With many new eSports folks going to be in the area, including team Evil Geniuses and ROOT Gaming who are all around now, this may be one of the best BATLLs yet! Eudemonia has also updated their computers yet again, which is great news. We will try to have a better plan for dinner this time as well I am personally putting up $500 in prize money to try and get as many of the best players in the area to come out, so any donations in order to spur more competitors and progamers to come would be awesome. Sounds awesome. I will be there.

Any talk about getting some of the ROOT guys to come since their new team house is pretty close by? That would be pretty sick.
Also I will be in attendance and look forward to competing!
|
Good news! A lot of the ROOT house will be in attendance :D Looks like this is shaping up to be quite an event hopefully ^_^
|
This'll likely call for some format changes to the event, for example changing the single elimination format to double perhaps. As well I'll be trying to get more sponsors / prize pool if possible. Will try to open up a page for donations for people who are interested

Looks like someone might be finally taking home the Bigfoot Networks Killer 2100 Gaming Card.

This is so sick. Newish esports fan from Berkeley(~1.5 yrs), always wanted to see Berkeley esports, never gone to a lan, pretty awesome that this came up. See you all there.

Sickest thing I ever heard of. Full props to Conan. :D
Pretty sure I'll be going, but not 100% confirm for now.

Awww, nicely organized. Sadly can't make it. Blackout dates suck.

Wow Suppy is quite the organizer I THINK I can make it since it's basically the Saturday after welcome week and there are no events then.
Does anyone at Cal think he could take me to the lan? I'm horrible with directions T.T

Also is there anywhere I should sign up, I'm like 99% sure I'm going to be there

Ah thanks 8mmspikes! I recognize you from the fpl group lol. Will be a long walk from CKC but if I can figure out how AC Transit works, that should cut down on time~
appwho, that's all you need to do, suppy will add you to the list.

Allright chill, thanks. Also to Aerisky, I think the 52/51b takes you super close to the event. Get off at the BOA stop in west berkeley and its like a minute walk from there.
|
This link might help a little bit, looks like both 49 and 51b would be possible ways to get there :D Can't wait to see you there! Updated the thread reflecting your attendance as well appwho ^^ Will make FB event shortly

Dang this is a pretty legit lineup. I'll probably not play, but I'll come and check this event out!
Suppy saving ESPORTS.

Sounds like fun! See you guys there! Lets do it!!!

The Root crew should bart to Berkeley (since the parking meters and parking garages are expensive for the whole event). I plan to drive and leave my car at the Bart... so if Kane and Nathanias feel up for travelling that way, I can give a lift (I live in Antioch anyway z_Z).
|
Holy smoke, so many people going to be there!! Not just esports figures, but overall, a lot of people seem to be going :D

Bryan aka TBDGwop & Joe aka TBDSeythsz will be going.
We're also driving from Sacramento and I think we can give 2 people a ride, depends on the car. I'll post again once I know.

Think we'll be adding $500 from eSports at Berkeley's club fund. Along with a donation from 8mmspikes the prize pool is getting bigger! Unfortunately we may have to put an entry fee on the tournament due to so many attendees. What do you guys think?

Unfortunately we may have to put an entry fee on the tournament due to so many attendees. What do you guys think? Doesn't the day pass at the LAN center already act as an entry fee? Having to pay more might be a bit steep :<
|
Yeah, the idea is to have it go to the prize pool (any extra over the $16 day pass) and make the player field a little smaller. That said we could probably still be fine with a large player field but we're gonna have to figure out a really nice way to do it. Especially if we reintroduce double elimination which adds a lot of time to the tournament.
Just wanna gauge what people think
|
Make sure that your goal in reducing entrants with a fee gets you to a breakpoint of powers of 2 so that it'll actually save you tournament rounds. Like right now we have confirmed 63; assuming that number is good, you would need to cut 31 players to make a difference of just one round's worth of time. Although I guess there might not be enough computers at eudo for 32 matches simultaneously so any reduction in #ofplayers would help a little on wait time. And in that case the amount you'd need to reduce #players would be below multiples of #available computers (assuming any given match takes similar time to play).
Not sure, maybe a better idea would be ladder rank to make the cut for N-player tournament? However I like the idea that BATLL is open to everyone.
|
That's a good point, perhaps we'll just try to deal with it and hope we can be efficient and finish on time. Hopefully we can reserve the whole place, should be going in sometime this week to talk to the owner.

Conan check your facebook messages!
Also what do you guys think about breaking the tournament into 2 different mini tournaments?
I was thinking something along the lines of Tournament A being for Bronze/Silver/Gold/Plat league players with a 32 player limit and tournament B being for Diamond/Masters/Grand Masters with a 32 player limit.
This way we can have 64 competitors and you don't have silly things like Gold league players facing off against Grand Masters, what's the fun in that?
I'd be willing to donate to the prize pool of the lower league tournament if enough interest is there or we could just allocate like 100 or 200 of the total prize money towards the lower league tournament. It's just an idea but I am more then happy to help organize it and get everything in motion.
Also maybe some show matches should be done just for fun. Such as 1st place from Lower league and 2nd place from higher league vs 1st place from higher league and 2nd place from lower league in a 2v2 bo3 showmatch
Just brainstorming some ideas, I'm interested in becoming an event organizer eventually and I really think CA is an amazing place to do it so anyone please feel free to email me at TBDGwop@yahoo.com or message me on here.
Again, Conan I'm in Sacramento so I'm close enough to help get this in motion. Contact me please.

I am curious now, are there many lower level players (Bronze/Silver/Gold/Plat) signed up for this? I am Gold and while i would love to get destroyed by Suppy again (Happened in the first tourney I played ) i figured i would go to watch because of all the players that could most likely kill me with their workers... lol
EDIT: Also I have been wondering if maybe Ben a.k.a. EGDeMusliM might have moved to the Bay Area in time to play this. Cuz that would be awesome :D

Regarding a lower league tournament, I think it's a really good idea. I think we may start it after the first rounds of the normal tournament have already passed (so more computers are freed up), and we can definitely do a separate prize pool for it by donations. At the very least we will likely be able to give a gear prize for the winners of the lower league tourney

Hey guys, some updates as we went into the store today to figure out some logistics.
Tournament format looks (tentatively) like this: Ro64 Bo1 group stage, each player plays other three players, top two from each group advance. 16 groups of 4. Ro32 Single Elimination Bo3 Ro16 Single Elimination Bo3 Ro8 Double Elimination Bo3 Ro4 Double Elimination Bo3 Ro8 Loser's Bracket Bo1 Ro4 Loser's Bracket Bo1 Ro2 Loser's Bracket Bo1 Winner's Final Bo3 Loser's Final Bo3 Final Bo3 (Winner gets a Bo3 advantage)
Once we reach the Ro8 of the main tournament, we can begin the diamond (or gold?) and below tournament, which will be a single elimination bo3 format.
Good news is that Eudemonia will be shutting down the store in order to make room for us. They will be making a spectator area with projector + seats as well. However, we may have to do a spectator fee to help recuperate some of the costs of them shutting down the store for us. Buying some of Eudo's snacks would also be a great way to support them for letting us use the whole store for a day!
Dinner will not be structured, we will simply have about a 1.5 hour break for people to go around and find food (lots of good restaurants nearby). Last time we all went to one restaurant and it took several hours for everyone to finish because the restaurant was overloaded.
In order to facilitate running things more smoothly and getting the brackets generated efficiently (it often took as super long to get the brackets up and delayed the tournament significantly), we will do a 10-11 AM check-in time and try to generate brackets by 11:30 with seeded groups.
Final thing is that although $16 pays for the all-day pass, it will not guarantee a computer for your use the whole day. We will be running MLG style for the beginning of the tournament, meaning there will be 8 stations of 4 computers for the first 8 groups to finish, then after the groups finish the next 8 groups will rotate in (so make sure you remember your SC settings!) and finish their groups. For Ro32, all competitors will move to a station again to get a computer, and so on for Ro16 and onwards. From the start of Ro16 there will begin to be open computers until the diamond and below tournament begins. So consider the $16 as simply an entrance fee, and as the night goes on you will be able to nab your own computer for the rest of the time.
Let me know if you guys have any issues with anything here and we'll try to fix it or come up with a better solution!

Hey guys, got a little bit of bad news. Unfortunately, due to an extremely short notice change of plans I will have to be filling in for someone at the Kingston HyperX booth at PAX Prime for EG this weekend and will no longer to be able to attend BATLL. It really really sucks, I've missed one BATLL before and it was something I said I would never do again, but I have an obligation to go help out my team because of all the support they've been able to give me. This BATLL has been the BATLL I have been most excited for ever and I really feel like I'm letting a lot of people down by not being able to attend.
That said, I hope you guys can understand and forgive me - the event will still be going on! We've had a really hardworking team who have been working on this event for the past few months and we're all hoping that this event will be a huge success so we can continue doing them in the future. A lot of unfortunate circumstances have led to many names no longer being able to attend, but with almost all of ROOT still attending and the amazing Bay Area SC2 community I am confident that the event will still be a huge success
I promise that we will do this event again in the next 3 or 4 months for all those people who are disappointed that they won't be able to meet much of the EG team (Incontrol, Huk, Demuslim, myself) to make up for this! But in the meanwhile please continue and have fun and really enjoy yourselves at this next BATLL!
In good news, it looks like a diamond (or plat) and below tournament will be run at BATLL once the Ro16 or Ro8 begins for the main tournament, with a gear prize of perhaps some Kingston HyperX RAM, headset, and other of those goodies listed in the OP. We're hoping that everyone can participate and have a good time and a chance to win some of these giveaways!
So for everyone going on Saturday, I wish for you all to HAVE A BLAST!

I"m still sure it weill be an excellent event!

Hey All,
I just sent out a PM to those who are going. If you're just reading this now, keep the following in mind!
Check In Check-in is from 10:30am-11:00am. Running a 64 player tournament in one day can be a crunch! We need players signed in on time so we can create the brackets and begin the tournament right away.
Fee Player fee is $16 at the door. Spectator fee is $5 at the door, there will be a spectator seating area with a projector and the casters doing a live cast. Should be awesome!
Side note: there will be a lower-level tournament running after the first few rounds of the main tournament. If you, or someone you know, is cautious about playing in the main tournament (or if you get knocked out), feel free to join in that one! There will be gear prizes!
Venue and Parking The venue is Eudemonia , and they have been super supportive and helpful getting this going. They are located at 2154 University Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704. Keep in mind that the Bay Bridge is closed this weekend, and you'll need to use BART if you are coming from the city. Also keep in mind that all day parking can be a bit of a hassle in Berkeley. Click on the link in the last sentence and come prepared.
Rides There are several players available to give rides, check out the OP and PM as needed.
If you have any questions you can PM me!

Thanks to all the sponsors: the Collegiate Starleague, Barcraft Apparel and Kingston HyperX, for the support and swag to give away! The tournament would not have been possible without them
Thank you to Adam Harrison, Alan Yao, Nour "PrOmise" Moussa, Ian O'Conner, Daniel Tompos, CJ Scudato, and the Eudemonia staff for all the hard work you put into the event, it was one of the smoothest events we've ran thus far (even if it still went past midnight ) And finally a big thank you to the man who made it all possible: Conan "Suppy" Liu, your passion and enthusiasm for eSports is what made these past eleven BATLLs happen and we all missed you very much at this event. See you all next BATLL!
