Club Quarters Round of 8 Week One Recap Round of 8 Week Two Preview
We know two of the four Club Day MSL semifinalists. Both are Protoss, but surprise, none are Stork. Two PvT quarterfinal matches remain, and there's a very real chance for a snore-inducing all-Protoss semifinals. So far this week, I've watched Jangbi pass MSL quarters, Stork win the OSL finals, CJ lose to Samsung in Proleague, and now, the best hope for a non-PvP semis is FireBatHero. I will now slowly stick my hand in an electrical socket.
Before we get to the games and previews, I'd like to add my thoughts on what happened in the OSL Finals:
Stork Delivers Game five of the Stork-Fantasy Incruit OSL Final put the single greatest amount of pressure on one player (Stork) in the history of progaming. It wasn't just the deciding game of the finals, but also the seminal moment in Stork's career. Legends and losers are forged in such moments, and to his credit, Stork passed with flying colors. He played solid and safe in a game that easily could have swung the other way, especially since Fantasy had the momentum after his brilliant dropship build on plasma. Stork 100% deserved to win. Yes, I just wrote that. No, this doesn't make me a Stork fan, just someone who can recognize great play. SKT1 fans dry your salty red tears and look on the bright side. Yes, Stork beat Bisu Best and Fantasy, but at least now you have a villain to cheer against.
Also, apparently Stork's teammates read my jinx thread, because they brought out the celebratory champagne bottles before game five was even over.
It's the night before the OSL Finals, Stork sits at his computer, practicing. He hears voices down the hall, getting closer. His teammates burst into the room.
FireBatHero: (holding two bottles of champagne) Hey Stork what kind of victory champagne do you want?
Ever)P(TT: (dancing and smoking a victory cigar) FBH taught me this dance called TT Sambo!
Jangbi: (with a toolbelt) I modeled your Golden Mouse holder after the MSL trophy case I built myself.
Frozean: (videotaping with a camcorder) I'm getting footage of you for next season's intro.
Odin: (wearing Stork OSL Champ T-shirt) Wassup guys! I suck in Proleague!
Goojila'd
OSL Finals Schedule 3-2 Stork
Congratulations Kal, you luckboxed into the MSL semis because Stork prioritized the OSL Final over a Ro8 PvP series with you. Kal played very well, but if this was Quarterfinal D, his estimated chances would be... none percent. Stork beat Best, and Kal is not as good as Best. This season illustrates why it's so difficult to win more than one individual league at the same time. It's just impossibly hard to practice for two different matchups on different maps while still maintaining Proleague responsibilities. In fact, given the ever-shrinking skill gap between upper tier pros, it's quite an accomplishment just to qualify for both leagues. Only Bisu and Stork were able to do it this season, and both were fortunate to make it to the Round of 8. Bisu needed a tiebreak to get out of his nightmare OSL group, and Stork facing a combined zero Zerg opponents throughout both leagues. You have to be one of the top two players in the world to win an OSL or MSL, but to win both, you have to be incredibly lucky as well.
Game One @ Athena 2 + Show Spoiler [Show Summary] + Stork traded his first zealot and scouting probe for only one probe kill. Kal opened three gate goon, a build that automatically dies to DT. Fortunately for Kal, Stork went two gate expand and also foolishly lost a dragoon early on: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_11.jpg) Kal attacked with superior dragoon numbers and excellent focus fire: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_12.jpg) In this next screenshot, the colors look similar, so for your benefit, I've put a bright red circle around each of Stork's defending dragoons: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_13.jpg) This game was a build order win by Kal. It's tough to screw up 3 gate vs 2 gate, especially when your opponent wastes a critical unit or two early game. Kal 1-0 Stork
Game Two @ Destination + Show Spoiler [Show Summary] + Kal went one gate nexus after scouting only one gate in Stork's base. However, Stork proxied three gates on the left side of the map, and razed Kal's nexus: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_21.jpg) Kal was able to hold his ramp, and the next battle came a full twelve minutes later, with both players maxed: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_22.jpg) See that storm in the middle of the screenshot? That was a group of Kal's zealots melting before doing any damage. As a result, Stork rolled over Kal's army with plenty of units left over. ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_23.jpg) Kal typed out soon after. How the game ended up as a 200 vs 200 battle after Stork secured such an advantage early game was beyond me. Kal was ahead on tech, but not by much. Stork 1-1 Kal
Game Three @ Medusa + Show Spoiler [Show Summary] + Kal opened two gate DT and Stork went two gate robo. Stork's probe attempted to push itself through the temple into Kal's base, but failed twice and was unable to see the citadel. While two gate robo normally should have an obs out in time to stop two gate DT, Stork had built several zealots and also researched range before making his robo. Thus, Kal's first DT had a timing window: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_31.jpg) The DT swiped nine probes, and Kal used this advantage to secure an extra base. While Stork killed Kal's backdoor mineral base with a DT drop, this delayed Stork's high templars and storm research, allowing Kal to attack: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_32.jpg) Kal did not take down the nexus but succeeded in trading armies. With a large economy advantage, Kal ended it a few minutes later when Stork moved out to the center of the map: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_33.jpg) I don't understand why Stork switched to reavers late game despite having an archives already. But I doubt it mattered, because at that point Kal was already too far ahead. Kal 2-1 Stork
Game Four @ Byzantium 2 + Show Spoiler [Show Summary] + Kal opened 14 nexus with cannons. While this build may work on practice partners and low level Big Game Hunters players, it had a none percent chance of success against a top PvP player. Stork saw the cannons, proxied a robo, and eventually pushed in with reavers: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_41.jpg) ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_42.jpg) ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_43.jpg) Kal had less units, slower tech, and no eco advantage due to the dozen cannons he had to build. It kind of makes you wonder how many times this build worked back in the STX house and who Kal practiced with. Stork 2-2 Kal
Game Five @ Athena 2 + Show Spoiler [Show Summary] + Both players opted for a very safe robo before second gate. The critical battle occurred both players had seven goons, two zealots, and one reaver each: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_51.jpg) As you can see, Stork's attacking units were badly positioned and took massive amounts of splash damage from Kal's reaver. Also, Stork's reaver came in at a bad angle and could not fire as many shots. His army weakened, Stork was forced to keep all his units at his natural choke to stop Kal from containing him at his ramp. Kal faked an attack while his his reaver flew into Stork's main, causing a late probe flee-transfer. As a result, Kal was able to fire off a few successful scarabs: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_52.jpg) After returning home to get a second reaver, Kal crushed Stork's army in the middle of the map: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Kal_Stork_53.jpg) Kal advanced to the semifinals. Stork seemed disappointed but distant, his thoughts clearly dwelling on an OSL Final that was just 48 hours away. Kal 3-2 Stork
SparkyZvP Fails Hard
JangBi 3-0 YellOw[ArnC]
OGN's Terrans are very good against Zerg, and their Zergs are very good against Terran. This isn't surprising, as their Terrans practice with their Zergs. However, OGN only has two Protosses who have seen action in Proleague this season: Chalrenge (1-5) and Spear (1-1). When your best P is Spear, how do you practice for a ZvP quarterfinal?
Yarnc: Thanks for practicing with me Spear, I can't believe my two hatch muta rush worked fifteen straight times on you! Spear: Jangbi won't know what hit him!!
Last week, I predicted Yarnc would win this series. It turns out that I forgot to edit that section, so here is what I meant to write:
So, easy pick right? On paper, Jangbi should wipe the floor with Yarnc. A smart, logical person who is untainted by bias would predict a 3-0 Jangbi win without thinking twice. I, however, am not that person. I cannot explain or support why I think Yarnc will win, but there comes a time in a man's life when he must go with his instincts. I believe Yarnc's ZvP has a breakthrough in this series.
My predictions are so accurate!
As I watched this series, I was amazed at how stubborn Yarnc was with his mutas. He always sticks with them too long. I know his muta control is good, but when the P attacks with six corsairs and two archons, no amount of strafing is going to save him.
On the whole, this series was three very painful games littered with cheese builds, bad decisions, and futile all-ins from Yarnc.
Game One @ Destination + Show Spoiler [Show Summary] + Jangbi opened Sair-DT while Yarnc went four base mutas into lurkers. Jangbi successfully snuck a DT into Yarnc's main. Yarnc saw this but eventually forgot the DT was there. ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Jangbi_Yarnc_11.jpg) Nine drone kills later, Jangbi was significantly ahead. Yarnc's mutas melted from the corsairs and archons, and a minute or so later, Jangbi's first standard ground army obliterated Yarnc's hydra lurker force: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Jangbi_Yarnc_12.jpg) Note the 0-0 upgrades on Yarnc's units. Soon after, Jangbi ran over Yarnc's third gas: Jangbi 1-0 Yarnc
Game Two @ Byzantium 2 + Show Spoiler [Show Summary] + Yarnc five pooled. Jangbi scouted the lings and abandoned his front forge to put up a cannon near his nexus. Even though the two players were at cross positions, the cannon was only halfway warped when the lings arrived. However, Jangbi sent two probes to Yarnc's base and not only killed a drone but also made Yarnc look away from his lings in Jangbi's main: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Jangbi_Yarnc_21.jpg) Even losing his lings, Yarnc was very ahead. He had three hatches and good saturation while Jangbi was on one base and only had one gate. Yarnc used speedlings to shut down Jangbi's first attempt to retake his nat, but then suicided two groups of lings into zealots, probes, and one cannon: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Jangbi_Yarnc_23.jpg) Yarnc's five pool and his unwillingness to play for late game demonstrated his lack of confidence in his ZvP. Instead of building his lead by taking bases and playing defensively, Yarnc tried to go for the kill. Then he let Jangbi sneak a DT into his main despite scouting the archives, which killed five drones, razed his spawning pool, and halted mining. A few minutes later, Yarnc's muta harass did not do enough damage, and Jangbi attack-moved into Yarnc's natural with three archons and a group of zealots. ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Jangbi_Yarnc_24.jpg) Yarnc's bad planning, decisions, execution led to an embarrassing defeat. Jangbi 2-0 Yarnc
Game Three @ Medusa + Show Spoiler [Show Summary] + Yarnc opened overpool gas, but as soon as he killed the scouting probe, went lair and resumed gas mining. Jangbi seemed fooled initially, making three cannons at his choke and blocking with probes in anticipation of a speedling runby. However, Jangbi would soon sense that something was wrong when there were no speedlings containing his probe scout. At this point it was obvious to everyone, including Jangbi, that Yarnc was not going to play straight up. Some type of cheese was coming, and Jangbi added a stargate and cannons at his main and front to prepare for both mutas and hydras. Yarnc's mutas did get some kills, but he skimped heavily on drones. Yarnc needed to kill a nexus but Jangbi's corsairs and cannons didn't let him. ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Jangbi_Yarnc_31.jpg) Jangbi progressed to reaver tech, and traded his shuttle, reaver, and two zealots four eight or nine drones: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Jangbi_Yarnc_32.jpg) At this point, everything Yarnc did was a few minutes behind in timing. His upgrades were late, his third base was late, and his hydra switch was late. When Yarnc moved out with hydras, a control group of Jangbi's sairs flew in and killed all his overlords: ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Hot_Bid/MSLRo8W2/Jangbi_Yarnc_33.jpg) Yarnc's twelve hydras saw two reavers and four cannons at Jangbi's choke, and Yarnc conceded shortly after, with three minimally saturated bases and a Protoss opponent with double his supply. Jangbi 3-0 Yarnc
Round of 8 Week Two Preview
firebathero vs Bisu + Show Spoiler [Show Stats] + Player / Matchup / Last 10 / Last 3 Months / Head-to-Head firebathero / TvP / 9-1 / 6-1 / 2-2 Bisu / PvT / 4-6 / 5-7 / 2-2
FireBatHero has only lost once in his last ten PvTs. Just a few weeks ago he was terrible at it, and now he's a TvP beast. FBH plays a style that is effective and entertaining, mixing in dropships and aggressive two factory builds . Bisu on the other hand does not have the pretty stats, but seemed stronger than ever in his 2-0 victory over Hwasin. In the MSL Round of 32, FBH used dropship harass to beat Bisu in a long macro game on Byzantium 2. However, in this best of five, I believe Bisu has the advantage because Medusa (8-4 PvT) is the map played twice. Destination, Athena 2, and Byzantium 2 are all statistically balanced PvT. Also, I do not think FBH will be able to surprise Bisu with dropship play this time around. Neither has the practice time edge, as both players have recently played in Proleague in non-PvT/TvP matchups. This will be a close and exciting series, as these two have the most momentum out of any of the Round of 8 players. I expect the winner of this match to advance to the finals. Prediction: Bisu > FBH, 3-2.
HUK?? Does anyone else think it'd be awesome if Bisu showed up to the match in his white surgeon mask, got on stage, and with slow, intense, overly dramatic motions, removed the mask while pointing menacingly at FBH?
free vs NaDa + Show Spoiler [Show Stats] + Player / Matchup / Last 10 / Last 3 Months / Head-to-Head free / PvT / 6-4 / 5-1 / 1-0 NaDa / TvP / 4-6 / 2-1 / 0-1
Both Free and Nada are playing much better than their PvT/TvP records indicate. Free is 7-2 in Proleague and is carrying perennial loser Woongjin Stars to a surprising 4-4 record. Nada only has one loss in the last two months, but it was against Free in their MSL Round of 32 group. The game was on Athena 2 and Free won easily. A series, however, is a different animal, and Nada is dangerous as ever. Nada will do risky, tricky things like his goliath break against Frozean. He will also make smart, experienced, veteran decisions. But Nada cannot overpower Free. The series hinges on one question: which Free will show up? The confident, streaking Protoss who is 13-3 overall in the past two months, or the nervous wreck who lost to two Airforce ACE Terrans? Free could win this series 3-0 or lose 0-3 and I would not be surprised either way. However, watching Free's behavior after winning yet another Ace match for Woongjin, it seemed as though he has turned the corner. No longer encumbered by sponsor or salary issues, Free is, well, free. He is finally able to focus on practicing with no external worries. When Free plays well, he has a Best or Bisu level potential. If Free shows up to play, there's nothing that Nada can do. Free > Nada, 3-1.
HUK?? Did you guys see Free's post-match PL celebration where he pulled his shirt and pointed at the WOongjin logo? He sure is proud. This prompted me to look up what Woongjin actually does. It turns out their company's principal activity is manufacturing and selling water filtration devices, air purifiers, and other bathroom and kitchen appliances. No wonder all the Stars are happy, they have the best toilets, ovens, and cleaning appliances in all of Korea.
Next Week Recap of the FBH-Bisu and Free-Nada matches, and preview of the two semifinal matches. Two things fill me with dread: (1) that one of our finalists must be Jangbi or Kal, and (2) we could very well see an all-Samsung finals. Can the MSL just disqualify everyone and make Bisu-FBH the true Finals?
See you next week!Last edit: 2008-11-04 14:10:50 |

Eh... I think Kal would have a shot at beating Stork even without the OSL finals looming for Stork. Although a fast expand with cannons as defense? He must have been thinking "Hey, I have a one game lead, why not do something screwy, it just might work!"
Because seriously... >_> |
