OK, so has anyone else seen the trailers for this new Sherlock Holmes movie adaptation? Honestly, I have no idea what to think. It basically looks like someone read the stories, decided that they would rather be directing James Bond films, but they couldn't get the rights from the Flemming family, so they had to use Holmes b/c it's in the public domain. Anyway, when did Holmes become an action hero? I thought he was just a smart guy who solved some mysteries and did some cocaine when things got too boring. Actually, maybe that's what's happening in this movie. The whole thing is Holmes's delusions while on the 6% solution of cocaine. Any ideas from the masses?

Well, not a superhero in the traditional sense, probably not anything "super" about him... just a regular hero... but Hollywood has run out of superheroes to do... and Sherlock Holmes is like the idol of every little boy who spent lots of time learning obscure facts hoping that one day he'd be able to cash in on it and solve some huge mystery.
Into the fray my friends, may our feet be swift, our hands be sure, and our necks keep a firm grasp on our heads.

then why not make a movie about a mystery, show holmes discovering the clues, and arriving at wild and crazy conclusions via his famous inductive reasoning. then having the conclusions be correct in an awesome expository climax. this movie looks pretty lame .

There's plenty of action in the books, and a lot of mention on his kickass fighting techniques and king kong strength. And holmes isn't supposed to be a junkie, not in the level of house at least.
Though there's no romance, especially from Holmes part, I really hope there's no love story or some shit, yet I guess its hopeless with hollywood, look at what they did with the departed
I'd probably prefer a more... er, sober modern adaptation on Sherlock Holmes, but certainly some novelty is a good thing. This take doesn't necessarily go against the spirit of the books. If anything, it might add back elements that definitely were present in the books but have gone absent in the late 20th century popular image of Sherlock Holmes. It's been a really long time since I read the books, though.
I can't say that the trailer impressed me a lot. I'll probably go see it if it gets decent reviews.
heh

it actually sticks to the stories quite well from what i've heard from people within the sherlockian community, my dads very involved with all this stuff, in some ways it makes me feel like he's nerdier then i am. anyways ive heard that in fact its actually quite credible and sticks to the character that Doyle originally made. for example, Sherlock Holmes actually was a boxer, which surprised me when i found this out.

Sherlock Holmes stories actually contains a bit more action than what you'd think. Holmes wasn't only a boxer, but he was a fencer and a top notch marksman as well. I think it'll be very interesting to see Hollywood's verison, and I'm such a Holmes fanboy I'll probably watch anything.

If you're a true Holmes fanboy, my guess is that you'll both watch it AND hate it

This movie looks good, plus I love Guy Ritchie movies. Though I've only read Hound of the Baskervilles, a quick look at wikipedia shows that this movie seems pretty in-line with Sherlock Holmes.

Judging from that trailer, how can you suggest with a straight face that this movie is 'in the spirit of the books'? All the usual unrealistic action scenes à la Hollywood I can take, I can even live with Holmes having an affair, but Holmes' depiction in that trailer is so far away from his character in the books it's ridiculous.
Holmes is an extremely neurotic guy, living in his own world, his own head. His character just doesn't lend itself to a Hollywood blockbuster, he's not the cool hero dude and in trying to make him so it looks like Hollywood has managed to drag another great story down to mediocrity.

I love the Sherlock Holmes stories, especially The Valley of Fear, saw this trailer the other day and just everything about it seemed off, there was this distinct stanical element that just seemed illogical to a Sherlock mystery, unless it is shown to be completely false with no mystical element whatsoever. Also the whole personality of Holmes seemed altered, he seemed as the first post guy said, like a wise cracking smarmy James Bond style character.

Yeah, I guess I forgot about Holmes' brooding neurosis, which is weird because I watched The Great Mouse Detective just last week. I was speaking more in terms of "Holmes doesn't fight/box/shoot people", though yes in this one he seems to be more of a cross between James Bond and Robert Downey Jr.
This isn't Sherlock Holmes at all . Robert Downey Jr doesn't fit, and Holmes would never wake up naked and chained to a bed with a big grin on his face.. and although he's good at fighting, he's supposed to rely on reasoning and disguises. The only part of the trailer that I liked was the hammer scene which made me smile a bit. I wish they just picked a random name for the detective and called the movie that instead of ruining a perfectly good character.
