A very controversial thing about playing Starcraft is whether or not, listen to music from outside of SC. Here's what I think. Yes, listening to music outside of StarCraft is Extremely helpful. Basically what I do is listen to music that has an Upbeat tempo, and a good rhythm/beat so my fingers can get into the rhythm and the beat.

First off, choosing your music is a must. Some people say they work better on rock, hip hop or trance. Whatever the case, create a playlist of that type of music, and just listen to it on shuffle. Now, there is the problem of choosing the best out of the best. What I suggest you do is go to http://www.pandora.com and create a station with YOUR type of music by typing in the artist name (make it your current favorite), or by typing in a song name. Pandora will then create a radio station for you. Then you should take that radio station after listening to it for a while and download all the songs you like. This process of finally creating the best station for you is a bit time consuming as in listen to it as you create the station and mark up and down the songs you like and don't like.

+ Show Spoiler +

Finally when your station has completed the process of when you mark up the songs as good or bad, listen to it some more until you can download all the songs you want from that station and compile them into a playlist the size of around 25? SHUFFLE THEM! SO U DON'T GET ANNOYED!

The next step in music for the better play.
Listen to music outside of your Starcraft Playing. I listen to classical music i.e. Mozart. Heck, Mozart makes babies smart right? Who says that still doesn't work? I listen to Mozart when I sleep and when i wake up I get this really good feeling to play Starcraft with a good idea of strategy because the music from Mozart makes me feel rhythmic. I also would probably suggest Mozart because the music just makes you think in a kind of blissfully graceful way in which clears your mind.

Good Luck to you all in finding the music just for you!

Don't forget to update the list when you start feeling a bit bored.

I'd actually prefer a placebo effect, instead of say, nothing. I mean actual nothing, the kind of nothing that doesn't even fool me into thinking anything.

I think music has a detrimental effect towards playing starcraft. When you have music in the background, it distracts your attention from the game. You can't think as clearly about the situation you're in because you're giving part of your focus to the background music. Having music on makes me play like a robot.

"We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative."

Pandora works only inside USA . What about music, It sometimes helps when you listen to it quietly and hear all the starcraft sounds at the same time (dt, wraith attacking, ... is under attack). I prefer hearing 1 song 3 mins length for the early game, when sounds aren't really that important and you don't have to take care of 8 bases and 200 units in the middle of the map.

This. Furthermore, especially as a lower-ranked player, it's EXTREMELY important to be able to hear "Spawn more Overlords" or "Your forces are under attack" than it is to listen to music, unless you just really don't give a shit, then crank it up.

When I play and listen music same time, I usually just forget music because I am focusing so much on the game. I am that kind of person that, while listening music I'm focusing on hearing when, how and what each instrument plays and things like that. So music while playing sc doesn't affect me too much. Expect when I hear some really good song, I froze and start focusing on just listening it. (this have happened me while playing)

Another thing is to play without any sound and music at all. When playing like this you'll focus more on minimap and vision. I've tried it and it worked but, it does have clear cons like not hearing dts raping your drones etc. (heard this from Ahzz's fpvods so thanks to him)

Some people do better with music, some don't. The ratio might not be 50/50, but any claim that states a 100/0 ratio will definitely be wrong.

you guys saying that music doesnt affect you in any way:
it's just not true. agressive music makes your driving more agressive. and just a couple of months ago a english research institute found that sportsmen and women listening to the right kind music before/during a big event perform better.

they actually tried this with a swedish swimmer, and she broke her personal best.

music isnt everything, but saying that it doesnt affect you at all is just ignorant!

Really? You're posting this in the strat section? You genuinely think the music you listen to has enough of an effect on your play that you can have a strategic discussion on the matter?

I don't understand the obsession with finding things that have absolutely NOTHING to do with Starcraft and then somehow grasp at some incredibly far fetched link as to how it makes you play better. It doesn't matter if you have music on or not, you're still bad. If you want to get better stop focusing on stupid shit like this and actually practice. This is on par with threads like "how to hold your mouse" and "which keyboard makes me play better". Stop looking for completely irrelevant things that you delude yourself into thinking makes you better at the game. If you want to improve, PRACTICE.

Well, it's certainly a worthy question. Personally I sometimes play with music (usually psytrance d&b) that's fastpaced to keep me from slowing down during the game, but I sometimes prefer playing without music at all. I think a cross-section of foreign-pros answering that question would be interesting to see if they listen to music and if the type determines anything for them.

Well there have been studies as to the effects of background music on learning. Mostly classical music, rock and stuff doesn't really help much. Classical music on the background seems to improve memory and relaxation.

And then there have been some studies that just listening to rhythmic sounds, like a "drum train" or even just people talking in the background for some seconds, can help power up the brain.

But well, I imagine that if you're not a very thoughtful player, being on pins and needles with your hard loud music can probably improve your mechanics.

Don't listen on the haters, listening to background music is as acceptable as making sure your room is well ventilated, you have the right equipment that makes you feel comfortable, etc.

Well sometimes these tiny things can greatly help people. For example, Jaedong turns off the music when he's playing, because that's his preference. Other's chew gum (I believe BackHo used to) to keep a beat or rhythm. The keyboard you choose also can affect your play, for example, a huge keyboard with keys the size of crackers is going to make it difficult to perform keyboard tasks like 5sz6sz7sz8sz9sz right? It's called the Scientific Method, and has been around for 100 years.

However I do agree practice is the best method for improvement, and focusing on these things will stunt improvement. What the OP is discussing is for people that find Starcraft's music extremely distracting, and can not ignore it, no matter how hard they try.

When I game 99% of the time I'm listening to death metal. It kicks all other music in the face and the testicles at the same time. Energetic music definitely increases my APM and energy. If you're relying on sound for "build more pylons" and "you're under attack" you're doing something wrong. Know when to play supplies and watch your minimap more. I used to be unable to play without ingame sound but I don't even need it anymore because I'm more aware.
