This is wonderful news!
To all the doomsayers, why are you so scared of change?
Do you think GOMtv will just take this great opportunity and piss it down the drain?
The whole scene will adapt, and something new and amazing will be the result.
There will be some hardships at the earliest but I have great faith that everything will turn out just fine.

More tasteless, woohoo!

[edit]

(To some of the guys earlier in the thread) If you have a problem paying for world class e-sports, then maybe you shouldn't have an opinion to begin with. And lets not forget, GOMtv had free viewing and the option to pay more for a HD stream. I don't think they will change this.

Haha can't believe some of you actually believe this. There was just a huge final in a fucking aircraft hanger with thousands of people there, but you'd like to go back to a tiny studio with nobody watching and Tasteless making incorrect calls on the games.

Its lucky GomTV is owned by CJ and there's a good chance the current structure can be retained, otherwise forget it. Blizzard doesn't have a clue and doesn't care about eSports, we can just look at bnet 2.0 to see their complete lack of any help for competitive play. KeSPA running the only truely successful and mainstream leagues in the world and people are happy to throw it away and let Blizzard try and do it themselves? Some of you really need to think about it more.

Companies want to make money.

Surprise!

I never liked GomTV's idea to broadcast WoW tournaments (really the only thing I hated when Blizzard and the original GomTV thing). Now if it were DotA tournaments, that would be a really pretty neat. DotA is semi-interesting to watch despite how fast paced the action can get between 10 different players at the same time.
It takes an idiot to do cool things.

I think if you bought the game you should be allowed to do whatever you wnat with it, what will people think if Hasbro started to forbid clubs to play Scrabble?

I'm really starting to hate Blizzard.

No I think you need to think about it more. The fans are the ones that make it popular not kespa, fans will just switch to w/e service they need to get there fix. Sports coverage all over the world changes like this every year I don't see this been any different. If gom have the kinda money to pay blizzard for the these rights, there not going to do it on the fly with no idea where to go from now.

I am not sure if any one has mentioned this before in this thread, but has anyone thought of the implications of this on general copyright legislation issues?

If I were to liken Starcraft to a tool for creating content. Then this is like Sony charging me to put photos I have taken using its camera on Facebook. Does not anyone just find that illogical?

Although no matter how much I detest the actions of KeSPA and wants to see an opportunity for something better to replace it, but I do not want to see Blizzard setting such a dangerous precedent.

If I was an alarmist politician, I would be saying the next thing you know Blizzard would be charging you whenever you go off to a friend's house to watch him play Starcraft.

Well it doesn't work like that does it

I can't start a movie theater and show movies that I've bought for $10 at the local store.

That would be absolutely retarded and like in the example Blizzard has full rights to limit people showing their game on TV and that's how it should be.

You can't compare it to a camera. Its an IP not a physical media.

They wouldn't need it if they wanted to close iccup they could in a heart beat...

Not really. The servers are located in Russia. They could ignore DMCAs.
Oracle comes in, Scvs go down, never a miscommunication.

Actually I read some time ago, that Canon had in its User Agreements, that their cameras are only for private use! So they "could" sue someone, that is using their cameras for his/her job or earn money from it!
(maybe I got some points wrong, but the general idea...)

So your thoughts are quite real!
There can only be one Geisterkarle

Im understand football but watching it on tv sucks without commentary. People will be alot more into watching it with commentary in a language they understand,

Maybe I should increase my bullshit line to two lines, like you just did.
Anyway- Compare it to watching football, I understand what's going on, I have eyes and the knowledge to figure out what is going on and what is going to happen. But it wouldn't be the same without having that guy who gives his professional opinion, can give random trivia and also be very involved in the game and has the power to get your adrenaline flowing. The most important part of any sport. Fuck yeah commentators.

So if I were to use any software to create a website for example, I need to pay rights fees to the software creator on top of the initial licence fee?

It is not physical does not mean it is not a 'tool'. If I were to buy a tool for the purpose it is intended for, I do not expect to be charged any extra when I use it for that purpose.

Edit: typo

Read Boonbags post cause you obvious don't understand how it works and have not thought about it at all yourself. Its not like other sports its a niche, and if you try and do this you just alienated all the sponsors which make it happen. Maybe some of you will be happy watching amateurs play in a crappy studio with bad commentators but i wouldn't bother with it.

The most fucked up part is involved BW in this. Think about the worst possible scenario, that BW cannot be broadcasted (i think its unlikely it'll come to still but possible). They literally just fucked over all the players who have practiced all day for years, think about all the kids just getting into proteams now who are future prospects. All because Blizzard decided they need to interfere for some reason with the current successful scene. If they just left it alone to evolve naturally it'd work better, for one thing they are already assuming there is even enough of an audience to broadcast to BEFORE the game is even released.

Seems to me like Blizzard got backed into a corner, and did the only thing they could do. How it all turns out remains to be seen.

Blizzard have a a lot of prestige riding on this now. So I am sure they will try their best. Just hope it will be enough.
