Immediately before the launch of beta, a Starcraft website Starcraft Wire.net / INCGamers Starcraft hosted a contest on the Battle.net forums. It was a competition to see who could come up with the funniest caption for a Dustin Browder picture. A winner was chosen but was NOT given a beta key.
A concerned contest entree went undercover to discover the truth, disguising himself as Gold League Celebrity SC2 Player, Husky.
Unfortunately I forgot about posting this when it was a little more relevant (I was busy playing the beta and it slipped my mind), but to the two or three contest winners that were brushed aside, I want you to be able to see the truth.
A website that holds contests and does NOT give out the keys.
The original Battle.net contest thread isn't available on the forums (deleted) or on archive sites yet, however here is the Teamliquid thread discussing the contest.

I hope everyone reads this and realizes that SCwire/incgamers isn't to be trusted.

Eh, it's pretty lame, but Husky has multiple keys as far as I know. Sucks that they didn't keep their end of the bargain, but even if Husky didn't have a key, I would just avoid the site at worst.

That site was never very reputable, passed itself as a crappy site that took any piece of random information that anyone emailed to them. Wasn't that the site where people would make fake rumours and then post them to the site, knowing that it would do no real fact checking and just post it. Not too mention that Sydarm guy seemed like a giant douchebag, I saw him spamming random forums constantly with random drivel and fake *scoops*. Seemed like your average youtube comment poster basically.
- EDIT - lol at the detective work going undercover, nice work Sherlock

Aww, goddammit, I went and fetched 2 gross of pitchforks and torches too... I hope there are some Quakers I can sell this stuff to
|
Sydarm is also the one who stalked Dustin Browder on facebook, made him add him and then flooded his facebook page with questions like "WHEN IS BETA COMING, I NEED TO GET THE SCOOP FOR MY SITE SCWIRE"..
It caused DB to delete his FB page (or least put it on extra private) and he made a comment how he was dissapointed with how much the fans were bothering them too much about beta.
He also bashed the SCL mods, saying they knew nothing, then when the SCL mod (Gifted) took down all his "hints" towards the beta, Sydarm started bugging him about it almost weekly.
Not to mention on the SC2 forums, SCL and I think here (before he was banned?) He would say "Beta comes this friday, I know it, I got an insider".. every week in January. It never did happen.

Sure, I'll take it off your hands.

Husky has 1 key, (people lent him their accounts till he got his own) but this wasn't him. Someone disguised themselves as him to get a response since hes well known.
Pretty disappointed in this. I'm sure Blizz wont have them as one of the reputable fansites though.

no TL does not stand alone
TL, SCL, and SC2F.org are probably the 3 best sites, if there's ever BS the mods come out like a swarm of zerg looking for blood
|
Guys, it was retarded of them to back out on giving me the key.
But I don't know whats more retarded, that or people pretending to be me -_-;;
I was lucky enough to get a key through an alternate source and website. It was already proven they are garbage but would really appreciate not having my name stuck to something like this.
+ Show Spoiler +Especially since I'm Plat, not Gold T_____T

I thought it was already pretty well figured out that this contest was a hoax? I mean who really has faith in a 2 hour contest?

No, he was right the first time.
I'm not going to badmouth other sites, well, perhaps I already did, but TL will exist long past these other 'news' sites long stop updating and most of their members stop posting. Always seems to be something of an inferiority complex from the other sites regarding TL, always bad-mouthing it as a place for elitists or whatever, but most of it probably stems from jealousy.
Legacy has some issues, and SC2F has that joneagle guy, who from seeing some of his posts on TL and his epic meltdown, mini-rant a while back has tarnished any credibility his site ever had.
Stick to TL, its really the only site that matters.

Most popular games have an elitist community that thinks themselves better than the plebeians, TL most certainly is not alone.

This, but TL is that elitist community when it comes to everything StarCraft!

I remember this contest and if the person was pretending to be Husky, he definitely didn't do it because he was "concerned".
His post was basically said, "I'm Husky and I'll use the key to show thousands of people the game so I should get it" and it worked =P
