That looks okay. PSU is priced well but out of stock I think? You're way under 550W, so you could take the 450W model if you wanted.
GTX 550 Ti is overpriced in general. HD 6850 is slightly more expensive and considerably better. But considering that you're just talking about Blizzard games (which run better on Nvidia anyway and don't require too much graphics power), and that the GTX 550 Ti is factory overclocked, it is fine.

I wanted to end up at 900 euro, but slightly went over that 
Around page 1101-1103 i already asked for help, but i had to change some things since i forgot to take into account a network card. I also decided i could settle for a 500 gb HDD in favor of a better gpu, that only needs one 6 pin instead of 2, which was the case for the 6870.
I got worried about the PSU though, since my build will probably use around 380 watt on full load, but 430 watt is pretty close to that especially since im not sure how much watt is on the 12v rail.., it might deteriorate over the years and be insufficient right? so i added the 500w model.Last edit: 2012-05-26 09:53:33 |

So I'm thinking about building a new PC within the next few months because my friend is offering me some cash for my current PC and I feel like it's time for an upgrade anyway (most of the components are about 2 years old or so).
I'll list my current specs so that you guys know what I want to upgrade from. (My current setup can handle streaming some games but not at consistent 60fps and usually only at the lowest settings. I also get general FPS issues in many other games, even without streaming.)
Intel i5 750 @2.67 GHz 8MB L3 Cache
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1600
Radeon 5770 HD 1GB DDR5
motherboard is an MSI H55M-E33.

What is your budget?
Target range is $800-1000, maybe even a bit higher depending on what's available.
Also I haven't actually bought/built a new PC totally from scratch in a long time, I've just been upgrading the parts to a 2004 Alienware Aurora system every 2-3 years or so and now all that is left from the original is the tower and DVD drives. But since my friend is going to buy my entire PC, I'll need a new tower/power supply/dvd drive as well. The only things I'm not selling are my hard drives, peripherals, and monitors.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, I haven't really kept up with desktop hardware news for a while so I'm not really sure what the best options for me are right now. One last thing I'd like some tips about are SSDs, right now I have a few 7200rpm SATA drives but depending on price and practicality I'd be willing to consider running my OS from an SSD or something. No, they go by "custom" loops. Closed roop refers to self enclosed all-in-one solutions, that are shitty, overpriced, or both. |

A friend of mine just sent me his build with a couple questions that I'm not really qualified to answer so I figured I'd bring them here...He's wondering if he should go for a more powerful CPU than the i3, and if so should it be i5 or i7? Also, hes worried about this upgrade warranting a better power supply. The rig would be used for gaming and general college work stuff, I don't anticipate him really going for overclocking or anything fancy. Everything looks good, except for the motherboard, you dont need a P67 if you're not gonna overclock, get a H61/H67 motherboard , he doesn't need a power supply. If he wants a better CPU he should get a i5 2500k/3570k

Hey folks, I need a quick advice.
I'm renovating my brother's computer.
He runs:
Motherboard: Asrock Alivenf6g-vsta
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core 4000+ 2.11GHz
RAM: 2Gb (2x1gb) not sure which clock, gonna check when I shut down, if neccessary
Display: 1920 x 1080
His graphics card died, so the computer runs on the integrated graphics card now.
I will probably get rid of the RAM I have, and buy 2x2 GB (because I already had problems with these sticks of RAM, they're different manufacturer, maybe different clock, and I had to put them on different channels).
My question is: I want to buy a graphics card, what is the best graphics card I can get for around $50?
Is there an auto-pick in this price range? I would maybe choose to spend slightly more than $50, but the prices are also higher in Croatia, so aim for below $50 please. I want to be able to play SC2, minimum settings is fine.

Do you need more than low levels of AA and AF? Can you describe what they both do? In particular, can you give a brief executive summary of HOW AA does what it does, without getting too technical? If not, and you're not playing on a 32"+ display at that resolution, you probably won't actually see much benefit to "truly" maxing settings.
A single 670 should let you get 60ish FPS reasonably close to full maxed, unless there's bizarre driver issues. If you're using a 120hz display, you'd want more GPU horsepower to lock in at 120 FPS.
Also, beyond the lower levels of AA/AF, most games with tech demo syndrome are fast-paced enough that you won't see the benefits while you're really playing them. Just when you stop to look.
Take it from someone who loves playing with shit like that. You get severe diminishing returns per dollar when you aim for true max vs maxed enough. If you just want to, go for it, but there's not much value to the average user if they don't enjoy benching and e-peen wars.

I understand that AA is smoothing angled lines and is done sort of by sampling the colors of surrounding pixels. It takes a significant amount of power to do at high resolutions. My 1920x1200 display is a 24 inch display so fairly average ppi for a monitor (as far as I know).
I am not sure what AF is.
My screen is not 120hz.
The other thing I think of is that I don't want to turn around and upgrade my machine in 1 or 2 years. In other words--is it worth it at all to get 2 cards now and be a little on the 'overkill' side but then still be able to run games 3 years from now?
But then--costs get cheaper as time goes on--so maybe it would be easier just to get a capable PSU now and then buy a new graphics card in 2014 or whenever I deem necessary.
