I recently asked some questions about the Sensor Tower and got a response from Cydra:

Source: Questions regarding the Radar/Sensor Tower.

1. Is the proper name Radar Tower or Sensor Tower?
Sensor Tower

2. What model is being used: Radar Tower, Sensor Tower, or a completely new one?
Sensor Tower has a passive Radar ability which expose enemy movements within its radar capacity.

3. What are the stats? (mineral cost, gas cost, build time, HP, armor)
It costs 125 mineral and 100 geyser gas and it takes 25 build time. Sensor Tower has 200 hp and 0 default armor. You can upgrade the armor of buildings by 2 at Engineering Bay.

4. What is the range of the radar?
*not answered*

5. Do cloaked and burrowed units appear as blips within the radar's range?
No. Cloaked and burrowed units don't appear.

6. If yes for #5, will a unit be able to see cloaked and burrowed units that are within its visual range as well as the radar's range?
*not answered* (But by extension of #5's answer, it's an obvious no.)

7. Does the Tower have any other special abilities besides its radar function?
No.

8. Is the Tower salvageable?
Yes. you can salvage it for 100% fund.

9. Is there anything else you can tell us about the Tower that I've missed?
*not answered*
I'm curious about what you guys think about this building and its functions. Along with the info provided up there, take note of a few more things:
— the little zone of detection it had is said to be gone
— the range is said to be about 20
— its position is revealed to the enemy

Do you see much use of this building?

Can be early warning against drops/air harass...... ONLY IF ITS INFO SHOWS UP ON MINIMAP

otherwise, pretty useless since 20 range isn't that great for a static building that is both kinda expensive and vulnerable, making it ineffective in ground battles.

It seems like a Xel'naga tower... except that terrans can build them. I never saw a huge use of the towers anyways, both Sensor and Xel'naga

You can upgrade the armor of buildings? At the engineering bay? What?
I won't kill you...But I don't have to save you

Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing. If it's range were something like 30 or 40 and it had a bit more meat on its bones I think it would have some potential.

Yep. It upgrades the armor of all Terran buildings by +2. That's one of the reasons that that PF in BR4 survived the Protoss onslaught — that and reinforcements, its own firepower, and the mass repairing SCVs.

100 gas for something that doesn't detect and doesn't really give vision, just little an indication that some unit is out there. Seems terrible.

If you can't see stuff the radar info on the minimap (enemies in the fog), I'd have to say it'd be just simply useless.

  Krikkitone   United States. November 07 2009 01:49. Posts 304Profile
Agreed, no info on the minimap is useless.

But if there is, then it might be very useful... although only 20 Range and 125 minerals 100 gas might not work be balanced.

If it is still required to give detection to Missile Turrets than it is needed, but that hurts Terrans rather significantly.

I'd say with the current cost, the Range should probably be ~30, or keep it at 20 and cut the cost to 75 minerals 50 gas

Now that I think about it, someone needs to tell blizzard that:

YOU CAN BUILD A FRIGGEN RAX AND FLY IT INTO THE ENEMY FOR SCOUTING, AND IT SHOWS EVERYTHING, IS PRETTY FAST, COSTS NO GAS AND IS SUPER TOUGH. And It'd reveal more of the enemy line as this thing would at by, say 6+6 radius by flying over enemy formations. At 1.5k hp it is not going down early game and by late game, there are enough units to line the map to make sneaking impossible anyways. (though with expensive scans it might help in peeking behind tank lines...but that is very, very niche)

If they want to keep it as is, they need to drop it to 50/0 or something.

Can you attack units on high ground if they are seen by the sensor tower? If so, it'd be helpful for fighting your way up a ramp with a slow push, or when defending your expansions against cliff drops. The same can be done with comsat or floating buildings however, much cheaper even. If at least it was a detector...
What? The land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy.

They should make this an upgrade of missile turrets imo. Then it would have defensive function and it could give you additional info at key chokes that you might need more range at.

It wasn't a Q&A session. He just posted on the blizzard starcraft II forum boards, and happened to get a response from a CM.

Ohh and my option: useless. I'd rather use a rax or Ebay.

Can tanks shoot at the blips that are out of sight range? If so, you could put one opposite minerals next to your command center of your camp and use it to spot for nearly all your tanks, which would just fire blinding at whatever is approaching.

Edit: Also can it see up hill?

I'm kind of confused about what utility blizzard sees in this building.

Especially because those things are 1) mobile 2) have more hp 3) don't use 100 gas.
Oh, 4) screw with enemy unit auto-target.

125 mins and 100 gas for a turret with no sensor or anti air, unless it's got a huge range i'm calling useless.
