I go to college in Taiwan and therefore in my American Literature class (a joke), I get called on to read lots of times. Turns out I find out today I don't know how to say postumous (I don't even know how to spell it, rofl). I remember when I was younger I would always say anonymous
a - nony - mous, so I was wondering if there were any "nuklear" words that you guys had trouble with.

Basically, I want to embarass my roommates with tonguetwisting words

Ans of course polysyllablic words are generally hard for me as well. And words with stacking(?) syallables. A wholely unrealistic example: This example is a extra excessive exploitary exaggeration.

most taiwanese would find words that has "TH" in the begining hard.
we're just not used to biting our tongues like that, but that probably wont give ur roomates enough headaches tho, as they'll simply pronouce it with the S sound.

No western language is a problem if you speak polish first. Main problem for most people here is "r" (we got really hard "r" while in english it's soft "r"). I also heared that people from France have problems learning english since they can't pronounce "h" (I hope I remember what I heared )

it really comes down to how you're used to pronouncing things.

Do u have the same problem with:
fit and feet?
sit and seat?
hit and heat?
bit and beat?
or it and eat?

No, I think not. Not that's much of a problem, but since someone brought it up, I tried to pronounce "sheet" and "shit" and noticed that there's no difference in how I would pronounce them, provided I don't make long "eee" on purpose. However, I feel distinct difference for the pairs you've provided.

The difference between shit and sheet is not the duration of the "eee", its just that the "i" is pronunced with a very very slight e sound, so the tone is not as high as you would say in sheet.

Beacuse well you can still say biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch and it wouldnt sound like beach

Hold your tongue and say "i was born in a hospital" (horse piddle) / "i was born in a pirate ship" (pile of shit)

Ppl i know from Spain have a difficulties when saying a word that starts with s-consonant.
Like the name Spain itself. The always include an "ae" before. "ae-spain" instead of spain, "ae-stick", "ae-stupid", and so on.

And some koreans still have trouble with "f" and tend to "simplify" the vowels. Even tho, nowdays most of them can pronounce the "f"(i remember with nostalgia when i got asked if i would prefer a coke or an orange "hwanta"

But then again i found english speaking ppl funny when trying to speak korean, spanish or french.

But let me say something: french girl trying to speak english is extremely sexy

thats obvious, be cause spain in spain its España, and the "E" doenst have sound of "ee", but "ae" (like you said)
stupid in spain = estupido (at least it is in portuguese)

than its obvious that when they are going to say 'spain' they want to say 'Espain'

The problem is beyond that. Im givng a spanish kid english lessons and seems impossible to him to pronounce just spain. He needs to inlude that prefix. Is like japs that need to include a vowel after a consonant. It takes a lot of time to correct that.

In its spanish it is wrong to speak pronouncing the s very hard.

If you want to say 'us' (nosotros) they tend to say when they are kids NosotroSS and pronounce the s very hard. you should not pronounce like a snake but in spanish when you are little thats what most do. Maybe its that. They are not used to pronouncing Spain cause for us they S would sound very hard.

Maybe not english but here is one of my favorite words (german):
Landwirtschaftsproduktionsgenossenschaft
Umm.. maybe "farmars' collaboration" in english (a nice feature of the former socialism )
Only 3 letters in hungarian

And hungarian also has a "hard r" and no "th"... That is why the hungarian accent is said to be funny And english words with "r" and "th" are hard to pronounce at first. "soft r" becomes "hard r", "th" becomes "d" or "s"... You get it.

that's actually correct. in the dictionary it says pronouncing it either way is acceptable, and almost everyone I know in the US including myself says it like febuary.

Can anyone explain what they mean by hard r? I only speak english and I have never heard that term before. I don't see how an r can be more hard than it is in english. do you mean that thing where you roll your tongue like in spanish?

Something about their language I think. For example I know that (I think) 3 is pronounced like "Tsam" whereas it would be written in English as "Tam"

Id agree that almost any word with a hard "RA" (r) sound in them are hard for most asians to pronounce.

I worked in a thai restaurant for 9 months and my name was still unpronouncable to the entire kitchen staff (all thai).

My name is Cyra BTW. They called me cy-cy or cy-la after they had all given up.

I know that we are currently disscusing English. But Polish is full of immpossbile to pronounce words. It is a real horror for any non slavic outlander. And for slavic people simply hard to pronounce. English is realy easy in comparison to polish, thank god that you dont have to learn our language.PPP

Talk about Hungarian as a foreign language (the grammar usually simply freaks out everyone)
Like: "prepositions" go to the end of the word
You can change word order any way you want, but getting ever different meaning phrases
A whole lot of stupid-looking letters áéúóüöíűő (the last two are the most problematic, not every browser handles them correctly even after the iso and ascii standards have been set)

Pronounciation is quite easy, given you know how to "produce" the correct vowel/consonant (especially "r" ), as every single letter has to be pronounced (like you were spelling a word in English).

[Edit: yeah this site is also incompatible with those two letters I mentioned ]

Hunarian is probably the last foreign language anyone would learn, along with Finnish.

I have a personal interest tho, but I bet there's not a single Hungarian university course in the country.

Hungarian and Finnish are indeed alike... same basic make-up I guess.

But Finnish looks cool, so cool I'd like to learn it. But then again, I suck at learning a languages so maybe it's not worth the effort

Although nobody would want to learn dutch either, I guess. Dutch is, according to myself, one of the most illogical languages that exist, you'd be surprised how many Dutch make mistakes in their own language

No western language is a problem if you speak polish first. Main problem for most people here is "r" (we got really hard "r" while in english it's soft "r"). I also heared that people from France have problems learning english since they can't pronounce "h" (I hope I remember what I heared )

You should hear a my boss speaking. He's Scottish, and he has the strongest RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I've ever heard. By the way, we also have that sound in Catalan, but it's still funny. Fonetically, I think it's an r with a slash over it.

Chinese people always call the name of the dish they're serving to the table. For spanish-speakers, check this: "PRATO DE ALOZ" (when it should be "plato de arroz"). It's demonstrated that they can pronounce the r and the l. I've been told that they have the same symbol to this sound, and that's why they tend to misplace the sound, but I don't know it for sure. Can a chinese confirm or disconfirm this, please?

Try "du schrumpfst!"
Also funny is hearing french people trying to pronounce my last name, "Höche". *g* They don't say the "h", they tend to cut off the end "e", they dunno how to pronounce an "ö" and they have only the "ch" left!

Well these aren't terribly obscure, but I still think they'll mess over someone who is just learning English:

often
daquiri
rural (or even integral)
coup de etat / de grace (but that's probably cheating)
auxiliary
equilibrium

For me, I had been pronouncing "horrible," "iron," and "vapid" incorrectly for years before someone told me what was up.

In japan the letter "L" do not exist, thats why they pronunce "R" instead of "L".

Oh and there cant be a consonant without a vocal next to it (except TSU), so they use the "U" (a very soft U) between consonats for example DOG they say DOGU.

All my vietnamese friends couldn't say the words math, bath, etc.. Was really funny because they would try so hard to pronounce them correctly. In contrast, I must look like a fool to italians when I converse with them. Hard words to pronounciate from the top of my head: George, and Bush.
