Don't know how many of you are Astronomy buffs or whatever, but on June 8th Venus will cross in front of the sun for the first time since 1882. People in the U.S. probably won't be able to see it, which sucks. All you European's on the other hand got it good. Here's a link to CNN if anyone cares to read.

"The next transit of Venus will occur on June 5–6 in 2012, succeeding the previous transit on June 8, 2004. After 2012, the next pair of transits will be in December 2117 and December 2125."
This is the second of two chances in our lifetime to see Venus pass between the Earth and the Sun. However, please remember to take care of your eyes! If any stargazers here want to offer advice, please let us know.
After June 6, this thread may not be bumped until December, 2125, which coincidentally is when D3 will be working right.

Make sure you have adequate eye protection to view it, or use a non-direct method of observing!

Special sun viewing glasses for solar eclipses can be used (not normal sunglasses!), or it's possible to set up some contraption for viewing the sun on a piece of paper or otherwise indirectly. As a last resort, viewing the sun through several layers of old camera film is also possible, but use that as a last resort, because too much can go wrong with that, like your hand slipping or not using enough film. Also, you'll ruin the film, so make sure it's nothing valuable!
I actually saw this in 2004. It was really cool Venus is approximately the size of Earth and the Sun is more than three times as far away from us. Think about how fricking huge the sun really is when you see that tiny speck pass in front of the giant fireball. You'll never get a chance to see that kind of comparison again! |
