@Myrmidon I can afford the 6770, I was just worried about the psu, but it looks like that's not a problem. And yeah, we just had the psu sitting around the house (it's not used... I don't really know where we got it) so I figured I'd use it. Also is there anything else you'd suggest I'd upgrade that's worth the bang I'll get for the extra bucks?

Build as of now:
BIOSTAR H61MLC LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138340

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX Hard Drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136769

Intel Core i5-2400 with 8GB Memory Bundle:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.806124

XFX HD-677X-ZNLC Radeon HD 6770
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150540

Then the PSU already discussed. And I already have a case that should work with an ATX or micro ATX, a monitor, and an optical drive.

Whatever happened to recommending a build like this for Rumble?

+ Show Spoiler +

Save $100 by going with i3-2100 instead. HDD prices are higher but one can be salvaged. And 6870 dropped to a 6770 should be very well within his means.

I glanced at his last build and it had an i5-2400 in it. I am not sure I see the point.

Well, I need:

Exhaust Fan (3-pin)
Front Intake Fan (3-pin)
Heatsink Fan (4-pin)
Side Intake Fan (3-pin)

I guess I can't do anything about the Heatsink fan? It's a Hyper 212. Or can I still get the same level of performance but quieter?

Also, I guess I don't really care about the others. Just something with good performance/silence balance. Preferably more emphasis on silence.

I'm guessing that a lot of audible noise is due to the fact that my Storm Scout has side cover slits and that is unavoidable. I suppose I should just get a new case entirely like the Fractal. Hrmmm.

I'd get the Fractal and maybe salvage a fan (or more) from the Storm Scout, to make two intake + one exhaust. Then change the fan profile for the Hyper 212 fan.

Wow thanks that makes it easy. =D But also, I already have an optical drive, case that will work with an ATX or micro ATX (I believe), and a power supply that will at least work for what I need. And since that drops the bottom $100 or so off the price tag is there something I could upgrade that would be worthwhile for my money? Obviously I don't want to just spend money to spend money, but if there's something that could use the extra $75 left, I'd be happy to upgrade it.

And as for the i5 I just saw that somebody else was getting it as part of their suggested build and it was in the neat little package with the memory, so I figured it would be a good thing to get. If there's no need at all, sure I can drop to an i3, but again, if it will make a noticeable difference I could just get the i5. I dunno.

Any advice appreciated, and thanks for all being so awesome.

For most games it would be better to get the i3 and the better graphics card. (so the question is: what games? what's the computer for again?)

I think it is just the standard. SC2, Skyrim, normal PC user tasks with video-editing/rendering not really being one of them.

Skyrim is probably the most graphics intense thing I would really ever do on the comp. And if I can't get a comp that will run Skyrim for $500 that's fine, I'd just prefer if it could.

As for cpu intensive stuff, I don't really video edit at all, though I actually might be starting some of that soon (but not intense stuff, really just like simple youtube vids with little to no actual editing). Some light photoshopping. Every once in a while my mom might need to do some coding on it or something if she has to work from home. Either way, she can work from home now and an i3 is better than the cpu she uses now.

In that case would the remaining $75 be better spent on improving graphics more or getting the i5 over the i3?

Probably improving the graphics as long as you arent a user that like 50 chrome tabs open while watching a stream or streaming yourself.

Your choice. You need $50+ for free shipping, so if you need a DVD burner, you might as well get it at NCIX as well: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=45244&promoid=1130 and the processor as well.

@AAyer - get the Fractal. It's a quieter case than the 912, both are decent quality, and if you like the looks that really seals the deal. The fractal at $50 is a fantastic price.

Between the Sapphire and XFX 6870, if they are about the same price get the XFX. All 6870s should perform about the same, but the XFX's cooler should be quieter: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/42796-hd-6870-roundup-diamond-powercolor-msi-sapphire-xfx-18.html

Dunno on monitor. But the above seem pretty clear decisions. Edit: 20" is kind of small for gaming (my opinion only). A bigger monitor will probably be funner.

@RumbleBadger: For gaming, most games that can use 4 cores are also pretty graphics heavy - so you generally want to get an i3 with a more powerful video card rather than a i5 with a less powerful video card. I read one review that Skyrim can use 4 cores, but does well on 2. So the i3 should be fine. The same review also said that shadows in particular tax the CPU in that game, so you can always turn down the shadows setting if the CPU seems to be a problem. Whereas a better graphics card should overall better.

So would pushing up to something like this make a noticeable difference? It brings me basically right up to my budget ($15 to spare), but it's still a 6870. I have the money, so should I just go for it? Any other suggestions for around a $220 graphics card would be much appreciated too.

If you want to spend $220, get a GTX 560 Ti. A Radeon HD6870 for $220 is an absurd waste of money since they can be had for sub $160...
