[Q] MSL 3rd place

Just a quick question :

I noticed there doesn't seem to be 3rd place MSLs placing when else OSLs does. Is there any particular significance in this?
Retired Brood War player / WCG SG Top 8 for 2002, 2003, 2004, retired, then made minor comeback to Top 8 at 2008. 2009 = bleh xD

MSL isn't as important so they don't feel they need a third place while OSL is fairly important. I think.

KPGA use to have third place, but for some reason MSL never did. Then again, OSL has essentially dropped third place as well, presumably because of a lack of interest. Likely the reason MSL never bothered when it officially became the MSL.

Lack of interest I would guess... they really should bring it back though. These days a 3rd place in an MSL is nothing to sneeze at.

Neither of them have a third place anymore. OSL used to seed its top 3 finishers, wheres MSL would just seed the top 8. This is at least the way its been since I got into professional broodwar (about 3 years).

What? MSL *tries* to be just as important as the OSL. And succeeds on a lot of levels at being an equal contender. I believe they are operated from rival companies (MBC vs OGN). So this definitely isn't a reason.

what? Misinformation running rampant =[

Okay, so the MSL used to have a double elim system - and in those cases the MSL had a third place (the loser of the loser bracket final). The top 4 finishers were always seeded iirc.
e.g. Uzoo MSL, YATGK MSL etc

Then after the double elim system MSL moved to a single elim system (sometime around pringles iirc) and they decided that they would seed the top 4 as they did last time - which meant that the two semifinalists who lost would get seeded in. Seeing no need to differentiate them, they didn't have a 3rd place match. When they changed their format again (oh, about arena MSL?) to seed the top 8, there was still no reason to have a 3rd/4th match.

Now in the OSL, up until recently (i think bacchus 08) they had a third place match to determine who would get the 3rd seed. The 4th seed was decided through a tournament of the OSC 2-0 winners and the loser of the 3rd/4th match. Hence there was importance for that match - hence why they had 3rd place finishers.

Nowadays, theres no need for a 3rd/4th since the top 4 are seeded so like the MSL theres no need to have a 3rd/4th
