So the day will come to all of us when we have to tell someone in real life that we play starcraft. Yesterday I told my Dad about the upcoming global GSL with a prize pool of 500k, 500,000 dollars!! There was no reaction. ''Why do you still play games?'' (I'm 21).
I reminded him that it was he who introduced me to videogames in the first place (the glorious sega mega drive) but I couldn't put into words why starcraft is such a big part of my daily routine (dare I say life?). So of course the answer was to send him straight here, to TL. Reading through On Waxen Wings he soon realised that the time I spend at my computer is not shooting at people with pre-pubescents but in fact working on my build, honing my skills and most importantly, playing an Intelligent game.
Perhaps if e-sports is to become big in the west the gaming industry needs to shrug off its 'childish' tag that the mainstream media still gives it, and sc2 is the best way.
Anyone got any funny stories about trying to tell their GF's about starcraft I'd love to hear
my girlfriend bought me starcraft, so i wouldnt bug her while she studies. we watched TSL2 together; if not for artosis giving a shoutout to all the girls watching, that would not have happened though (it was valentine's day). If i'm watching and shes bored, then i'll commentate to her.
shes genuinely happy when i advance in the ladders. I dont really get into the nitty details of why corsair reaver is good, i just tell her that its really fun to play and makes me feel like a boss.
1) Start talking about progaming and the new tournament coming up
2) My mom/dad looks at me funny (she's Korean)
3) Tell her about different tourneys and say some people actually make a lot of money.
Apparently she just cameo off the phone with her sister in Korea and the shit everyone was talking about over in Korea was about the government wanting to regulate PC Cafes more as someone had just died from playing for too long, and it wasn't the first time.
What is there to explain? People either get it or they don't, I don't think you're going to change anyone's mind who already has it made up.
You can almost always tell as soon as you mention the phrase "video game" too just by their reaction how they view it.
My gf for instance when I met her she played Oblivion a bit before so she was open to video games but didn't know anything about them other than that one. A free WoW trial fixed that quick and 2 years later she still plays it. She doesn't 'get' RTS games or competitive games in general but far from your average person who doesn't realize there are genres or care to learn about them they just have views on 'video games' in general.
The only close-to-interesting one I have to talk about is my younger sister (who's 8). She doesn't like watching the game, but she loves watching the Day[9] dailys, because she thinks he's hilarious and awesome (which he is).
I was explaining it to a female friend of mine and when I tried to get the point of micro/macro across, she sort of looked at me and said "So it's like a mix of Rollercoaster Tycoon and that Colonization game we had to play in Social Studies."
Yeah...I told my gf about starcraft2 and how fun it was, she even watched me from time to time and then it was her turn. I put her versus an easy computer on lost temple as zerg. I told her the mechanics of zerg and she has watched me oh so many times play them. I went to take a shower hoping she would love it enough I could buy her a new laptop so we could play together. I get out of the shower...I walk back in there to see what she was up to and appearantly I did not clarify enough... She had soooo many drones and overlords...because she couldnt build anything else. I asked her if she made a spawning pool and she replied, I cant they keep attacking me and killing my drones... O.o
