For those who play as protoss, you start with getting your probes mining, getting a few more probes out before building the first pylon. At what supply do most people get it at? Each different supply count can affect your speed greatly. 6 Pylon - Used for rushes or fast gateway builds - Usually considered the most cheesy first pylon. 7 Pylon - (this one i use) Reasonably quick, damage to econ is minimal - Better for quicker tech 8 Pylon - This is what i see some SC2 players do. It gives you a econ boost at the start at the sacrifice of slightly later gate. At this point your nesus usually has enough energy for chrono boost - Considered the "pro" first pylon 9 Pylon - Apparently standard. People use this even though it has you supply blocked temporarily if you want more probes. This pylon gives the best starting econ.
When do you place your first pylon, and why?
Poll: When does your pylon go down9 Supply (83) 86% 8 Supply (10) 10% 6 Supply (right away) (3) 3% 7 Supply (1) 1% 97 total votes Your vote: When does your pylon go down (Vote): 6 Supply (right away) (Vote): 7 Supply (Vote): 8 Supply (Vote): 9 Supply

| no, most players will make it right on 9, then start a probe after the pylon to make 10/10. Then you chrono boost 2 probes and throw down a gate at 12. |

| I always thought 9 was as standard as it comes, didn't realize anyone ever did 8. |

| Really. I know i am only in bronze, but most tosses i face go 7 or 8 pylon (and mostly i get matched up with much better players for some reason). Never knew 9 pylon was so favourable. |

| I always do 8 pylon, and boost the probe right when it finishes. |

| 9 pylon about 99% of the time. Don't see how you can justify a 7 pylon. |

| I don't think I ever see 8 pylon. As you can already see 9 pylon is the standard |

I build my first pylon at 9 supply.
Each probe mining increases income rate, so I don't really see how making a pylon earlier than 8 would give you any sort of advantage, as you will be sacrificing a (relatively) large amount of minerals, and are more likely to become mineral starved later in your build order.
Building your first pylon at 8 supply avoids the few seconds of supply block you get with 9 pylon, but you spend some time not training a probe (unless I'm doing something wrong, it seems like you would have to spend a few seconds not training to accumulate enough minerals for the pylon). That said, you might have enough energy to chrono boost the next probe after the pylon is queued up, and that might make up the difference.
I don't know, but I would be surprised if it made much of a difference. |

6 and 7 are just weird 8 pylon 10 gate rush on zerg else 9 pylon 12 gate is my standard opening. |

| I think you will find 10 pylon is much more common than 6 or 7, however, it is not included in your poll. I believe this option gives you the best economy for a 10 gate build. |

um. a 6 or 7 pylon would be an all in or cheese.
9 is standard. 10 is ok if you have a specific build in mind (which would usually involve a 10gate) |

| If you time 9 right..it wont supply block you(as in build it exactly 100) and if it does it'll be for like a second or two at most, mine mostly finishes just before my probe starts at 11/18 or whatever |

Although there is a small window there, often the delay will cause your supply to be blocked for a couple of seconds or so. |

You left off 10 as everyone said. 9 is standard for me though sometimes I do 10.

No way. If you do it right, you won't get supply blocked for but a split second. Definitely less than half a second.Last edit: 2010-07-16 12:22:07 |

When people say 9 pylon is it when the 9th probe actually FINISHES or is it when the 9th probe is being STARTED?.. Obviously asking because you are at 9 supply when the 9th probe starts..

Building your pylon on 9 means that you're building it while your 9th Probe is being built. It leaves you a VERY small amount of time that you're supply blocked (under 1 second), and is easily the most economical.
I couldn't imagine doing a Pylon on 6 or 7 barring being cheesy. |

9 Pylon is just pumping probes until you have 100 minerals>then make it. You get the 10 supply probe right after you have enough after the pylon. You will be blocked for just a few second. |

| 9 supply, and many times there is no supply block preventing me from making my next probe because the pylon will finish before the tenth probe is warped in. I usually send my probe when i have 9/10 with a probe being warped and my minerals are at 70, allowing it the travel time. |
