Thanks for doing such a huge write up! Hopefully this will limit the number of new threads about computer hardware ;p

I just took a quick look, but your blurb on Extra Low Voltage RAM is not really catching the point of low voltage RAM. It is not so much the electricity that you save as the gains to be had by overclocking with it and a stock 1366 CPU. Since socket 1366 CPUs have integrated memory controllers you can not just up the voltage to the controller and wash your hands of the whole deal.

Instead, you have to up the QPI/DRAM (different names depending on Phoneix/Award), voltage which also increases CPU heat. If you are trying to get a nice overclock on a 920, then you definitely do not want to increase the heat of your CPU for no real reason. Extra low voltage RAM is hands down a great idea if you want to overclock on a 1366. Granted, you don't want to pay too much for it.

You might also add OCZ to the reliable PSU list. They are typically cheap after rebate, yet far far better than the truly crud PSUs.

Posted this in the other thread, was never answered. Hopefully I get some replies this time around.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone have any criticisms of this laptop? I am going to purchase this for sc2 and college and was wondering if anyone had anything to say about it.

15.6” FHD 16: 9 LED Backlit Wide screen (1920x1080) Super Clear Glare Type Screen
Intel® Core™ i5-540M, 2.53-3.06GHz, (3MB L3 cache)
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD5650 1024MB PCI-Express GDDR3
4,096MB (2 SODIMMS) DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory
500GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache Buffer (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s)
$1030

One of my minor concerns is that that the fn key and the ctrl are swapped so the fn key is on the far left. I was wondering if its possible to change this in the BIOS or does sc2 allow you to rebind it to something else like capslock?

maleorderbridge: Gskill and Kingston have been marketing their 'Low Voltage RAM' at 1.35/1.25V. You normally don't see DDR3 above 1.65 anymore anyways so the meaning has shifted a bit.

Cheap and more reliable than truly crud does not mean they are reliable, imo

DaBears57: Seems like a solid laptop to me. The resolution is a bit high for that screen size, but if you don't care, go for it. Don't expect to do much high graphics gaming at 1920x1080 though!

No idea how to do the remapping

Right, I was planning on playing at like 1280x1024 or something similar just to get better FPS. This should be able to play sc2 on atleast medium right with some settings on high at this resolution?

The i7-720QM is better than the i5-540M, and cheaper.

The price for changing the stock hard drive to the 500gb HD is more expensive than doing it yourself. You could stay with the stock and buy your own internal hard rive to install, if you're willing to of course.

Here's how your laptop's graphics card benches.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5650.23697.0.html

There are programs out there that can change the key functions but it's not legal in competitive gaming aspects (lol).

Everything else looks fine.

DaBears57: Shouldn't be a problem with medium at all.

R04R: The problem with installing a HDD yourself is that often times laptops do not come with Windows 7 installation disks for some reason.

There are many ways to map keys into other keys and even macros, mouse movements, etc. in software. Unfortunately, they don't work with the Fn key. The Fn key is handled at a lower level in the computer than the other keys (by the BIOS I think but don't quote me on that), so it is unable to be changed as far as I know. Certainly it's handled below where SC2 could change it. I don't think there's a BIOS setting for changing the Fn key, but different BIOSes have different options. Anyhow, I wouldn't count on being able to change the Fn key position in any way, sorry.

The stock option on the laptop is to have no OS, just drivers and utility software. It costs $115 for them to install Windows 7 Home Premium for you. =/ I'd rather take no OS and then since he's going to college he'll have a college student discount for Windows 7.

Yes, it is precisely that meaning that I was using. 1.2-1.35V RAM is ideal for overclocking. 1.65 is mostly garbage, and 1.5V is just average.

Try sticking 6 sticks rated 1.5V, let alone 1.65V, in an X58 and not cranking the QPI/DRAM up. Chances are that you only see 4-8GBs at the stock voltages. Over-voltage is practically a pre-requisite with the x58 chipset/i7's if you stick with 1.5V+ RAM and have a high-end system. If you need to already over-volt just to get your rated specs then obviously trying to get more than that will require even more over-voltage.

The 1.2-1.35V RAM helps to curtail that difficulty. CPU draw actually decreases almost exactly in line with the % decrease in voltage. If you run your sticks at 1.2V instead of 1.5V your processor will not be drawing the expected 130W, it will take on closer to 105-110W. That is a huge decrease in heat since as power increases linearly, heat increases close to exponentially.

There is an article on anandtech that is entirely about power consumption and heat of the CPU when using 1.2-1.35V RAM. Naturally I can no longer find it.

Again though, this is only with socket 1366 CPUs, so I am kind of splitting hairs, at least so far as 90% of the people building systems are concerned. I build systems for a living, but almost entirely very high-end professional builds. Musicians, artists, etc.

This RAM has a great decrease in price if buying two kits on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104175&cm_re=kingston_low_voltage_ddr3-_-20-104-175-_-Product

1.25V without too much of a premium. It is CAS9, but that means almost nothing in virtually every single real world application.

Okay, can someone explain this to me? I'm a super computer noob, so I don't get this, but what's the difference between specific i3, i5, and i7 processors other than the clock rate? Also, I looked the clock rates up for the i7-720QM and i5-540M, and they are 1.6 and 2.53 GHz, respectively? What?

I need help with this, because I'm getting a laptop, and I have the choice between an i3-350M (2.26 GHz) and an i5-540M (2.40 GHz), with the i5 being $100 more. Which one would you say is more worth it? What settings would I have to play SC2 on with each one?

The i7-720QM is a quad core with a clock speed of 1.6ghz but can turbo up to 2.8ghz. It has 6mb L3 cache.

The i5-540M is a dual core with a clock speed of 2.53ghz and can turbo up to 3.06ghz. It has half the amount of L3 cache of the i7 at only 3mb.

L3 cache is like onboard RAM and allows it to feed information to the computer faster.

At the cost of 1.25V/1.35V RAM you might as well just get higher density 4GB modules of RAM! They are coming down in price quickly now :o

I do realize that LGA 1366 CPUs have problems with voltages and the memory controller, but that is an extreme case where somebody is actually populating all of the channels :/ (which doesn't happen that often).

When you are only using 2 cores, the i7 720 turns into a 2.8GHz dual core. I don't think you need the i5 really. You should be fine on medium/high with the i3 imo.

Do you have a GPU attached?

Disconnect the hard drive, it isn't necessary for booting.

Try booting with only 1 stick of RAM

When buying an AMD X4 processor, you absolutely need a new CPU HSF unless you like having the sound of a dryer next to your head constantly.

I bought an AMD X4 955 BE boxed a few days ago and actually planned to go with the boxed cooler. But the noise was so unbelievably terrible that I had to buy a new HSF.

Got me the Scythe Yasya, best cooler I've ever had.

Thanks for the thread, great insight. Can you also add to the sites spot, for Koreans to add websites? I'll ask my gf what sites her brother uses to build his computer so I can also add a website or two (currently in the process of looking into building a comp) Canada uses Tiger Direct if I'm not mistaken, which is very similar to Newegg.

Tigerdirect has caused me troubles in the past. They ship with the bare minimum :/

It's really bad to buy from them imo. People have gotten HDDs in small card board boxes with like no protection so I wouldn't want to buy from them.

If there are Korean sites I'll gladly add them.
