UPDATE 2010-07-21 Interview with QXC
We are doing a series of "Interview With The Pros" over the next week where we get to know some of the pros on a more personal level and hear their current thoughts on starcraft while having fun.

This is our first interview ever with qxc, so we had issues for the first few minutes with ventrilo clicks and delayed conversations leading us to step on each other, but it smoothed out later.

----------------------------------------

Hey everyone! This is Kitty and Krytos here. (EDIT: We are a commentators/tips duo, read below for more details) We are very new commentators to the esports scene, but we really do believe in the esports movement and want to help bring more attention to it in America by adding more diversity to the commentators already out there. Day9, Husky, HD, and others are all great. They have their unique styles, which is great because some will love Day9's strong analysis, whereas others might just enjoy Husky's energy and goofiness in his videos.

Either way, we believe that at a buffet, people should have a nice selection to pick and choose from, and we want to be a part of that selection. We know we are not the best (still improving with each video), however this is a fun hobby for us and believe we can help bring content to the community that is worthwhile in the form of our commentary and tips for beginners.

If we're not your cup of tea, that is fine and understandable. No need to support us, but please do support other commentators because the more attention esports gets, the more serious it becomes and can grow.

We plan to stay dedicated to providing VODs regularly to the community because we also feel that everyone can benefit from the content, explanations, and overall entertainment value of watching these games.

http://www.youtube.com/user/kkstarcraft

Note: we read the other thread about self-promoters very carefully, and after talking to some of the mods, we think that we will be providing good content for everyone and the sc2 community. Go esports!! =)

Edit: we should point out that the videos of us talking in front of the camera is using my very poopy canon camera. Other videos with commentary/tips are done with a Blue Snowball mic. We believe that mic is good enough, but if people still feel that the quality of the mics in the commentary/tips is not good enough, please let us know if there are better ones than the Blue Snowball for a reasonable price.

Also, we should point out that right now Kitty is very new to the RTS scene, but still dedicated to picking up the game more and doing more commentaries with Krytos down the line. Krytos is more experienced and thus jumping straight into commentaries. We plan to evolve quite a bit over the course of months/years. So expect to see improvements over time! =)

Good to see other people taking an interest in doing this. The one thing I can strongly suggest is to not only focus on your ability to commentate; but your game knowledge as well. Make sure you have a strong fundamental understanding of the trends in builds, what certain actions made by players mean, etc. All too often I hear commentators state complete misinformation about player's intentions despite it being painfully obvious what they intend.

Good luck!

try not to watch the game before you commentate them. I know its hard sometimes but it really affects the way you speak. the game I watched you had clairvoyant powers.

also TL is brutal with complaints so you better be prepared. cleavage won't save you.

Some people prefer Klazart, some people prefer Chill.

Although I definitely agree game knowledge is the most important part about commentating, some people are looking more for the enthusiasm and the enjoyment in it. Specifically bronze players.

The only way to become a good commentator in my opinion is be good at what you are commentating at.

Watched your TLOvsWhitera game, One thing i would like to mention, is dont bother speculating if it's the 'real' TLO or 'real' whitera. All you gotta do is look at the apm, 150 ish and they're legit. why commentate a game if you dont believe it to be the legit players?

I agree 100% that enthusiasm and a general feel of enjoyment is absolutely essential to great commentary. However, even in the eyes on a bronze league player, a commentator loses credibility if they consistently state what is going to happen only to have it be completely wrong. A lot of lower level players look up to the commentators to relay accurate information to them so that they can better learn from the games they are watching.

Even if there is a big lack of femininity in the playing and commentating of StarCraft, i would prefere a more strict look, muck like HD. Even if Day[9] is a nice and chill way to make up in the morning, with no need to even put on your cloths, it feels good to see professional.

I often prefere a womans voice, but in GomTV, i can't remember her name, but they had a female commentator for a short while. Perfect eyecandy, but she didn't contribute to the commentating. So i would love to see a professional, clever female commentator. Cleavage isn't all, SUIT UP!

Still, keep it going, you're doing great! =)

Is it just me, or did ONLY the dude commentate during the TLO vs White Ra game on their channel?

Female commentators are fine aslong as they don't say anything too dumb (Like "OMFG LOOK AT THAT CUTE SENTRY. OMG").

You guys seem OK, i'll wait for another video where Kitty commentates along.

I watched to hear her but all I heard was his voice. Not really a duo if only he speaks.

When you make videos either have health bars always showing or alt click a lot so people know the hp situation.

Also the chick doesn't feature in any of the commentaries.

First, about logo since you asked in a video. Put some kind of borders to it, so we can better see it's not part of the game.

Watched couple videos, so I could give some feedback for you.

There's so much SC2 content available all over the web, so you need to attract people to watch your videos. You have a lot of videos of matches that are not tied to anything or title does not give hint what it will present, so there's no incentive or hook to watch some random game.

One obvious way to make a match more meaningful is to have some kind of incentive to win, every tournament match have incentive to win and are often more meaningful to spectator that basic ladder match.

Another option would be coherent in naming of games, bunching them into series and have some sort of general viewpoint in every series. Example: Day[9] Daily has random replays in his show, but his bread and butter is to concentrate on analysis of the game. Another example could be your own Basic Starcraft with Kitty. Right away when I read the video named "Basic Starcraft With Kitty! #1 - Hellion Harass" I knew what to expect. However, when you have video like "PvT - WhiteRa vs TheLittleOne - Game 1" there's no way to tell if this match is interesting or not, if it's play-to-play commentated, analysed or what are the stakes in this match.

Also, your introduction in this thread made me understand that you cast as a duo. But I didn't find videos where you would do commentating together. Maybe it was my misunderstanding.

In summary, I'd like to see more focus on specific viewpoint and somehow communicate it to spectators as well as organizing videos in a way that this focus will be clear (part of the communication).

I'm losing my own focus now so I better stop before I talk more nonsense. By the way, check my siggy, it might interest you.
