Ok so upgrade just the GPU and then have a go with it and if not satisfied just get the new CPU, sounds pretty simple. :D Your also right about sup bar..on almost everything on the rig since I bought it from ibuypower instead of having the guts to do it myself. Would you recommend installing CPU and GPU myself over doing it at a shop? Would I need a ton of tools or anything since its liquid cooled I just didn't want to risk some mishap that would ruin everything. (btw thanks in advance for all this information, you have no idea how much it helps)

This depends whether everything is liquid cooled or it's just the CPU itself with an enclosed liquid heatsink. If everything is liquid cooled than I'd suggest taking it to a shop since you've never worked inside a computer before. If it's just the CPU that's being liquid cooled than switching out the graphics card is really simple. Only a philip head screwdriver is required and maybe a can of compressed air to clear the dust.

Thanks!

It's just the CPU and its like a tube thing connected to a fan at the back that connects to this housing over the CPU. Thanks again man I had a list that was around 1200$ since I thought I'd need a motherboard, cpu, gpu, new liquid cooling kit to fit and then a better power supply. I knew my list was shit and I needed less, glad I came here, love how you guys in this thread are always so reliable with information.

It looks good. If you want to deal with mail in rebates than the 650 variant is fine.

On September 22 2011 12:29 RaLakedaimon wrote:+ Show Spoiler +

Even if you wanted an entirely new platform, you can re-use a lot of old components. Your processor is on socket LGA1156 which has identical mounting holes as the newer processors on LGA1155 so you don't need a new liquid cooling kit.

It would be best to just wait until Battlefield 3 actually comes out and go from there because if you just want low settings, I think a Radeon HD5770 is more than enough for comfortable play.

Earthwatts 650 is great at that price. I bought mine at the top price of ~$100.

And it's Crossfire/SLI ready without the need of an adapter for a 2x 6-pin requirement graphics card.

It just doesn't come with a power cord, so keep that in mind if you don't have one. You can get one for like ~$2 though.

Oops... I mixed up my words.

It's Crossfire/SLI ready and doesn't need an adapter for 2x 6-pin requirement graphics card.

It has 2x 6-pin so you can run 1 card requiring 2x 6-pin without adapters or Crossfire/SLI with adapters.

I knew you knew that lol. Just clarifying for everyone else.

Can you stretch your budget a little bit for a better graphics card? Maybe a GTS 450 or HD 5770 for Ultra on SC2 at that monitor's resolution (1600x900).

You can get a Corsair CX430 V2 instead to re-allocate some $$$ if you absolutely can't go higher in cost. The big difference between the Corsair CX430 and CX500 is the CX500 has 2x 6-pin. For cards requiring 2x 6-pin, you'll need an adapter (which usually comes with the card). You don't even need the 6-pin for the HD 6670; the GTS 450/HD5770 require 1x 6-pin, so if you get a CX430 V2 and GTS 450/HD5770, it's a pretty good change.

If you play other games besides SC2, it might worth it to get an HD 5850 or GTX 460 if your budget allows.

There is no Windows 7 @ student pricing for Canada? If so, look into it as that bring your cost significantly.

EDIT: Wtf am I seeing. I thought at first I say you put HD 6670, not HD 6770. In any case, the HD 6770 only uses 1x 6-pin.

I dunno, sometimes they release stealth upgrades or downgrades, so you can never be sure. If there's a change in connectors usually there's a new model and product page though, like with the XFX Core 450W V2. Just making sure nothing was overlooked.

@Peanutbuttah

Some of those prices don't look that good, like the CPU, power supply, and RAM. Canadian retailers like NCIX allow price matching, and they often have better deals than that themselves, so I'd expect you could save there some.

Except the graphics card looks like a great deal, unless you're counting the mail in rebate.

That keyboard is shit, replace it with a standard 8 dollar keyboard, both are just as good. With the saved 75 dollars and the room in your budget you can even go for like, an i5 2300 and 6870. With those you'll be much better off and will max out on your screen. Also, I'd get a 1080p monitor and 30$ seems to be too much for ram, you can probably get something similiar for 20ish. Replace HDD with Samsung Spinpoint F3, should cost about the same but its faster.

Hello good sirs

My friend wants to build a computer, the games he wish to play is: Battlefield 3, Skyrim and Red orchestra 2 on high/max.

His resolution is 1920x1080 and his budget is around 800 euros. He is going to use the computer for gaming and is planning to build it within the next couple of days. OS i not needed and he is not going to SLI/Crossfire.

Edit: And he wishes to overclock.
I was thinking about ordering from this site: "www.hardwareversand.de" Its pretty cheap compared to other sites in Norway.

Thanks

Thank you very much

hi guys,
I need a new graphics card, but a really cheap one.
so I was thinking about this one: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5450 Lite retail

I have absolutely no clue about hardware, so I was wondering if sc2 (at lowest settings) is gonna run smoothly with this card?

I have a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU @ 2.8 Ghz and 4 GB ram if you need this information.

sorry about the link being in german, but I really couldnt find the exact same card at an english site, I hope you get which card is meant.

What is your budget?
900€ for the computer, 200€ the screen

What is your resolution?
1920x1080px

What are you using it for?
Playing SC II and D3. I work as a web designer so running photoshop smooth is important.

What is your upgrade cycle?
I'd say around 4 years, or when the computer can't handle modern software anymore

When do you plan on building it?
This week

Do you plan on overclocking?
Yes, I haven't done it before but I'd like to give it a try.

Do you need an Operating System?
No need for OS.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No, unless I happen to get lucky and win a new card from the upcoming LAN event in my hometown

Where are you buying your parts from?
I'm based in Finland but I'll be ordering from http://www.mindfactory.de since it's quite a bit cheaper than finnish e-shops.

I've been stalking this thread for a long time and here's what I've come up with. It's mostly what you guys have been recommending to other people but since were talking about such large amounts of money here I wanted to be absolute certain before purchasing.

CPU:
Intel Core i5 2500K 4x 3.30GHz So.1155 BOX € 179,45*

HD
1000GB Samsung EcoGreen F3 HD105SI 32MB 3.5" (8.9cm) SATA 3Gb/s € 49,56*

GPU
1024MB EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti FPB Aktiv PCIe 2.0 x16 (Retail) € 198,11*

SSD
128GB Crucial m4 SSD CT128M4SSD2 2.5" (6.4cm) SATA 6Gb/s MLC synchron € 157,35*

RAM
8GB TeamGroup Elite DDR3-1333 DIMM CL9 Dual Kit € 32,90*

PSU
550W XFX PRO550W Core Edition ATX € 58,36*

MOBO
Asus P8P67 P67 Sockel 1155 ATX Rev3 € 104,95*

DVD
Samsung DVDRW SATA 22x SH-222AB bare / black € 15,21*

Case
ATX Antec Gamer Case Three Hundred Midi Tower o.NT Schwarz € 47,90*

Cooling
Xigmatek Gaia AMD und Intel 754, 939, 940, AM2, AM2+, AM3, 775, 1156, 1366 € 26,12*

Screen
http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/product/46573/dbdnt/Asus-24-VE247H-Full-HD-LED-naytto

What do you guys think about this? I use a lot of photoshop. Would a GTX 560 with 2gb of memory benefit me greatly over the 1gb version? Also, The GTX 560 cards vary from 160€ to 260€, how do I know which one I should get? I'd be interested looking into overclocking so I'm guessing I should take a non-OC'd version?

Thank you!

Ok, so i have a little bit of cashola saved up. And i wanted to buy a fancy new computer. I was hoping to be able to browse facebook very well. And perhaps play world or warcraft, brood war, and runescape. Perhaps even, at the same time., but that's not a must.

I would have spent a little bit more but the shipping was $460. All feedback will be helpful.

The monitor actually doesn't need 2x HDMI ports. If the DVI port has HCDP through DVI, the PS3 can connect to the monitor with a DVI <-> HDMI adapter and audio can be connected to the speakers with composite or optical out.

You could try your old monitor and see how it goes.
