Can you explain why closed loop is horrible? As for the RAM, I'll probably scale it back to 8GB and either save the cash or re-allocate it elsewhere. My budget pre-tax is ~$1400-1500.

Because it's bulky, irritating to set up, more expensive than air, and performs worse. If you're only playing starcraft 2 and similar styled games (read: not fps's) a 670 is also massive overkill. A 6850 or so can max sc2 easily. If you are playing full 3d games though, the 670 will be very nice .

I presume you're overclocking too, otherwise the discussion of which cooler to get is moot as you don't need one for stock (along with other component changes if you aren't overclocking).

Uh, the closed-loop coolers don't really take more space (in fact, less around the CPU socket, which is of course not important for a typical mid-tower build, but it's relevant sometimes), are easier to install than some tower heatsinks, and are less worrisome for rough transportation. You do get some combination of higher price, noise, and temperatures, compared to air coolers though. Also, water cooling may provide less airflow and cooling to motherboard voltage regulation parts.

Agreed on RAM amount. Also, Corsair Vengeance is probably a little overpriced. Motherboard probably could be better for the price, but it's probably okay. I wouldn't spend that much on a SandForce-based SSD when alternatives are only slightly more expensive. $92 for a Seasonic M12II (the old series) sounds like a lot for a budget-conscious older power supply design, even if it's solid, and why the 620W model? Agreed that $420 on a graphics card may be excessive. It depends on what you're going to do with it.

No mechanical hard drive or optical drive?

Moving my current HDD and Optical drive over to the new system.

Do you guys have any recommendations on better Mobo/SSD/Power Supply choices at roughly the same price point?

Thanks a lot for all the advice and input guys, appreciate it!

Samsung 830 and Intel 520 are both very good SSDs. The 450w and 550w Antec Earthwatts are on sale on NCIX and are around the same price as the Seasonic.

hey guys,

i would like to know what ivy bridge board i should get if i'm not overclocking? i do not want to do a BIOS update or whatever, so according to my wiki research i'm left with either the Q77 or H77, which seems exactly the same? i was looking at ASRock, is that a good brand..?

also regarding SSDs, i'm aware that the OCZ has released the agility 4 and vertex 4, and the prices for agility/vertex 3 are extremely low. is there a reason for this plummeting of price, aside from the new release; is the drivers bad or anything?

one last question- since i'm not overclocking i understand i can use a stock cooler, but i'm really into quiet computing. i was recommended the hyper 212 evo, is that a lot quieter than the default intel 3570k stock heatsink? my assumption was it might be louder if it's more powerful, but i dont have much of an idea, honestly

i'm not purchasing my components for a while, but i would like to be relatively knowledgable about the flow of this market so when i actually buy my components i wouldnt be doing research from scratch.

thanks in advance to whoever's reading this!

There is also B75 boards...They are devoid of luxury features to lower their cost. I would go with an H77 board though. The good brands are: ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte, MSI and the meh brands are ECS and Biostar.

The stock intel cooler uses a 80mm fan. The 212 Evo uses a 120mm fan. So the 212 Evo can spin at lower rpm and still move the same amount of air. Lower rpm=quieter.

I have no idea on the SSD's.

quick google search says that Q77 is for business chipsets so you would want a H77. As for the brand, I think its important to check warranty locations and etc as you can always end up needing to ship back to the manufacturer.

The agility/vertex 3 had alot of problems which have seemed to been fixed (not 100% sure), you might want to go with something more reliable such as Intel/Crucial/samsung/missing one.

The hyper 212 is not going to be any quieter when the cpu is idle but it under load, it will keep cpu cooler and a little quieter

okay, thanks for your response! i'll look more into motherboards.

regarding the PCIe slots (i've never built a computer before), its split into types like 1x16, 2x8, and so on... can you tell me what that actually means? my gpu is probably going to be a 7850, does that affect the slot? (my current understanding is that the number of pins is where you insert your GPU. yell at me if i'm completely wrong )

The Vertex 4 is using OCZ own Indilinx Everest 2 controllers based on Marvell controllers but with custom firmware, Marvell has produced hardware for other solid SSDs like Crucial's M4. Although OCZ doesn't have their own NAND manufacturing as opposed to for example Intel or Samsung.

Shamelessly stolen from wikipedia, since I'm really good at confusing people when I try to use my own words on stuff like this:

A PCIe card fits into a slot of its physical size or larger (maximum ×16), but may not fit into a smaller PCIe slot (×16 in a ×8 slot). Some slots use open-ended sockets to permit physically longer cards and negotiate the best available electrical connection. The number of lanes actually connected to a slot may also be less than the number supported by the physical slot size.

An example is a ×8 slot that actually only runs at ×1. These slots allow any ×1, ×2, ×4 or ×8 card, though only running at ×1 speed. This type of socket is called a ×8 (×1 mode) slot, meaning it physically accepts up to ×8 cards but only runs at ×1 speed. This is also sometimes specified as "xsize (@xcapacity)" (for example, "x16(@x8)"). The advantage is that it can accommodate a larger range of PCIe cards without requiring motherboard hardware to support the full transfer rate. This keeps design and implementation costs down.

Your best bet is to look at the motherboard, and see what it actually offers, and then compare those to the physical slots.

Most commercial motherboards that I'm used to will use the x16 form factor for anything larger than x1, regardless of available bandwidth.

Really, it must of just went out of stock then.

Yes 6850 more than strong enough. Go ahead and go SSD only, no reason not to if you don't need the extra space a HDD provides.

Yes, and Diablo 3 as well. Keep in mind, however, that Blizzard games are some of the easiest for graphics cards to run. Skyrim, for example, may not run at maximum settings. Though a 6850 should be able to run even the hardest games smoothly at medium or (very rarely) low graphics settings.

Edit: At Rachnar below: I stand corrected.

an hd6850 can even run crysis 2 confortably at plenty decent settings at 1080p, i don't see any game making it unplayable with it on at the very least medium or higher then 1080p resolution

Okay, so computer is built. I turned it on, splash screen came on etc.. I realized I wouldn't have time to install the OS so I turned it off. Come back and now the computer seems to turn on, fans run, motherboard shows display, lights on but it will not display on my monitor. Tried to plug into tv, same thing. Thoughts and ideas?

Clear CMOS. It should fix your problem. I had the same problem when installing W7 on my computer because my brother kept choosing the wrong boot order.

The problem is boot order.

That seems to align with what I have read but how do I go about doing that with no display on the screen. If this helps the led display on the Moho shows code "AE"
