| I've gotten everything but the Lost Viking achievements for singleplayer. I am awful and schmups so I'm thinking that this will be impossible for me. Are there any tips on how to beat the arcade game? |

Use side missles until the battlecruisers. After that get plasma x2 for the final boss. Then switch back. The hardest part for me was staying awake... I suicided with about 13 lives after I got 500k.
For upgrade order... 2x weapon, 2x drone, bombs bombs bombs.
Like he said, use bombs rather than getting hit.
As a side note... Galactix > Lost viking (and every other Space Invaders I've ever played) |

first run threw do not use your bombs just get drones x2 and plasma x2 then only grab the bombs. By end of 3rd going to 4th lvl i hade 14 bombs. Then i just use the bombs when ever to make things easyer. Plasma RAPES bosses and the highr lvl mobs that take more shoots to kill.
got to lvl 16 then just shut it off lol |

I found lvl 2 plasma + lvl 2 drone much more useful than side missles.
The most important tip, if you don't know that already, is that the powerups change their type if you don't collect them right away. So you can always get the powerup type you want. |

| Really? I was able to kill almost every enemy by standing still and spamming fire (press it fast, don't just hold it down) with side missiles. |

Drones are the most important thing in the game. Drones are better than an extra life, because they A. negate any death, and B. attack bad guys. You should be getting two drones ASAP.
Also, bombs give you temporary immunity. Use a bomb if you cannot dodge a projectile. This is the only time you should ever bomb. If you can dodge projectiles, it doesn't matter if there are 50 bad guys on the screen. Save your bombs as a defensive cooldown.
Like everyone else said, side missiles are good for the trash, plasma guns are good for the bosses. |

| This was actually the last single player achievement I got when I finished them up. It's not too bad once you get a hang of all the mechanics (ie. that drones are OP; the fact that weapon pickups cycle over time if you don't grab them right away; that bombs are you "oh shi-!" button; and so on). The only really annoying thing about it is how friggin' long it takes to get. I probably spent more time in the arcade machine then I did on any other single brutal mission or hard mode achievement. I have a few bits of advice:
Alternate between using the left hand on WASD and right hand on Spacebar, and right hand on arrow keys and left hand hitting Spacebar, to avoid fatigue. The mashing required to beat this can be brutal. Breathe deeply and regularly, it's a lot more taxing on your muscles than you might think. I for one have a G-15 keyboard which has a fairly heavy space bar, my hands were screaming by the time I earned Gold. Note that holding down space bar fires about 1\3 as many shots as rapidly mashing it, and that holding it down will not cause Drones to fire their homing missiles, which are absolutely pivotal to winning this.
All power-ups gradually cycle between the 4 available ones if left alone. Learn to recognize the Side Missiles (3 red missiles), Drone (Point Defense Drone), Plasma Missile (Purple launcher object), and Bomb (Blue launcher object). The max upgrade level for each of the weapons and the drone is 2, but you can carry a lot of bombs. Once you have your chosen weapon at level 2 and 2 drones, farm as many bombs as you can.
Many people suggest using Plasma Missiles. They do much greater DPS than Side Missiles, but only directly in front of your ship. I recommend Side Missiles. They will cover the edges of the screen and make most of the non-boss portions of the levels very easy, so you can rest a bit and easily collect bombs and replace destroyed drones. Furthermore, Side Missiles allow you to DPS the bosses regardless of where you are on the screen, as you'll need to dodge attacks, not just fire at the boss nonstop. The overall damage per minute you'll do to the bosses with Side Missiles is thus very similar, and Side Missiles allow you to play much safer overall.
Bombs destroy all mobs and projectiles on screen. Use them defensively. The key to winning is to never die, and to keep your Drones from dying when you can. Drones have their own separate collision and will die if hit by a ship or a bullet. The patterns of all attacks are the same on every difficulty level and only the HP of enemies is upgraded. The exception is that on higher difficulties, there are laser obstacles on the Terratron level. These are very easy to avoid and mainly only hurt you if you are doing a poor job cleaning up smaller enemies, due to using the Plasma Missile or losing your Drones.
Move to the side of the screen whenever the Carrier charges up to fire the repeating cannon at you. Move very slowly when evading the attack, only far enough to avoid getting hit. Don't get greedy, if you stay close to the Carrier, you'll get killed by interceptors when he launches them. Keep your eyes on your ship, the interceptors will be firing at you as well, and they can be tricky.
The Leviathan is very easy, just keep an eye on him when he's about to use his quad tentacle attack. His tentacles have larger collision than they appear to, and target unpredictably. Be careful, and note that popping off a bomb will cause them all to retract. If you have nowhere to evade it's an option. His other attack is to power up and charge at the bottom of the screen. Please don't get hit by this, as it's telegraphed by 5 whole seconds. :[
Terratron might seem very intimidating at first, but his attacks are all very slow and avoidable and predictable. Make sure to pay attention to his animations: when he begins charging up his head-mounted laser cannon, make sure you're on the opposite side of the screen, or it will definitely kill you when he sweeps across the sky. Otherwise, stay far away from him on the lower left or right corner, pay attention to the travel path of his laser discus weapon, and keep your eyes on your ship to dodge his other bullet-based attacks. Note that his hand-mounted cannons' shots are not cleared away by bombs.
Keep your eyes on your ship. Killing enemies is not as important as avoiding bullets. Develop a sense for where you need to be moving to within the next 1, 3, and 5 seconds, as sometimes the bullets will create a death zone that you can't escape from without predicting it, especially when blowing up the Scourges on the Leviathan level. |

| ^^ I was using right hand on space and left hand on arrows. Since I'm right handed it's more confmrtable after long periods of time. Gotta put left pinky on right control ready to bomb in case you can't escape a bullet. |

Like others said, get level 2 drones (was my priority), then level 2 plasma, then bombs until you lose a drone and need to replace it. Don't keep the fire button pressed, you will fire much faster if you tap it. The game gets really boring and annoying since it takes so long to beat, but its easy. Took my just the one attempt. With 2 drones destroying most of the stuff, and you dodging (and using a bomb when necessary) you'll be fine.
Even using bombs on the bosses (like 3 each on the 2nd and 3rd bosses) as well as a few on level 2, you can hit 15-20 bombs in reserve in notime, as well as a bunch of extra lives. |

I struggled a bit with bit until I realized that you shoot considerably faster by mashing Spacebar and not just holding it. After that it became very easy and didn't take very long to get the required 500k. And like others said, drones are very important. I liked the spread gun more than the plasma though. |

| I agree, I suck at shooters T_T. I got like 15k points and just gave up. When I'm done with everything else I'll go back but honestly I can't see myself beating it for a long time. |

After play Touhou games this mini-game sucks since you can only move in 4 directions instead of being able to get away with going diagonally as well .
At least this thread taught me that the power-ups changed over time. Never knew that. |

Constantly be replacing your drones as they die, I think they're more important than weapon upgrades even. And the droids kill most everything anyways, so rock the laser if you're comfortable with it as it makes boss fights MUUUCH shorter.
And as other people said, use bombs as you think you're about to get hit. Once you get the hang of it you'll pass with flying colors, and likely kill yourself shortly thereafter. :D
But imo, most important thing, GET DRONES. You can basically take up to 3 hits with 2 drones, so when you see a drone you can't quite get to, throw a bomb out to get to it. |

| as people said drones are super important. it took me 3 playthroughs to finally get the achiev and when i finally got it i had 3 lives left and 0 bombs(i spammed them on the final level i was on knowing id get the achiev). if those of you who havent tried are wondering, i believe at minimum u have to replay it 3 times to get 500k points, i think i had around 150k first play, around 350k after the 2nd playthrough, and i hit 500k midway into the 3rd playthrough of the 3rd level. i prefered plasma because it seemed to work down bosses and the miniboss type guys faster than the split fire attacks. |

The Lost Viking is quite terrible... the hardest part of this game is noticing that mashing the spacebar will fire faster than just holding it. After that it is trivial. ...and I lost my gold medal because bnet was offline when I hit 500k >_>
later I'll try again. Probably gonna use the plasma cannons this time, or maybe try switching the weapon. I've got two questions though..
- do Bombkills count for score? - can the Drone's seeker missiles clear the screen effectively? |
