My RAM cards are not reusable? I have an 8GB which I think is sufficient enough for SC2 / streaming is it not? Would just switching out the processor/ GPU do the trick as long as they work with my MOBO?

The RAM from that computer is DDR2, if you're buying current generation motherboards they only support DDR3 RAM.

Okay, thanks poundcakes. I was just being stubborn, I guess. Sorry! Along with the HD/DVD drive, is the PSU still reusable or no?

Unfortunately no, because it's DDR2. Everything uses DDR3 now.

Theoretically, your PC should be able to stream (checked your PC spec sheets, the CPU is a C2Q Q8200), albeit probably 480p at best and only if you have an exceedingly good upload speed (I would say at least ~1.5Mb/sec). In game performance will probably suck, and the stream will be pretty mediocre at best.

You can't just upgrade the CPU because there are no worthwhile upgrades for socket LGA 775. Unless you somehow miraculously were able to find a Q95xx/Q96xx for like $50. That would perform ~15-25% better than your current CPU, but still ~30% or more worse than a brand new ~$180 CPU (Core i5's).

Video card only affects what video settings you can use in game. Streaming is all about the CPU, as are minimum frame rates in SC2 for whenever there are large numbers of units. That's what makes playing SC2+streaming so difficult.

Why tiger direct? Can you purchase from NCIX?

I can, I just said tiger cause i'd probably go to the one I live near and buy the parts from it. But I can order from them online, anything is fine. I just need a good recommendation build for my budget and everything, and I hope someone can recommend me a build

Yo d00ds,

Friend of mine is trying to replace his laptop that died with a desktop.

What is your budget?

$600.

What is your resolution?

1280x720

What are you using it for?

Mostly a laptop replacement. The laptop was able to run CS:S. It's for my friend and he said he'll do some gaming, but nothing too serious.

What is your upgrade cycle?

1-2 years.

When do you plan on building it?

By the end of the month.

Do you plan on overclocking?
Nope.

Do you need an Operating System?
Don't think so.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

Nah.

Where are you buying your parts from?
Newegg.

thanks d00ds!

So with a help of my friend, I put together this:

+ Show Spoiler +

Basically, I want a build for streaming SC2 in low quality/resolution as long as I get good FPS and smooth gameplay. What do you guys think of this build? Will it do the job? Would you recommend replacing any parts with something else? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

It was a little hard to decide how to budget for your needs. On the one hand, the games you listed (Dota 2, CS:GO)have very low system requirements to run on maximum settings. You could do so pretty easily with a computer a one or even two hundred pounds cheaper than what I'm putting below. On the other hand, you said all recent games with good fps in multiplayer modes. That changes things drastically, as then you have games like BF3 which are not only very hard to run graphically, their larger multiplayer maps really benefit from a good solid, quad-core processor, not allowing skimping on any major components. Anyway, here's what I ended up with. I first put together a basic build, saw it fit your budget, then realized I forgot windows 7, so I downgraded the case & graphics card. The crossed-out items are the better (quieter in terms of case, more powerful in terms of graphics card) I originally had selected. Their replacements are a perfectly good budget case & a still-powerful graphics card.

Core components: 472 pounds
i5-3550, Asus mATX B75 mobo, 8gb 1333mhz ram, 660ti graphics card, 7870 graphics card.

Supporting components: 231 pounds

Windows 7: 78 pounds
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/microsoft-windows-7-home-premium-64-bit-sp1-operating-system-single-oem

Total: 852 pounds 781 pounds.

Now I just looked at scan.co.uk, because it's the retailer whose interface I know the best in your region and they're usually pretty decent on prices. Feel free to look around at other retailers if you want. Also, I don't know what their shipping costs will be, but all prices include tax.

Best ways to increase budget: include the crossed out items instead of their replacements
Best ways to reduce budget:
downgrade the GPU, all the way to a 6870 or gtx 560 is reasonable if you don't mind medium graphics settings for games like BF3.
downgrade the CPU, an i3-21XX will be good for the vast majority of games, only a few exceptions like BF3
eliminate the SSD

Got my XFX 7970GE in today.

Heats up to 80C at idle temperatures (no fan blockage or anything). Instantly spikes to well past 100C if I put it under any kind of load and then shuts off.

Looks like its RMA time.

Probably. Its also probably because of XFX. I'd never buy from them. There are just too many horror stories about their aftermarket coolers and warranty service to be just a few noisy customers.

Yeah Im refunding my old XFX card as well for a similar problem, it gets hot, but THAT card is still quite operational. Unlike this one, which is just sad.

By the way thats 80C idle while I run the fans at 75 percent.

EDIT: My relationship with XFX.

Once bought a 9800GT. After about a year it had artifacting (VRAM was busted). They replaced it. Later on I found bitcoin.

Bought a 7970. Card is operational but it overheats (by itself its very much ok)
Bought a 7970GE. Card is borked. Not sure what happened to be honest. Must be really poor thermal paste application.

What is your budget?

800£

What is your resolution?

1920x1080.

What are you using it for?

Gaming, and maybe some low-mid quality streaming

What is your upgrade cycle?

Maybe 3-4 years?

When do you plan on building it?

In the upcoming one or two weeks.

Do you plan on overclocking?

no

Do you need an Operating System?

no

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

Yes maybe in a year or so.

Where are you buying your parts from?

http://www.pricerunner.com/

I would like an SSD harddrive if that is managable, because I've got an external harddrive which I save all the heavy data on

Thanks beforehand!

EDIT: I will be running windows 7 if that makes any difference.

Build is terrible.

Don't waste your money on an S suffix procoessor. You can just get a regular 3770 and underclock / volt yourself if you want to.

Are you going to be overclocking or not? Z77 is for overclocking and a K suffix processor is needed to overclock. If you aren't overclocking than get a non-K suffix processor with a H77 board.

750w unit is overkill, OCZ ZS isn't that great of a purchase.

Don't k now why you need 16gb of memory. At $100, this is overpriced as well.

Why are you getting a 250gb HDD?? If you want a program drive, get an SSD...

Why are you getting an extra fan?

Shitty case.

Answer the questions in OP and let the magic happen, you could always decide for yourself (with research), which build is better.

Just to be clear, what's a good build or not depends a lot on what you use the computer for, what your priorities and plans are. If we don't know those things, then it's impossible to evaluate whether or not the build is meeting those needs.

That said, many parts of the build don't particularly make sense for any purpose (even less for what the average person that comes here needs or wants, seeing that this is a gaming forum), so even without any side information, it's safe to say that the build has deficiencies.

Yeah I wasn't sure if the build was good or not, but looks like it wasn't. I'll fill this out and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction with a build.

What is your budget?
I plan to spend around 700-900$. I need everything, including a case. The only thing I'll be putting in the system that I already have is my graphics card, which is the EVGA gtx 560 ti 2GB.

What is your resolution?
Right now I'm running 1680x1050, but I plan on using this monitor as my second one, and I'm going to purchase a monitor with 1920x1080 resolution. You can recommend me one, but its not a part of the budget.

What are you using it for?
I'll be using it for gaming only. I plan to play games such as guild wars, bf3 when the premium edition comes out, and pretty much want to be able to play pc games smoothly as they are released.

What is your upgrade cycle?
I'd like it to last 2-3 years or so.

When do you plan on building it?
I plan on building it as soon as possible. If all goes well and I find a good build, I'd be buying the parts asap.

Do you plan on overclocking?
I don't plan on overclocking it.

Do you need an Operating System?
No, I have windows 7 ultimate.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I do plan on adding a second graphics card, but not now.

Where are you buying your parts from?
I am plan to buy my parts from tigerdirect, because its close to where I live, but I'm flexible and I can also buy them online from any other canadian computer part distributor. I'm looking for the best deal for my buck.

Would appreciate a recommendation.
