This may come off as an incredibly retarded post, but while I was laying on the floor of an apartment licking ranch dressing off the floor on the weekend, a thought popped into my head.
I'm not sure about all of you, but i've seen a decent amount of interviews with top level starcraft players where the players look kind of... dirty. Or sickly. Or completely fashion-ignorant. I was wondering to myself, "Is this an obstacle for the growth of e-sports?"
Is it going to be harder for north American and European audiences to buy in to the whole starcraft craze when the stars of the show look... well... bad?
I mean, I'm all for inner beauty, individuality, and not valuing petty things in society like fashion or good looks, but frankly, the majority of people out there don't seem to be on the same page. If eSports ever want to become a fully accepted 'sport' in western culture, it's going to need to cater to the petty values of the average individual.
So I'm wondering TL, do you think that the top level pro gamers who become the recognizable part of the scene should be obligated to make a little bit of an effort to look good? Of course, there are plenty of well dressed, healthy looking, badasses that have been making strides for this community, but there are also many who don't seem to take care of themselves very well.
I realize this topic is a little... out there... but I think the core issue is a valid one. I hope I am not crucified for posting this.
Edit: This is probably not the appropriate forum for this thread. I felt it dealt specifically with the starcraft two scene so I unwittingly posted it here.

lol
i dont think this matters a too whole lot.. however, i DO think that a player should look @ least decent @ any kind of public event/tournament. this goes for anything not just SC.

Yes, DEFINITELY. Reach wearing makeup LOL

It def. would not hurt the esports scene if there was a progamer who was really good looking, as it may draw some more interest to the scene.

here's how i think looks can improve the competitive gaming scene.
you look good, and if there are enough publicity, SOME girls will notice you, and hey, maybe even become a fan. (that is if you are pretty good looking) then, other gamers see fangirls, they decide to get better, and dress better repeat the process, and we can turn NA/EU into korea.
unlikely scenario, seeing as how you won't find many girls in these regions who are big into gaming.

"Practicing" for 12 hours a day leaves no time for fashion.
|
Definitely, nerds can look sexy.
|
I think its somewhat important, its good that a lot of the gamers I talk to go to the gym and try to keep in shape, but I'll admit next to none of us have any style haha
|
Should atleast not look like you just got up from bed when you are at the public events..like some do

I know from the documentary series on progamers (OGN's Real Story Programer) that they are pressured to look good. For example, DarkElf was told either he loses weight or sent home.
Yes. I do think it would improve the image of eSport so we won't be embarrassed to cheer for them.

As long as you're as beautiful as JulyZerg you get a pass.

Wait no one bothered to even question this?

Yes, they should.. Think of it, you can either be cheering for Michael Moore playing Starcraft, or you can cheer for Tasteless, who are you going to pick? It's not so much looking attractive, it's not being a massive slob like what the public generalizes gamers to be (Southpark WoW episode anyone?).
|
Pro gamers should be able to show up any way they damn want.
They arnt there to look pretty in interviews they are there to sit infront of a pc all day and own people at a video game.
obviously its different in korea because its a sport and are national stars.

bisu is so dreamy omg
In all serious though, if you are to appear at an event, don't look like a slob? If you aren't naturally goodlooking, don't look like you don't try to look professional.
|
I will become the NA version of Bisu, except I'll be playing SC1/SC2 like a scrub and just look good at tournaments. Now where are the fangirls at?
Anyways it is their choice if they want to look good or not, I think the positives outweigh the negatives if one where to care about their image though - so yes, they should, cause they get more fangirls and that is always a positive.
