Perfect. What is a fair price for something like this? Given that it is probably out of warranty, highly used, and a couple of years old?

EVGA -AR has lifetime warranty, assuming your cousin registered the card. Though the warranty isn't transferable, it shouldn't be a problem since you know your cousin, you can just get him to RMA the card if anything were to happen.

I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it. Just take him out to dinner?

GTX 260 core 216 SC should have performance somewhere in the $110 range. However, it's old, so it doesn't support DX11, it runs hot / loud / power hungry, warranty is gone, and driver support won't be as good in the future.

More than $60 would be pretty generous (gifting him), I would say. Hopefully he's offering something like $40.

Hi team liquid,
I am planning on building a new computer and hoping for some advice on which parts to get from people with more knowledge than me :D

It will be for playing & streaming Starcraft 2,
With some added Photoshop and Adobe After Effects usage.

I live in Finland, europe so any tips on stores are appreciated.
I will likely not update within 2 years or so.

Looking to purchase within a week or so (unless there is a really good reason to wait a month or two)

Budget is around 1500 €, give or take.

Advice greatly appreciated :D

I was told that building it myself would save money (naturally), so I'd like to ask about that as well.

1. A raw estimate of how much is saved compared to buying it assembled (10-20-30% etc).
2. Is it hard / diffult assembling the various components.
3. How does warranty work out?
4. Any caveeats that I should be aware of before venturing into such a thing.
5. Other stuff.

Assuming a budget in the range of 1000 USD (~820 EUR) and that I want a balanced computer, what would I then be looking at component wise? Or alternatively, looking at the PC's I've posted above the price of building something in that range.

TY :-)!

Retail computers are notorious for using terrible power supplies which is one of the most important parts since a faulty one can destroy your entire computer. I wouldn't say it's particularly hard putting it together. There's plenty of video guides on the web plus with the instructions available from the components you should be fine, it's mostly like assembling really expensive lego. Staying grounded is the most important thing to remember when handling sensitive electronics.

I have to contest this. Staying grounded is at most second place. First is RTFM, by a landslide.

Thanks dude. I really like the Corsair 550d so I am gonna go with that, found a 7850 with HDMI ($230).

Here's my updated motherboard and processor.
GIGABYTE GA-H77-DS3H LGA 1155 Intel H77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard $90

Intel Core i5-3570 Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 77W $200 with promo code

So with a wireless card, power supply and case I will be just under $1000, awesome.
Photoshop is over-powered.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

No, just the one video card.

Where are you buying your parts from?

Hey guys, I am looking to get a budget PC mainly for streaming LoL / SC2; gaming is a secondary objective, as long as I can run the latest games at low / medium with decent frame rate I am fine.

What is your budget?
Technically I am looking to spend $850-$875, but my country has a 20% VAT, so that would put me at $700-$730 range

What is your resolution?
1680x1050 is the monitor that I will be playing on. I plan to have a 2nd monitor with either the same or lower resolution, but it will be used purely for tasks such as displaying chat or showing the media player (so I will be 'gaming / streaming' only on the 1680x1050 one)

What are you using it for?
Well, I guess I answered that above, but for the sake of it - I will be using the machine to stream low requirement games such as LoL / SC2 at preferably 1080p (or something between 720p and 1080p considering that I have a different aspect ratio). Low-end gaming is a secondary goal and is not important

What is your upgrade cycle?
I plan to use this computer until the end of university, so 2-3 years without major upgrades. I can possibly add small features like an SDD or more RAM over time.

When do you plan on building it?
Pretty much within a week

Do you plan on overclocking?
The real question is - will I need it? I have a couple of sample builds that I have been tinkering pretty much the whole day yesterday, so please give me your advice on that.

Do you need an Operating System?
I get free win7 via MSDN, so no.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Considering that streaming is not affected by the GPU, the answer is no.

Where are you buying your parts from?
A local vendor. The pricing is mostly similar to what you'd find in all European stores, as long as you are not looking at discounted stuff

My latest brainstorming:

MB: ASROCK Z77 Pro4-M ($90.40)
CPU: INTEL CORE i5-3570K ($234.10)
CPU Cooler: COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Evo ($30.83)
GPU: SAPPHIRE 1024M HD6850 DDR 5 PCI-E /BULK/ ($143.90)
RAM: KINGSTON 2x4GB DDR III 1600 XMP ($52.00)
HDD: WD 1024GB 64MB SATA III Blue ($82.50)
PSU: FORTRON FSP500-60APN, 500W ($46.50)
Case: KME CX-5859 ($16.00)
---------------
Total cost: $696.23 ($835.57 with VAT)

I DO NOT need Keyboard / Mouse / Headset / Monitor / Headphones / Speakers

This configuration is supposedly going to allow me to overclock the processor. The case is really random, honestly the cheapest one I could possibly find (supports both ATX and mATX), but in the end I felt like case is the only place where I can make a real cut in the cost. From the reviews I have seen, the Hyper 212 Evo allows for easy OC up to 4.7 ghz without even breaking into the 70 C, so it seemed like a good option.

So let's go with the questions:
1) MB: Should I care weather the MB is microATX or standard ATX considering what I am looking for / going for? mATX mobos simply seem cheaper and I am not likely to be using the extra expansion slots and if I ever end up getting a good GPU it would probably be wiser for me to buy 1 instead of using 2 (cost-wise).
2) CPU: Do I really need to overclock for streaming HQ? I'd be able to cut 70$ by going for a 3470 i5 and dropping the CPU cooler. With the MB I have chosen (it has no-k OC support) I should even be able to up the clock speeds of it by a few hundred. The other question also goes - do I need an i7 for streaming HQ LoL / SC2 at stable 60 FPS?
3) GPU: Considering that I don't really need a strong video card for LoL/sc2 I have decided on one that seems to be on the cheaper side while still alowing me to play all the games. I spent quite a lot of time reading up on benchmarks and reviews and I seem to like this one best, while I would have to cut something else in order to improve it. No real questions here, but I am open to suggestions.
4) Airflow - the case doesn't come with any fans; should I be looking to add any and if yes, how many (from the pictures I think that the case has slots for: 1x 120mm rear, 1x 120mm side and unknown size front)

Any help will be greatly appreciated (and rewarded with end result pics if you guys want )

Cheers!
I believe!

Hi all,
I just finished university and want to reward myself with my first gift spent on me in 5 years. I do not know much about all the parts needed for building a computer .

- Budget: 1200-1500$
- Country: Canada, I can order online or purchase in person in Toronto, ON
- Resolution: 1920 x 1080 xs 2 monitors led 2ms response time
- Purpose: Gaming with Sc2 (and possible future games) and watching streams, I want to be able to play past 12 min games without my comp lagging like mad... I would love to be able to spilt my units in battles not A move and hope for the best as everything freezes.
- upgrade cycle: I am willing to update whenever needed... but i would like to have a great setup for the next 2 years without problem.
- buy time: I can buy today or whenever, I would like to have all the parts ordered by aug 31st
- Over clocking: I am not sure the purpose of it. I just don't want my comp to lag while playing sc2 on ultra settings (right now lag on min)
- OS: I have windows 7
- as for overkill? it is OK and appreciated I have 1500$ to spend and would like to 'spare no expense'

Do not have:
Case, motherboard, gpu, cpu, graphics card, ssd, ram, all other anachronisms i do not know what i need.

Have:
2 Monitors, steel series gaming headset, death adder mouse, steel series mechanical keyboard, Goliath mouse pad.

I consider myself a good person...but i am going to try and make him cry
