What's a jam? A brief history Whereas they were once a method of making quirky games quickly, game jams have become an integral part of independent game development over the last few years. Simply put, a game jam is a gathering of developers, either locally and remotely, with express purpose of making games in a very short period of time. Often a jam will have an organizing theme, such as 'no health' or 'flying', in order to direct participants and to keep them from working on game before the jam begins. The ethos of a jam is experimentation rather than execution, and the game produced tend to be excellent examples of single ideas that can then be expanded upon later.
The goal of the Fallcraft Map Jam is to bring the same sense of experimentation, and the energy of making new things in a short amount of time, to the creation of competitive maps for Starcraft 2.
Organized like a short game jam, the FallCraft Map Jam will start in the morning with the revelation of a theme (islands! purple! fastest map possible!), and the theme might be as specific as ‘islands’ or as general ‘low resources’. Participants will then have 5 hours to create from scratch a competitive 1v1 map that fits with the theme of the Jam. At the end of the Jam the submitted maps will be judged by our invited pro and the captains of our two collegiate teams.
The creators of the three best maps will receive HotS Beta Keys!
And the best gift of all - the three best maps will be played during the Exhibition matches, deciding the victor of the Battle for Manhattan.
Some things to keep in mind if you’re going to be part of the Map Jam:
- RSVP HERE!
- Online participants are welcome.
- It doesn’t have to be pretty. It just has to work.
- Judges are looking at how good the map is, but also how well it fits the theme.
- Have fun and be creative!
The map jam theme is DESTRUCTIBLE ROCKS. - Be Creative - Blizzard uses destructible rocks in certain ways... what are ways to explore destructible rocks?
HOW TO SUBMIT: Email gamecenter@nyu.edu if the file is small enough; if it is too large, email to ask for a link to dropbox Publish to b.net and tell us your name!!!
CSL and NYU invite you to Think eSports -- its present, its future, and StarCraft II -- alongside our awesome lineup of panelists:
- Writer and critic Simon Ferrari
- Pro SC2 player Nick "iSAxslav" Ranish of infinity Seven gaming
- Team Liquid’s Ken ‘HotBid’ Chen
After each speaker gives a short talk, they’ll sit down for a conversation moderated by Professor Charles Pratt of the NYU Game Center. We will take questions from the live and online audience.
Home team versus a challenger from the north
The NYU and Columbia CSL teams decide, once and for all, who will be the Kings of Manhattan.
This epic battle for glory will be commentated by iSAxslav, who will then join the battle as a competitor and take on the roster of the winning team.

Damn pretty disappointed with this, thought this was the SC2 tournament hosted by NYU. Not worth 2 hour drive
|
|
i don't think you understand. mafia is worth a two hour drive.

Im a student at CCNY and i wanna play

Is Columbia on the right because look at how cooperative they are? They're picking that guy up so he can pose proudly with a levitating body.
NYU look like the cast of an Asian One Tree Hill.
|
Either this or Nightmare Night party/rave.
The prospect of mafia is really making this difficult...
|
|
|
Is there room for a caster if I can get down there from Connecticut?
Might try to get down there even if not. Haven't played Mafia since Anaheim and I'm getting withdrawal tremors.

can't wait to play some mafia!

If you really want to play a balanced game of mafia:
50 mafia, 10,000 total players, and lynch at random
50/50 chance of winning

This looks like a very cool event! Awesome, wish I could make it.

NYU is going to stomp.
|
Two Questions: Plan for food between 5PM and 7PM and/or will there be catering during the event? How long do we have the room for Mafia past 10PM?

No, it doesn't! Please come! :D
|
Ok, well does it matter that I know nothing about mapmaking? I want to participate.
|
Nope! This is meant to be fun and a time for all people who love SC to meet up in person
There will be a demo to show basic map editor functions which I suggest that you come to at 10am!
|
Updates:
- Mafia is confirmed for after-hours until 3am!
- Refreshments will be served!
- HotS beta key raffle for 10 lucky attendees!
|
omg you guys are killing me... sooo hard to pass up mafia, but I work early Sunday :/

"Anyone is welcome to the panel and exhibition matches, but please RSVP for the Map Jam HERE. Online participants are welcome!"

We can just stroll into Tisch at any reasonable time during this event?
|
I'm sadly tentative, so I'll have to retract my participation in the map jam (which was going to be silly anyway), but I'll see if I can squeeze in the main event + mafia.
|
hey guys, im a masters zerg from brooklyn new york i go to high school am i allowed to play? is this a tournament? or are the only people that get to play here the people who were invited?
|
Everyone can participate in the map making. The competition is between NYU and Columbia though.

Has to be a professor there, so we have his generosity letting us stay in the building :o

So how does online participation for the map jam work? I only got an email saying "Your RSVP has gone through and we will reserve your space for the event. Upon arrival, please check in with NYU security. Thanks again and looking forward to having you there!". What do i do now? Whats the theme? How/Where do I submit when I'm done? :D
|
Hi! The theme will be announced soon on stream and we will also put the info right at the top. You will submit to a dropbox and we'll get you the link as well in the afternoon.
Cheers!

ok, the theme destructable rocks totally makes sense considering they give away beta keys for hots...
|
Clearly blizzard was in on that decision. The CSL was advertised in-game on the front page when you log-in.. Blizz scratches their back, they scratch Blizzard's :-P

can you scratch blizzard's back in an ironic way?
|
We want you to explore the limits of destructible rocks. Maybe the answer is that they're terrible. If you think so, what do you do? Put a decorative rock in the center. Get artistic. Make a puppy rock so no one wants to destroy it.
Explore all geographies and see what you can do.

well i totally see your point, but mixing normal maps with the three 'fun theme maps' is possibly not really highlighting the creative potential and skill that is in the custom map (melee) community.
it was said on stream that the community is small, but it is not small at all imo, but kinda productive, not just very good in selling stuff to a wider audience. the way maps are distributed in sc2 is one of the reasons. btw: you do not download maps at some place in the internet, you go in sc2 and have to serahc them via melee custom or in the arcade mode.
but i wil try to come up with something.
|
Oh boy, rocks....
I have some ideas, I think we can make some actually good maps that also have rocks. gogo
|
What kind of food will be there? I'm trying to gauge what time I should stop by (as a player, not a map maker).
|
|
"Here's my idea, what do you think?"
"Wow! That looks like a really cool map! But...what if it's a Protoss?"
(after considering the fact that Protosses have cannons in PvZ destroys the fundamental idea of the map) "...... fuck Protoss. You know what, how about this: if Protoss spawns, destructible rocks all over their base. That's my map."
|
Signed up for the online part! Tomorrow is like my one day to sleep in this month, so I won't be coming down from the BX, but I will hopefully be submitting a map hastily thrown together in the morning!
|

My map was republished as "[NYU Fallcraft] White Ice" shortly before the 5pm mark, there goes nothing.
|
Map: Gemini uploaded as "omne Gemini" on NA by EatThePath aka omne
This map has a special twist on rocks: every color-coded set of rocks share HP. This means that when you kill one blue rockpile, they all are destroyed. Some rocks are defensive, some open more resources, and some open more paths. You and your opponent can affect the other side of the map by attacking rocks on your side!
-Just re-uploaded with correctly functioning rocks -Added NYU Fallcraft tag
|
Enmossed
Features 14 rocks that create choke points at various points, and that need to be destroyed to prevent harass or to take the golds/watchtowers.
Size : 144x136
|
Dustin Browder would love this theme.
|
My submission:
Patch 1.5.4
2 rocks total.

i guess you are not aware of it, but usually original map files are not shared! on sc2 you actually publish only via battlenet and normally LOCK your map so that not just anyone can open and copy your map or parts of it.
just to give you an idea, it is almost a hack like work around to open mapfiles and no map maker I know normally shares the file openly, only among fellow map making colleagues, if at all.
i do not see any reason why to publish the maps on this forum tbh. map makers who want there maps to be played can upload them on na/eu - also without permission from map makers... copy cat issue
besides that, super fun contest!
