First off, it is a very complicated situation in saying 'clearing inferno' because it is highly related to different classes, i was simply doing a generalization there. Wiz was the easiest to clear diablo at the first few days because of the huge exploit and then DH is the easiest class for a long time since he can farm act3 so efficiently with glass cannon build (dh doesnt even need dps when all the dh in the world were rushing the replenish chest in underbridge). And there was this chapter skipping exploit where everyone plays the game knew and used it (since launch and lasted for a long long time). Those are facts and they are caused by the exploits. The first exploit that ruined the economy is probably the replenish chest in act2.

Now if you tell me you can clear inferno without using wiz/dh (and monk to some extend in the first few days after launch) in 80hours, you either have some extremely good luck (on AH or drop), or you used someone's help to clear diablo (in this case there is nothing to discuss of). And that only applies to players played since launch. After all the nerf/changes etc, i dare to say new players are impossible to clear D3 in under 200hours. 3 of my friends who started since last month (in which i told them not to buy the game) now stuck in act1 (obviously) with the richest one has 500k in bank. I just lol'ed at them and tell them i couldn't really help them either.

Ill take this challenge. Buy me an account and I'll clear Inferno in under 200 hours with a Barb.

My barb (my only character) beat inferno 5 weeks ago, and the stat sheet tells me that today I have 159 hours played. I don't mean to sound like a dickhead, but if you've spent over 200 hours and still haven't cleared inferno I daresay something is going wrong.

Before the Act2+ nerfs it was practically impossible to get past Act 2 without severe exploiting in one form or another.

ha. I am sure if you asked around your mate you will get someone to let you play on his account.

When i said clearing inferno, i mean you have the gears to clear every type of elites/bosses you encounter, only by yourself. And that has to be done by what a normal player would do, first run through is enjoying everything etc, finish most sidequests etc, like a normal gamer. And then you can rush through nightmare/hell. I don't even know how do any legit player get enough gold to buy gears for Ghom lol

Oh.. so your point was that it's too hard for you to use trading or the auction house to find and sell gear, or that you didn't want to use it. I understand. Well, then there's nothing I can say.

I cleared right up to Siegebreaker before the patch and cleared the rest right as the nerf patch hit more or less, when I had finished Diablo i had clocked something like 150h. I didnt exploit at all. I looked for tips here and on some other sites and looked for cheap gear on ah with the right stats. I was not insanely rich. AH is abit wild on EU now. 200h is a long time 1lucky weapon drop and you can do it as a barb the other stuff needed to clear the game is available if you look hard enough

I understand, I just disagree with it. Yeah, that's right, I disagree with your feelings! :D

Seriously, though, it's just my philosophical point of view towards the whole thing. I think most players feel that way not because something with the game is wrong, but due to faults of their own. This simply stems from the fact that I was able to "beat the game" with a reasonable time investment, and while I had one lucky drop that netted me 15 mil on the auction house that let me progress a lot further, those 15 mil can easily be earned in another 20 hours of playtime as well. Plus I don't think I'm super skilled or anything like that either. So there's no reason why other players out there shouldn't be able to do it (even in the tumultuous gold climate right now). Just because they're the majority doesn't mean that doing what they want will make the game better, even for them.

Instead of trying to adapt to the situation and get smarter, more informed or maybe even a little bit more patient with the game, they want to have things made easier for them. And there's just something fundamentally off about that for me. Not just from the egotistical perspective off "Damn all these games in the past few years have been casualized to hell, all because of these noobs not being able to use the keyboard and mouse right" or something like that. Instead I think that trying to overcome that challenge will ultimately yield a more fulfilling experience for those players, and maybe in the long run make them better persons as well.

But that's really just my point of view, and I guess there's nothing to do here other than to bow to the will of the majority.

well, even if you can 'beat the game', you still need to farm and get value for your farm. having more players in the economy is in the interest of not only the "majority" but also players who can 'beat the game.'

all the midlevel gear that's depreciating is suffering from stagnant mid level demand from players leaving the game.

Someone wrote a thread about the auction house and while there was a lot of pseud-political science talk and psychobabble, the interesting point was that the auction house creates a disconnect between the act of playing the game and progressing.

I don't progress in the game because I beat the previous act, or because I beat it a reasonable number of times, or because I beat it so fast or easily. If I'm using the AH to buy gear, I beat the act, keep beating the act and then at a seemingly arbitrary point I get gear magically handed to me. There's no progression curve where I gradually improve or overcome challenges.

The inferno nerf might not be necessary, but it is also essentially the same as a drop rate increase. If items fall on a spectrum, then a difficulty nerf just increases the range of possible drops that are viable. This may be necessary to prevent a total item glut.

i like the elements you identified like "adapt to the situation and get smarter, more informed" - however, to me those points aren't necessary directly applicable to diablo gameplay but rather the auction house where you must utilise it efficiently, the gameplay itself is rather simple and regardless of your skill level it is purely about the luck of the drop, which is why someone can clear inferno in <50 hour compared to someone that haven't completed the achievement with >200 hours.

I have to be skeptical about that if they have an authenticator.

Unlike in WoW, there appear to be few (if any) checks into account history to determine what actually happened. Its not like you need anything besides a cursory glance anyways... Speaking of this, they still haven't really done anything against botting despite how easy it is to identify current and former botters.

Assuming you're right, then, why haven't people done this to dupe expensive items like a nat's set or something that would go for $100+ on the RMAH? Wouldn't this kind of duping allow people to make hundreds of dollars and cause prices to crash (like what happened in runescape for anyone else that played in middle school)?

Or why even stop at a single set at that point? When you have two sets, get a new account and copy both of the sets, and you will have 4 sets. Get new account etc until you have you entire stash full of $250 gear. By Getting new accounts each time you avoid suspicion, and if you want to avoid having your stash full of 50 identical items, you can just sell your duplicates of $250 items and buy others on one of the auction houses. True D3 end game would then be to buy new accounts, transfer a stash full of $250 items (small ones, to fit many) and play a bit on it to make it look natural, maybe even rush it up to 60. Give all the items to one of your other accounts and ask for rollback. Sell the copied items for (number of items in stash)*$250. Get new account and repeat.

But hopefully that doesn't work, or the market would have crashed completely long ago?
