But a recent forum to discuss proposed legislation against racial discrimination turned into a shouting match when several critics who had networked through the Internet showed up. They charged that such a law would only encourage even more migrant workers to come to South Korea, pushing native workers out of jobs and creating crime-infested slums. They also said it was too difficult to define what was racially or culturally offensive.
“Our ethnic homogeneity is a blessing,” said one of the critics, Lee Sung-bok, a bricklayer who said his job was threatened by migrant workers. “If they keep flooding in, who can guarantee our country won’t be torn apart by ethnic war as in Sri Lanka?”

| Sounds like America at the turn of the century. It's not ethnic minorities that create crime-infested slums, it's the whole social climate. Such exclusionary thinking will help to create such a climate. |

i think that this sort of racism and xenophobia are the main reasons why a country like china or korea will never become a world leader like the US is. Nobody will want to immigrate to those countries when they treat immigrants so poorly. A nations attitude like this will not change for a long time. They will always consider immigrants as immigrants where as in the US it doesn't matter what you look like, you can be as american as anyone else.
This is why i'd support the US/north america over most other countries because that principle is great. The unity of their nationalism is based on support of an ideology, not on stupid things like similarity of appearance or other bullshit like that. |

There is a dark side of Korea.
I was going to continue with "that no one knows about". But I think most people familiar with the country, are aware of its racism and other problems, at least on the surface.
If you want to learn more about them, there is a variety of high profile blogs about Korean society.
They range from one-sided to little more balanced and from blunt to more in-depth.
But they're journals written by people who've lived in Korea, so their first-hand experiences should count for something.
I'll link two types of blogs. I think they both have legitimate foundations, despite the fact that all blogs are biased to some degree:

I was gonna reply on ghermination's BS generalization (seriously, all of asia, is you crazi you know how big that is?) but himurakenshin takes the fucking cake on boneheaded comment.
US, seriously? Are you 12, cus you certainly sound naive like 12. US has had race/gender problems for 2+ centuries, not until the early 1970s did it start to get better. Subtle racism is still rife even in metropolitan areas like LA.

I think it has more to do with the delicate cultural guidelines that countries like SK or Japan are built on, as opposed to hating all outsiders.
I mean, I've been to Japan and I could totally understand how they get a negative view of foreigners.
