arrangements "Hey all, sorry it's taken so long for me to update. My work has been seriously nuts lately and I haven't had much time to myself. In terms of how long we can stay open, Carpe Diem has a license that goes on until 1 am BUT whether they stay open depends entirely on how many of us there are / how much we're drinking. Having said this I've had interest from 70+ people so here's hoping we get at least half of that. Whilst on the subject, the room they have agreed to give us...
So basically the more people that show up, the higher the chance we get moved to projector and we can keep them open longer by having enough of us there still drinking. Personally I don't drink that much any more, however I've just bought a crate of cider from Tesco and I'm about to start training my tolerance back up =3
EDIT- Forgot to mention that if anyone needs helping getting in on the night I will have a mobile dedicated to taking calls from people who are lost/stuck etc. Also my mate who's helping me told me he had a big surprise for me, turns out he has made us both Barcraft t-shirts with his poster on them so you won't have trouble spotting us on the night haha!"
I'd think about whether I could be bothered to go from Birmingham, but to be honest I doubt outside of London it will be hard to find enough people in the UK.

You'll be within drinking age when HotS comes out I'm sure =D

We don't know until we try, would be great to have you come along =)
So far that's 5 people expressing interest here and 1 on Reddit. Would any of you that didn't know about London barcraft be tempted to go that one instead? Also if you did come along to this one, would you have any mates that you think would be up for going? If I can drag along everyone here I could potentially bring around 6 people. Ideally I'd love to have 15+ people likely to show up but we'll see ^^
Getting quite a lot of interest now (best case scenarios have 15+ people) so me and my mate will start approaching venues over next few days and get across to them how awesome Barcraft is and why they need it ^^

Actually I live near Birmingham as well. I think it's a great idea... I am interested... a bit far though and I'm not sure if I'll be able to go that day.
I would 100% attend, and likely bring a couple of non-starcraft fans along aswell to try get them into it all!
Also, we recently got together with some people on battle net by joining the "Leeds" channel, not been so active in the last few days but the first couple of days it was quite active and fun to be involved in (we had a few KOTH games and talked about a potential barcraft event). So come join the Leeds channel whenever you log onto bnet
Hey guys, we've currently got a shortlist of venues-
Sports Bar - Amazing set-up for a barcraft however high likelihood that we might clash with other event, if we can get an area of the bar though would still be cool.
Carpe Diem - They have a side section with a projector screen that would be good and drinks are decently cheap. Only issue is if they have live music scheduled in.
Uni Old Bar - Not so sure about this one, don't know whether having non-alumni is an issue or not, will look into.
Fab Cafe - Venue most likely to cater to us and they have screens setup to watch films already. Issue might be quality / size of screens.
If any body has any other suggestions would be very welcome. Me and my friend who is helping me with all this will be going round these venues tomorrow and pitching it to owner's (might just email old bar). If there are any other suggestions though, we've got plenty of time to look into those also. Cheers for all your support!
Fab Café will likely cater to it, as will pretty much any university student's union. They love that sort of stuff. Wish I could make it but I'm working. Still, if Fab in Leeds do it, I bet Fab in Manchester would too. Which would be awesome, seeing how well linked Manchester is with the rest of the country.
Looking at transport back after it finishes.. That could be a problem. The first train back is at 5am for me, could be a slight problem. I'll wait and see how things are looking.

Unless my timetable for this year gives me Monday morning's off, I'll have to take back my previous 'Definately' and pass it up this time. I'll know in a week or so, but the Taxi back to Huddersfield would be the option I'd need to take.
Excellent! I can't wait! This is going to be the perfect occasion for me to attempt to get my girlfriend into watching some SC2... she hates the idea, but won't be able to resist going for a drink!
I have an issue though, if I start at like 4pm and it ends at around 1am like normal, i dont think i will be in a state to watch SC, some good pacing will needed

At least two from me. There was a few others in the thread as well.
Oh fuck yeah time for the north to get some Barcraft love. Sign me up. I dunno if ill be able to bring anyone, my irl mates arnt into SC, any chance anyone wants to meet there so i dont look like a tit sitting on my own? Ill be coming in from manchester. EDIT: Just thought id mention that i know people who work at the Old Bar, so if theres any problems with hosting future events ill be able to talk to them about doing it. Pm me if it becomes an issue
Yeah, I'm definitely coming down for this, and I've got one more for sure thats coming with me. I'm trying to pester my other friend but that's the weekend that his lectures start at uni. We'll see

I haven't actually been to Carpe Diem, but if they have agreed to host a Barcraft, I agree, it must be AWESOME!
I really can't wait for this, the only problem is, Carpe Diem will close before the end of the games won't it? Apologies if I have missed something here

more like between 12-2am depending on how on time MLG are running.

Hopefully lostfool who has been organising it will have some info on what they said about closing times. We could always offer to all pool in so they could stay open a bit later, I wouldn't mind paying a fiver each if that would help (not sure it would). Lets just wait for a response on this from lostfool first I guess
the most important thing at any event like this is actually buying drinks, the bar will stay open til 6am if you purchase enough drinks for them to actually warrant staying open.
dont purchase enough drinks to warrant the staff wages and the cost of the bar being open and you wont be able to host another event there.
i work in a bar, thought about this idea, couldnt justify keeping it open past normal hours for 10-20 people.
also, id hazard a guess that a lot of other TL members like my self, tend not to drink alcohol all that often, get 20 people in a room who dont drink often and there is guranteed to be trouble.
maybe im just pesimistic im honestly too lazy to travel 100 miles to go to this, but the best of luck to you with it and everyone who's going

there does seem to be an unusual number of TLers who don't drink, or at least more than i seem to meet irl but there seems to be enough people and places doing barcrafts and repeat barcrafts that success is too unlikely. at least i'll be drinking as much as i usually do during MLGs if i'm there

I will be drinking plenty! Isn't that like 50% of the point anyway! A love for watching Starcraft and a love for going out and socialising over a few drinks... combine the two and that is what Barcraft is all about! I am really looking forward to this
I'm from Sheffield and would consider jumping on a train to come. The drinks for me will be fine (I'm 20) but i think my little brother would enjoy coming too considering he plays and watches Starcraft just as much as me (we're both in masters but he's better than me ffs at 13 -.-)
Will he be able to come? Maybe get some food and a non alcoholic drink or will be over 18's only?
Doubt he would be allowed Hova, i think most bars have some sort of limitations based on ages even if its like a curfew where all minors must be out of the bar past 8pm or something.

That's fair enough. I know some allow it so thought i would ask.
I'd go but i literally know nobody other than myself, my brother and my dad that plays Starcraft haha.

Don't want to barge in, but I keep on seeing people posting from Manchester. Just posting to let you know that there will be an MLG barcraft in Kyoto Lounge, Manchester as well as one for the IPL3 Finals!

Hey see the following for a map of where it is (it's in the middle of town marked by 'A', you can see the headrow running through the centre which is like the main street that cuts the centre of town in half) and the train station in the bottom-middle of the map:
Also, I'm going to guess that you might be a student, if so here's a more zoomed-out image that has the Uni in it (I've marked the Parkinson steps with a red star top left-ish of map):
If still feeling bit lost, tell me which direction you'd be coming from and I can help, also we will have a phone turned on the night that people can call if they get stuck etc
This is pretty sweet I will be there! When video games become like football I will feel like there is actually a reason for me to go to a pub. (probably surrounded by nicer people than football fans)
Has the place gurenteed that if MLG runs over, so lets say that it goes till 3am, will it stay open?
Snowy it says above that the licence is till 1am this means latest kick out will probably be a little after last orders and that's as long as the spice flows (thanks Lost for all the details). Pubs dont do lock ins any more (very sad) but we can all give them puppy dog eyes (it wont do anything but I will want a picture of it).

Hi, already tested it the other day. It's wireless and held up to streaming at least 720 stream with no issues. If there are any issues they've offering us to connect directly to modem but it isn't preferable as will probably be some health & safety stuff =p Anyways looking forward to meeting you ^^
Hello guys! I am going to be arriving around 5 o clock I think. Enjoy the first few hours and I will see you all soon. I'm coming with my girlfriend (who hates SC2!) so come say hello if you see us sat watching some games later on
What is the interest for a Barcraft in Derby for SC2 players in Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Nottingham and Leicster? If so PM me aswell for the MLG providence tournament in a month's time.
Stayed until nearly midnight and did my bit to keep the bar open. Really nice atmosphere, friendly people and excellent chips. Kudos to those who took the chilli challenge and kept a straight face...
Hey thanks so much to everyone that made it, everyone was so damn classy http://imgur.com/a/UDDpp There's some pictures from last night. Sorry that we couldn't make the finals but the bar has said they will apply for a late night license next time provided that we give them a heads up. I also want to look into improving picture quality, we had some quality loss due to having to convert digital to analogue but like I say will look into this. Will post some more when I get time but have to get back to work :o Again a big thanks to everyone, was a big success and hope to see you soon! BTW please pop into 'leeds' channel on bnet and hopefully that will bring it back into use!
Was an awesome night, good and noisy at the end! Congrats to those who set it up - I would definitely come to the next one. I had a great time (I think) too many baneling bombs for me :S
Hey everyone, I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone that showed up on Sunday! When I was originally considering a Barcraft my target was to have 15-20 people show up for a few hours. I figured it would be tough to find that many people near enough Leeds that like Starcraft, I’ve been playing Brood War for years and the only people I’d met that were interested in it were ones that I had converted. When interest started to pick-up on the TL thread, Reddit & Facebook I allowed myself to get a bit more excited and broadened the target to getting 25-30 people. However the turnout we did get was mind-blowing.
We consistently had around 40-50 people throughout the day and even until 1am many of those stayed (on a Sunday night!). The venue eventually ran out of Baneling Bombs (I think they sold around 70) and I noticed a few beer taps starting to run dry! Things were going well (despite my heart freezing every time the stream lagged) but as we approached the finals I realised that we wouldn’t have enough time to show them and I felt like I was letting people down (especially you guys who travelled so far). When it did come to closing time though people seemed very considerate and kept thanking and congratulating me and asking me about the next event. This reaffirmed to me that this was a test run and only the beginning of things.
We’re already planning on doing a follow-up Barcraft for MLG providence (20th November). The bar was very happy to host us and are very keen to host another Barcraft, I spoke to the deputy manager Kevin (you may have seen him running around the place helping meet my constant demands!) who commented on how impressed he was not only with the turnout but with how polite you all were and the passionate response to the games. He reckons that the crowd response was stronger than most football matches they show. You guys are a class act and I just want to say thank you for all the well-wishes and on how amazingly positive you were. The bar gets 10 times in the year where they can apply for a late night license (this runs until 4am), so long as we provide them enough notice they’re happy to apply for licenses for future Barcrafts. This means that for Providence we’re going the full hog =) We’re also planning on setting up a league (thanks to all those who signed up), putting on more events and of course planning more Starcraft-themed drinks!
You guys have made Barcraft a tremendous success but this is only the beginning… Shoutouts-
Huge thanks to my friend/co-organiser Rory because without his sagely advice and friendly proddings the Barcraft wouldn’t have happened in the first place.
Also please pop into channel ‘Leeds’ from time to time and I might catch you there.
Also if you’re attending Leeds Uni you might want to check out the EU Collegiate Starleague-http://www.cstarleague.com/news/1095/csleu
I sent this out as an email to people who signed up with us, if I missed someone please let me know!
I'll be keeping an eye on this possible event for the 20th of November. Got a couple of mates interested in Leeds and I'll pop up with my brother from Blackpool.
