Hello, friends.
You may remember me from my ridiculously awesome blogs and powerful moderating skills. Alas, seeing as how TL staff is only paid in eSPORTS Dollars and seeing as how eSPORTS Dollars are basically pieces of toilet paper with smiley faces scribbled on them by Kennigit, with no real value outside of his childlike imagination, I do stuff outside of these forums, too. In fact, I am currently completing a Master's Degree in Communication Sciences. To obtain this degree, I am required to write a Master's Thesis, which I'm working on right now. My thesis is about gamers' attitudes towards in-game advertising. The use of advertising in games has become more widespread in recent years, but very few academic studies have been conducted in this area thus far. This is where YOU come in!
The point of my research is to perform an online survey to see how you, dwellers of the mighty Internet, feel about in-game advertising. I'm aiming for a rather large sample size, so I would really, really appreciate it if you lovely guys and gals could take 5-10 minutes out of your no doubt incredibly busy days to answer my list of questions. Everyone who completes the survey has a shot at winning a $30 Amazon.com gift certificate, so you can finally get that book or DVD or whatever you've always dreamed of! Also, because TL is my most favoritest site in the whole wide world, I'll throw in a fresh new blog as well, just like that.
Seriously, amigos, I cannot stress this enough - you'd be doing me an awesome favor by filling out this survey. Getting tired of me begging? Then follow the link below, first read the instructions carefully and answer the questions! Fly, my pretties!

Also, I'm going to be linking this survey on a few other forums and I'm still very much open to suggestions as to which forums I should pick. Do you happen to visit any forums that would let me post my survey and generate some responses? Please be sure to post about them in this thread!
Also also, I will be bumping this thread relentlessly and with zero sense of shame or dignity. I will be as persistent as AIDS. You cannot ignore AIDS.
Thanks in advance!Last edit: 2009-10-29 01:23:09 |

| I'm gonna go ahead and do it right now as in-game advertisement is something i've though about quite a bit since it kinda ruined CS for me at one point. |

| Finished. Looking at my answers again though, might as well as say that if ad costs will lower retail price, anything goes. |

Finished the survey, was a shame there wasn't an option to elaborate on some of your choices. Personally, I don't like advertising in games all that much, especially when it's obtrusive as it can sometimes be. A billboard in a racing game, or a logo branded onto player gear in a sports game is fine with me. It actually has some justification for being there, and as long as it isn't too far in your face, I don't really have a problem with it. When an ad appears in an RPG or something, just for the sake of bringing in revenue, I think it ruins the immersion a bit.
I wouldn't pay too much more for a game if it came free of advertising, unless the advertising was extremely obtrusive, and essentially required you to spend a significant amount of time looking at an ad. And in that case, I'd probably just find another game, unless it was something special.
I would however play a game that had more advertising (once again, as long as it isn't too obtrusive), if it came with a cheaper price tag. |

Made up brand? I need examples of both made and non-made up because I have no idea how to answer this 1
a real energy drink would be red bull (actually exists) a made up energy drink would be bear semen (does not actually exist unless day9 makes it happen)Last edit: 2009-10-29 01:43:27 |

| there isn't any, revenue wise for Bear Semen Ltd. because it doesn't exist. usually you'd see fake ads in ... like GTA games on billboards because.. well there's billboards in real life and they have ads, and GTA is supposed to be a simulation of real life, so it kind of helps the immersion? i guess? i dunno |

If I said it was Bear Semen made by Apple, even though it is a fake product, it still helps in brand recognition.
In something like anime, for example, they like to avoid blatant using products from a certain company, but to aid people's recognition of what the subject is, they can have something that says SONV, or AVIO, etc. It doesn't necessarily have to be a specific product being advertised, the image of the brand is just as important.Last edit: 2009-10-29 01:47:39 |

| Very Very short survey. Also, not very detailed. But I guess this survey is only a small part of the thesis |
