I recently have really noticed just how much more clean and mature overall these forums are in comparison to basically every other SC forum, but most certainly compared to the Blizzard forums. One fine example of what I mean. Retrospectively it truly seems pretty obvious, but I really felt compelled to make known my appreciation for these boards. That's not to say that there are never any one line posts or any useless questions that could be answered with a simple Google search here, but they are certainly discouraged and I would say most topics here are fairly well thought through. The mods and staff have really done a fine job here. Kudos to TL and all it's users.

Its common knowledge that its not a friendly place, mods can close threads and ban you for simple things. Not that these things happened to me, its something I observed.. Its better than battle.net and many threads need a lock but mods are just a bit too strict.. It only takes one mod to close and ban you, and some of them enjoy it and take it too far.

Mods enjoy banning idiots and that should be the case, the main reason TL has better quality than the bnet forums etc. is because of the strict moderation. Its not like the name of the site or anything naturally attracts more intelligent posters, the reason for the good quality is the fact that those who can't follow the rules are warned or if its a serious break of the rules like racism etc. they're banned.
I can't remember ever seeing anyone being banned from TL.net who did not blatantly break the rules or was bad mannered. My first and so far only temp ban so far was because I called someone a fucking idiot and I know I deserved it.
It's a friendly forum as long as you are friendly yourself.

But the point is that its more of a dictatorship than democracy.. I remember there was a big friendly discussion about broodlords but now its in closed and poster with ~20000 posts banned.. Many mods saw until one mod comes and says "wtf is this??? there shall be no discussion about anything without a scientific thesis published in at least 3 magazines".. And a few days earlier there was a whine TvP post that was open because poster played in some tournaments or is a friend with some mods..yeah democracy..
And there are general questions about the game that gets closed and banned and mods say "Why dont you check that in game yourself?".. Yeah assholes because you and your friends have a key that blizz gave you as a fan site doesn't mean everybody has it.. I dont care about such topics but imagine yourself as a guy watching some sc2 stream seeing something intriguing, googling sc2 and coming here and asking a normal question and you get brushed off.. That doesnt look elitist to you?
|
No, because we want to maintain quality forum discussion and don't want everyone and their mother making 1 line threads. It's only elitist if you look at it badly... I've never had a thread closed, warning, or ban in 3500 posts.
|
and no, tl doesn't claim to be objective. Better players and better posters get better treatment because they contribute.

^ oh man double posting... Your gonna get banned for life.. The reason Im saying this is because I was on a small forum that talks about a lot of games.. Its a small friendly forum with no trolls or bs or 50% topic closing rate and one normal user posted a topic to post your screenshots from some game and said something like "if you can..post it like attach or link for people with slow internet".. And I take a screenshot from a game and resize it so its like 50kb and embed it and I get a mod warning saying "next time read the rules noob".. Its a screenshot thread in year 2009 with avatars of bigger size and it wasnt a rule and its a friendly site.. So I unleash a shitstorm of rage and I see my post was reverted but Im never visiting that site again..

I think if you actually look at the threads we close, they are closed for a very good reason. I close a ton of SC2 threads because they are garbage. I've banned maybe 2-3 people for posting crap topics in SC2 - mostly for breaking the guidelines. Usually threads are closed if the question has been answered, or if it is someone just trying to assert their opinion because they think that's how the game should be.
^ oh man double posting... Your gonna get banned for life.. Pokebunny isn't going to be banned for double posting, hell, I've quadruple posted before I was staff. If you are integrated into our community then you'll find that this is a really friendly place and the friendships made here transcend the website. We are a community, and just like a real life community, we hate douchebags who make the community worse. However, unlike real life, we can do something about it here and simply remove them - making the resulting community better for everyone.
Quality attracts quality. So when you only have quality users left then you know that the forum is going to be quality.

I like it how it is / dont care much because Im a bit elitist about my games too, but Im just saying from a neutral pov..

why did they get banned? because they are crappy posters.
they are also the ones who complain about mods being too strict and taking it too far.
Hmm.......

the thread wasn't any more "friendly" than any other QQimba thread and that's charliemurphy who has a history here but still will post garbage threads just for the shit of it. probably the best case of high post counts =/= good poster
here's another one of his fantastic thread
trozz would be a good example of the reciprocate of that. under 400 posts, but everyone loves him.

Okay, I'll try responding multiple times in one post this time. Editing posts from an iPod touch is a pain, so I didn't bother, so now I'm doing it this way. I don't even understand this post, so not gonna respond to it other than the first line.

Plexa is right. We aren't closing your threads because we don't like you. We aren't closing your threads because we want to be elitist. We are closing your threads because they lower the quality of the site. (When I say we, I mean TL, not implying that I'm a mod =p. I just started using we cause plexa was using it, therefore got caught up :<).
The complaint of "elitism" seems to stem from people wishing they were held to the same standards as veterans. In America, people are held to the law equally, as in many other countries. TL is not America. TL is a website. If you contribute to our site, you can afford to make more mistakes. That's just how it works. If you had 10000 posts and were permabanned when your little brother went on your computer and spammed porn and advertisements, this site would suck. No one wants to see the good posters leave, so they're treated better.

Pokebunny is right
Moderation here is not strict at all you just have to avoid being a dumbass/troll for most of your posting history. Of course you can't escape those at even some pts for instance, charlie murphys gets temp banned occasionally also and he's been around :p But yeah tl is very elitist but that's with many sites that are around. The mods can't be perfect you know :p although ur best bet at tl would to be korean cause all u needa do is translate articles and everyone loves you .

Being loveable and adorable helps too.
And I'm a bit confused....are you praising or criticizing TL?

Not really, to be honest. The solution to not getting banned for being an idiot is simple - don't be an idiot. And TeamLiquid is one of the fairest, safest online communities on the internet. I've been in communities (a few Gunbound communities back in like 03-04 spring to mind) where entire groups of quality posters were banned because they were all in a clan and their leader did something to piss off the owner of the site. Can you imagine what would happen if a mod here tried that?
What you need to understand is, mods are not the wonderful, infallible deities - they are human, and like all humans, they make mistakes. They get in bad moods and ban people for minor infractions that normally wouldn't warrant a ban. It's not the end of the world, and to hold them to perfect standards is just silly.
As far as the "whine TvP post", well, they give preferential treatment and more leeway to people who contribute to the site for that exact reason - they contribute, people like having them around, and having to force them to go for some really really slight infraction would be sad. This is a subjective online community, and whining about it is going to change nothing. Instead of whining about it, why don't you try contributing? Emulate the people you see here who everyone likes, add to the site in a meaningful way, and who knows? Maybe you will be one of them someday. I know I hope to be

To be honest, the learning curve to posting on TL is moderately steep. It takes some time to browse around, see what's acceptable, what's not acceptable. I do believe that if you got a random new user to register on TL for the first time today and he made a thread, it'd be almost certainly closed. The one thing I do feel about TL is that at times the colored staff and others with sick icons and stuff can be intimidating. I remember when I first lurked here, I didn't wanna post cause I just thought every post of mine would get ridiculed by that grim reaper guy.
However as I've gotten accustomed to TL, it's become second nature now. What I can do, what I can't do. While the staff and mods here might come off as intimidating, they're fair people. If your thread was closed, it's probably cause it sucked. Sometimes you might feel differently than they do, but I think they give everyone an equal chance.
Once you climb up the ladder and have proven yourself as a contributor to the community, you'll get more leniency and freedom.

You answered your own question: Another older broodlord post popped up: That was before the new rules were made, and there were other topics like that at the time.
