Hey guys, just wanted to pass this information along. I was having FPS problems on SC2. Here's my rig:
Laptop: intel core 2 duo @ 2.2ghz 4gb RAM 7200 RPM SATA HD geforce 9500M GS windows 7
i was getting pretty constant frame rates in the beta (70-90, everything high except for shaders, lighting, and shadows: those were on low). Come release, I couldn't break 30 fps even with everything on low. The single player was unplayable at 10-15 fps. I was getting frustrated, trying every fix posted on the b.net forums.
Out of desperation, I added the SC2 to my steam games list, and launched from steam. Magically, my FPS went up to 90 on the settings I was using in the beta.
So yeah, try launching the game from steam if you are running out of options. Post if it solved your problems. ALL HAIL STEAM. Once again, valve delivers.
Much luck!
EDIT: apparently it was discussed on the b.net forums as well, and not many people are having success with it.

any theories as to why this would work?

Im completely ignorant steam wise, never really played a game online that required it... Do i need to have some other game that steam comes in a package with or can i just download it from somewhere and add sc2? Tnx.
|
No clue, but it feels like the SC2Launcher might have a memory leak (that is what it feels like when I was playing) on certain rigs. Running through steam bypasses the launcher. That might be some wonky explanation.

All steam does with external games is to have a link from the steam menu to starcraft2.exe. So you start exactly the same application without anything changed. But i am happy for you that you magically got an improvement :D

You can download it from www.steampowered.com
I don't think you need an active game to add non-steam games. On the main steam screen, click on the games tab ---> add non-steam games. It should automatically scan your comp and locate SC2. If not, you can manually browse to add the SC2 exe file

can someone else confirm this?

Yeah, i just booted it up again, and it still goes through the launcher. no clue why it works, then.

The only possible way this would work is if the Steam hook for the ingame interface is enabling/disabling some things in DirectX that make the game perform better. What that could be, I don't know, but I'm very skeptical that its helping any.

Doesn't work for me. Tested it

could steam maybe diable AA ??

I don't know how but it works for me. I have a sucky graphics card (Intel G33/31) and it could barely go up to 25 with lowest settings and resolution. Now it goes up to 40 when I do, so now I can put SOME things in medium quality which is good enough for me [:

this is interesting because i always had the impression that steam rather thwarts a system than boosting it.

Bah? From what I understand about how non-Steam game Steam launching works....this makes no sense. I'm going to have to look into this...

I saw a post on the b.net forums as well

yeah, it really doesn't make sense, but it seems to work for a few people.

doubt its that, i forced AA off with nvidia control panel / rivatuner and it didn't make a difference.

is this really true??????? i have a suckier graphics card than you (Intel G45) and it barely reaches 20 with the lowest settings on. if what you say is true then hurray for steam!!!!

yes steam is free.
no you don't need to officially buy a game first
But if you are a pc gamer steam should be a standard as many new games come via steam, steam also has AMAZING deals if you keep your eye out. Like 50 Dollar games on sale for 25 for a weekend.

oh my fucking god I cant believe this worked...
My poor 8200 could barely keep at 20 fps. Now I've been getting 40 fps early game and 30 fps mid game.
Something is wrong...
