Only heard of this recently , friend recommended it to me. Thought it'd be some lame ass anime but it was definitely one of the best movies ive seen.

I'd recommend every Miyazaki's movie.
My Neighbor Totoro (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096283/) is incredibly good.
Sweetest japanese way of thinking.

Trick or Treat is another good film for this list.

I think the tag of Horror puts a lot of people off. But it takes a more RL Stine, Goosebumps, Tim Burton approach to horror. Your typical horror fan may not enjoy this one. I would perhaps go as far as saying it's black comedy. It's not as childish or fantasy as RL Stine or Tim Burton, but it has their take on Horror.

It's light hearted, charming and aneasy film to watch about a town celebrating Halloween. It follows the story of 4 or so separate people whose Halloween story somewhat interconnects. I think it does a very good job of capturing the spirit of Halloween.

I think a lot of people would enjoy this film. Maybe not right now, but closer to Halloween.

Seconding The Fall - amazing film

Also, 12 Angry Men - old rather than unknown, but oh so good.

Restraint - Surprisingly good for an indy kiwi movie

Defendor - Recent film, haven't seen it hyped at all but v. good.

L'interieur, Frontiers, Martyrs - French horror, much better than that Nightmare on Elm Street crap.

will try to think of more. Love this topic but don't recommend fkn Gladiotor as "hidden gem". wth.

edit: Also seconding Ink (looks/feels like 90ies tv series but v. good acting etc) and would like to add

Chocolate to the Ong Bak recommendation - must-see if you're into Martial Arts films.

edit2: Yeah Funny Games is pretty sick, don't let the trailer fool you.

edit: My Sister's Keeper - Better than expected, very moving. Don't think this is well known.

Hey guys, I'm really not contributing, because I don't know the titles !
I saw them both on TV but only just after the beginning, so I didn't quite catch it.
If anyone knows the titles of these films, please do PM me.

The first one is a futuristic French movie. Some prisoners are on a spaceship, controlled by officials. Whenever things get out of hand, they would use some sleeping gas to put everyone down.
There was this 'Jesus' guy who healed people by taking all the evil within him. At one point the spaceship was heading towards a star and they tried to stop it. Then the 'Jesus' guy went into outer space, stood before the star in a crucifix manner and with like 3 minutes of him just shooting his power onto the star (the only lame part of the movie) he turned the burning planet into an Earth like planet with green and water. (I didn't see the beginning of the movie, but to my reasoning, it was like a story how the Earth came to be). I really liked the mood and lighting of the movie and I'd like to see the full film. It has some similarities to the movie Cube.

The second one is a Korean movie. It's about an ex-police officer who goes into the business of selling girls for sex. Three of his girls are lost and he goes to search for them. He doesn't know that they're taken by some impotent bastard who kills them with a chisel and a hammer and then buries them in his garden. The third girl who survived the first murder attempt somehow has a daughter (something like 8 years old). The main-character-ex-police-officer-dude didn't know about this and is forced to take care of her, even though he doesn't want to. It ends pretty horribly, I really wanted to end differently, but then again, it couldn't have ended differently, and the ending was great. Once again, I think the mood and lighting was magnificent and I would like to see the full movie.

I still have to mention my all-time favourite movie (even though it's cheezy by today's standards) which is The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis, I really love the atmosphere and originality in that one + the video game was awesome...

tl,dr - Fifth Element + 2 movies I don't know the titles of.
Like I said before.we are going to own these guys,no problem.I could beat their entire team 1 on 8 with no monitor. -Tasteless translating

I downloaded Requim for a Dream the other day thinking it'd be pretty bleh, but wanted to watch something new. It was excellent. This was pretty much the same with Romeo and Julliet the first time I watched it, but I thought that was excellent also.

Oh, and Zodiac! Great Movie that I never expected to be that great.

There's about 6 different DVD/Blu-Ray covers for this movie not sure which one is the original one, this was the most legible one however. I personally really enjoyed this movie, a typical British crime-drama that while it doesn't come up with anything new, it expertly displays the genre. Also good to see pre-bond Daniel Craig, as I personally think the role he plays as Bond is too restrictive for such a good actor (don't get me wrong he plays Bond well though).

Right away comes to my mind
M (1931)
I saw it very high in the imdb ratings (8.6), but being so old I didn't expect much.
Just how incredibly modern the story is and how it still works, same scenario can be used today.
It's in german, but the main actor had a quite prosperous hollywood carrier.

Another movie was K-Pax, it's not a master piece like M but the acting of Kevin Spacey shines. This movie is different, positive. (might be suffering slightly of cheesyness, but I think it enters the hidden gems category)

wow I really must see this man from earth film if people are comparing it to 12 Angry Men, which is for me the best film ever made.

Completely agree with those who said Shutter Island, it's just quite amazing and well-acted, and intense.

Personally I remember being deeply affected by this film:

But this is the best film no one has heard of, no doubt (completely heartwrenching, amazing film):

tragedy about a family put in a prison camp, and the father tries to keep the child blissfully unaware that they are actually in a camp at all, desperately tries to make it all seem like a game.

Woah K=Pax, not heard anything about the film in years. I remember watching it. Nothing about the story or plot, just that I watched it. Going to watch that again!

Boy in the Striped Pajamas is another good film. About two very young boys in the World War. One is in a Concentration camp and the other is the son of the man in charge of the camp. They both talk to each other through the fence and they are both so innocent and have no idea whats going on. Very good film with good ending.

hmm interesting.. The first thing I thought after reading OP's 1st post was: "Tim Roth.", and then I scroll down like 2 posts and see your link ;P

Anywhoozle, to the point. This is a fantastic thread I think, there are so many movies that don't get nearly the credit they deserve, simply because they just don't have enough exposure to the regular "rent-a-movie-and-eat-popcorn-with-the-guys/girlfriend"s out there. If you follow the scene more intently(cannes, bafta etc), you are more likely to catch most good movies that are being produced. However, there are still those movies that elude even those who do. Tim roth is a great example of this. In the words of a friend of a friend(lol?), Francis Ford Coppola: "Tim Roth is one of the most underrated actors of the 21st century. He is without a doubt one of the most talented actors I have ever had the priviledge to watch on the canvas".

And how true that statement is.. Tim starred in several movies and TV shows in the 1980's, but it wasn't until the early 1990's people started to notice him. I would argue that his 'break through' - if you will - came with the Quentin Tarantino movie "Reservoir Dogs", where he starred along side alot of great actors; including Tarantino himself. Some names to describe the calibre of actors in the movie: Harvey Keitel(Thelma & Louise, Pulp Fiction, Smoke), Michael Madsen(Outlaw, Kill bill vol.2, Wyatt Earp), Chris Penn(Rush hour, Return from the river Kwai, Footloose), Steve Buscemi(Coffee and cigarettes, Con air, Mr. Deeds, Armageddon, The big lebowski), etc etc.

Okay this is getting a bit long winded, but my point is, whenever I say to myself: "hmm what movie should I watch? what's a good movie that I haven't seen?", I usually just end up getting some Tim Roth movie; even early works. If you pick a movie - might not be well known at all - that has a talented actor in it, it's generally gonna be a good movie.

Now I guess there's a little flipside to this. You kind of have to have a passion for movies that the regular "I watch movies for pure entertainment, explosions, cars and hot chicks". Nevertheless, I think these people would also be able to appreciate good acting, wether it be an action movie or a drama or what have you.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
