More specifically, Quake Live is a free, browser based version of Quake 3. It features the intense, fast paced, competitive first-person shooter gameplay of the original, with matchmaking, greatly improved weapon balance, new maps, buddy chat and a number of other features all heaped on top. You can play this game out of your browser, you can play it vs people of your skill level, and you can have a ton of fun doing so.
Why should I load this up instead of Modern Warfare or Bloons?
Like Starcraft, Quake Live is a game of resource management and strategy as much as mechanical skill and blinding speed. Top players have a mental count of the clock times every useful item on the map will spawn at, and trap, ambush, and steal from each other accordingly, sometimes planning minutes in advance.
Also like starcraft, you don't have to be very good to enjoy playing against people of your own skill level. Quake Live produces a lot of memorable moments at every level of play. When was the last time you could remember a MW2 game a few hours later?
son1dow Lithuania variable, medium. Last div @ ESR league. Duel mostly
Rubinxinator Czech Republic I don't consider myself very good. Playing only for few months >.< Clan Arena. I want to start Dueling soon.

Infamous Austria avg TDM/Duel
eReSHa Poland/Europe Low, know basics like strafe jumpings, rocket jumping, etc. I'd love to get better at dueling so I wouldn't mind finding some dedicate duel partner.
Alurr Denmark Bad Clan Arena / Duel / (instagib)
Langley_Rn Europe mediocre Duel
elation europe LOOOW! but it will probably improve greatly to maybe mid-/low+ over the next coming days Duel or FFA
CP_Stratos Czech Republic [editor's note: czech republic is awesome!] low or low-middle tdm, ctf, ca, duel, maybe ffa just for fun once a week
tRUMR EU - Iceland Baddie (got decent aim just no quake skills :D) duel and ca to fool around
Some news:
There's a huuuuuge patch coming out at some point in the near future, probably around the time of quakecon. Summarizing what we know about it:
- Freeze tag mode is now in. Never played it, but my understanding is that you have two teams. When you kill somebody instead of dying they freeze - by standing near a frozen teammate you can thaw them and restore them to life. First team to get entirely frozen loses.
- Website interface has been revamped.
- TWENTY-SEVEN new maps, some q3 ports but many will be new to everyone.
- Tweaks to existing maps
- Game will be moving to a subscription model. There will be three teirs: free, paid, and extra-paid. Free will essentially be a demo version since you will only be able to play on the maps that currently exist. What comes with second and third level accounts is unknown. One area of concern: you are supposed to buy your subscription annually.

I just started when I saw the game in the best free games thread. I enjoy it but it's not a game I'll devote tons of thought to like Starcraft.
Name: ClydeM Region: US East Skill: Tier 2 generally, in the 20's, tier 1/teens in Clan Arena Gametype: Play em all, but I suck at Clan Arena (item control is my best skill)
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion man

Yeah, it kind of proves that people tend to like the type more than the competitiveness in games as there are popular threads for DotA\LoL\HoN (I know that they're not the same genre but similar artstyles\viewpoints\micro\etc do their job) even if they said that competitive drive is the most important thing for starcraft.
